yo guys can't wait to join you when i order my refresh m17x (and i just overclocked my gpu on the m15x) but i have a question is it worth it two get two graphics cards or is one gonna be more than enough in comparison to what i have now, also this is my first time returning a laptop and what not, (got my m15x on the 6th) i'm a little nervous trying to come up with a reason to not get charged 15% restocking any suggestions?
-
I hope Australia will soon follow (A few Aussie dell reps have said the Refresh will be here on the 25th to later Feb'.) So im hoping i will get it. Probably cost a arm and a leg. (I expect the prices in Australia to be in the 3000+)
-
Whats so good about these RGB LED displays? Should I only get one if I intend to watch HD movies on my laptop? I dont so I was thinking I should stay with the Beyond HD (1200p) - Dual CCFL. I intend to use this laptop for work and playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 - prob nothing else.
However if this LED display quality is really REALLY noticeable compared to the 1200p I would pay out the extra £190. Is it? -
Hi new to forum.
I've been waiting for the M17x refresh for months. I have a Alienware desktop that is done me well, but have been looking to the m17x for the next move.
Ok - so can anyone please justify the massive price difference between purchacing on UK and US sites. Can be difference of 700GBP or more for what should be same parts. Is there anything to stop me from purchasing on US one as UK resident (or through my US sister if needs be).
Refresh to i7 is just what i've been waiting for. Soon as I get paid for this script that puppy is coming home. Just need help from you fine people on where to get it.
Thanks in advance. -

Thanks for that Mooney.
From my experience I am all too aware that there are a long list of import duties going into the UK plus insurance that prevent such long distance shipping. Its nonsense of course. I recall getting a camcorder and got import on that since it was considered a VCR which meant 200GBP duty on it.
Anyway if I got sister to buy the m17x and picked it up from her it is doable. Would still be cheaper getting flight to NY to get it than paying the UK Dell prices. The spec I want runs at around 2000GBP from US site and is around 2850 from UK. I just cannot justify that much difference, how the hell can Dell?? -
The alienware m17x currently costs 2800€ here in belgium. With the 1.73ghz core i7, 4 gigs of ram, 500gigs of hard drive (in 0 raid configuartion), and the full hd screen (not led). And 3 years of enxt bussines day service + accidental damage.
The 1.6 ghz core i7 isn't available, but instead one can chose for the 2.66 chz core i7 with 2 cores. Am not sure what to pick...do the enwest games use 4 cores already or is this still an exception?
This price makes me consider alienware again, since kobalt offers about the same product for 500 euros less, but in a hidious package (don't like the looks at all). To bad Alienware does not offer Azety keyboards, but I use an external one anyway.
I got 2400€ atm, a few more months of saving my allowence and this gorgeous lappy will be mine ^^ -
-
Javi have you bought from these guys before? If you can you stick a bit of text in regarding your experience? I would seriously consider specing one up here but I would be concerned with the warranty, shipping costs and *more importantly* then length of time it would take them to ship. -
I sent email to hidevolution for a quote (thx for tip mooney).
I just hope by Feb, when I am likely to purchase, the UK site will have all options, such as crossfire and more HDD configs. US Dell puts UK to shame.
As I write this I got quote from hidevolution.
Here is spec I went for and the price www.hidevolution.com quoted me:

Great tip thx so much Mooney and javilionaire. Even with shipping its only another 2 days to ship at $225 internationally. Savings all round.
Oh how UK has let me down. -
weddingvideos4u Notebook Consultant
you will still be charged VAT and import duty before shipping company will deliver it,
have you looked into the other charges? -
Yeh I had considered the VAT too. But even so it is likely to be cheaper than UK Dell. As to how much when all is said and done, well I need to figure that out.
-

And the fact that the keyboard will be a different layout
and the power supply being a usa one?
not trying to put you off, just factors to concider -
Guys, you are right about the shameful UK site. They don't even have a proper pic of the 9-cell battery...who works at Dell UK? are they all just kicking back and having a laugh?
No i7, but also no proper pics of 9 cell battery, no 2nd HDD no SDD for M15x...only 1 single GPU option...all this RAID 1 nonsense and the SSDs have disappeared. No SSD is a deal breaker for me...I ain't buying another laptop UNLESS it's got SSD, man that's the future...they seem to have RGB LED in place though...
We'll have to wait and see for what happens when the refresh finally hits the shores. -
According to www.dutycalculator.com I can expect to pay £379 GBP for VAT on a m17x costing me $3242 purchased from US.
This takes purchase price to £2371 for using www.hidevolution.com services -
Good luck with shipping from the states m8, if I had a sister living there though, I'd arrange a couple weeks holiday there, order it and bring it back as hand luggage. Also Weddingvideos4u has a point...
-
Whoa! Correction....i7 just hit UK site moments ago.....exciting!!!
-
You are both right of course. There are no end of issues for purchasing from US, least of all those if the damn thing packs in on me and I need to repair or replace.
My frustration is that I feel I am given no option when UK strips me of choices that should be uniform across Dell internationally and it sucks my wallet empty like an over zealous vaccum cleaner. -
Yeah, there is NO EXCUSE for charging £900 for 8GB 1333 RAM as apposed to $350+ for the same in the US...DOLLARS!!!! That is just taking the...
-
Has anyone got any updates on the blueray option. When is it coming back?
-
I heard someone say on here that Steve Jobs refuses to put them in Apple products cos 'Blu-Ray is a world of hurt...' I wonder if Dell has decided the same thing...after a few cursory glances around the forum it seems that people were having major problems with Blu-Ray
-
M17xR2 Manual: Click here to download it.
-The bios section of the manual states that the system will allow CPU frequency and vcore overclocking. This could just be a left over from the original M17x that they didn't change. Guess we'll find out once people start receiving them. -
Is the Intel Ultimate N 6300 likely to be in the UK build? At present there is only the standard option. Not exactly future-proof.

(They offer the m17x with the blu-ray drive btw)
Also, they declare the products value to whatever you ask it to be. $400 is a good option because the vat cost for you will be around 40 quid instead of 600 quid... just talk to ted on live chat later, he's really helpful and live chat comes online around 7.30pm
-
I've got goose bumps. THIS IS sooooooooo much better....
-
Haha I was similarly excited when I first read it. I'm betting it's limited to 920xm processors. Really wish I had the extra grand laying around for one lol. -
NEED to get the XM proc now....definitely!
CPU and Memory Voltage....wow -
I'm guessing G73 is no longer in the running? -
I don't really understand the changing vcore voltage options etc though.
Which settings should I adjust all the options to? -
-
Prepare for a new wave of M17x in the NBR Marketplace, lol. -
-
-
-
Which values should I NOT adjust any of the settings to, if I don't want to blow up my brand new m17x -
-
BTW, nothing about integrated graphics.
Also look like there is a second AC adapter option that is only 150W. -
Yup I didn't expect it to have it since M15x doesn't either.
-
Man, Dell knows how to put together a machine that will drain my wallet fast.
-
-
Not for me. It will be for some. You do have other ways to save power if need be so I don't care.
-
What's the point of Stealth Mode if it doesn't do anything on Battery power? Isn't the point of it to reduce energy consumption?
-
That's it, i'm getting a new M17x!
-
Yes, it manipulates your power settings which you can do manually also.
-
I guess the only option ill be using will be the turbo mode lol. Ill probably end up melting my m17x-R2 if I use the other options :'(
-
It's like Dell read everyone's minds and created the perfect system (on paper so far). Once the 5870 xfire + mobile fermis (whenever they come) are configurable, this system will be unstoppable. I just hope that Dell did not cripple the M17x with throttling like they did M15x.
-
You can always trade your 920xm for my 820qm...you know...to keep your M17x-R2 safe.
