I wish there was a reason to believe we'll even see the 5870's as an option anytime soon.

I have a quick question, when I ordered the m17x I tried to do a config with the 620 and dual gpu but was told there is a compatibility error or at least I am pretty sure it did, today I tried to do the same config and it worked. Is my memory correct?

Edit: It was the m15x, 620 is not compatible with gtx 260m.

The screen looks much better in person but I will give it about a week or 2 to fix the problem and if they can't I will send it back seeing I payed cash for it and will see what they will do. I have until the 2 of march that is exactly 21 days.

Jeezuz, that's horrible. I can't believe these machines do this crap so commonly. I'd totally understand a handful of bad apples, so to speak, because every manufacturing process churns out a few, but for so many to be so screwed up. . . this almost seems like an inherent design flaw. Guess we'll know more tomorrow.

I thought that in early reports flickering disappeared when Xfire was disabled, one of the factors leading to speculation about power issues. But if disabling Xfire has no effect on flickering, then power would seem to be largely eliminated as the cause. Is this not true?

Ok so here is an update I am able to play L4D2 with no flickering when crossfire is disabled. what the problem was before I am not to sure. I have tried to recreate it and don't seam to be able to. I am referring to the flickering when just on the web. This is making me scratch my head. but at least I can play with 1 video card working at least.

Due to the problems occuring with flickering and what not I wanted to chime in and let yall know that so far I haven't had any such problems while gaming. I haven't had time to run any tests yet but I plan on doing some tomorrow will keep yall updated. Specs in signature.

Which is all the more reason to believe this is a power issue. Either with the motherboard (meaning we're all screwed), PSU (easy fix) or a combination (screwed).

Mine comes with a 720 but with a 920 in the mail im hoping i get a chance to test it proper but i wont even bother till theres some good news... If i saw that flicker i would flip my lid so better i dont even see it ...

Then i also need to decide which i want to keep the G73 or the M17x ... It will be an interesting weekend....

Yes you definitely do not want to see that flickering, it's a major buzz kill. How's that G73 working out for you? I was >.< this close to pulling the trigger on the G73 X1 today but then I realized how much I hate Asus and didn't. :p Actually that G73 looks pretty awesome, the 5870 numbers with OC's are close to 4870 xfire.

The G73 is an amazing machine and i know how you feel about Asus :)....

Its no M17x when it comes to build quality but overall its just great machine that works like it should... It Never gets hot anywhere after hours of gaming and the fans are so quiet its a joy to use....

The screen is very nice IMHO though i know its not a RGB LED but still very bright with decent to good color and great vertical viewing angles(major plus there) ...

Overall its so easy to recommend the machine for all it does and has and even more so for the $$$...

Mandrake will have his tomorrow and Sleey0 by friday so it will be interesting what they have to say as well ...

I know i wont hesitate to send back the M17x though since i enjoy the G73 that much but at the same time i got such a good deal on the Alienware that its going to be a very hard decision.....

Im dying to try the 920 in the G73 but i wont bother till i decide which im keeping...

Yeah swapping the 920 in that G73 seems like a major PITA. I guess that's the trade off for their new cooling style. If you have time, you should do a video review in HD, I'm curious about the display panel. Too bad Asus uses a proprietary 5870.

Yeah its going to be a PITA alright though i always like a challenge .... It will suck though if i dont want to keep it in there or it runs to hot lol so yanking it right back out might not be fun but oh well... Drake ordered a 920 for his so i know he will try it right away and might save me the hassle :)...

I wish the 5870s were available already for the Alienware as i dont want to hassle with selling the M17x a couple months after i get it just to reorder again and i know ill want to so thats another part of me that does not want to keep the M17x but at the same time the 4870s are very powerful as is so its hard to say .....

You could always sell the 4870s on eBay and grab the 5870s off RJ tech or Dell. Good luck w/that 920xm, I'm curious to see how it turns out and if there's any throttling.

Well the 5870s require less power to run them. So i assume they would drain a little less then the 4870s. Still hoping it will be a BIO's update.

Yeah i know i can sell them but its such a huge hassle as id rather just buy new because in the end unless you get a good chunk of change for your cards its not worth the headache not to mention the lack of warranty is why i wont bother....

If you buy the cards new from Dell lets say you only get a 90 day warranty so i wont even bother... Cards croak left and right and i would be slightly upset if my $600 video card died, forget about if both of them took a dump lol...

I also been doing a lot of thinking about my keeping my R2, here is what my conclusion is...
The ASUS G73 is without a doubt a great value, and i love a good deal like that, it is considerably less money than my R2, has two 500GB HDD, has the DirectX11 5870, BluRay player, 8GB RAM or double what mine has, plus it seems to run quiet during high GPU activity, this are all pluses...
In the other hand, now that I saw the RGB monitor in my R2, knowing myself, I just couldn't b happy with anything else, as simple as that... also in my R2 I know I should be able to upgrade to 5870's in Crossfire when available, same as adding a slot load BluRay drive to it, as far as memory, that's the easiest to upgrade too, this leaves the money involved in all this... While I love a great value such as the G73, this time, I choose to pay the extra cash for the gorgeous RGB monitor and eventually to add the upcoming vid cards and BluRay...
Once I settled this in my mind, I felt a lot better with my purchase, knowing I did a decision that I simply wont regret.

If the ASUS G73 had the Crossfire option and the RGB monitor, then it would be tough to decide, but as it is, to me, there is simply no contest..

PS on another quick note, the build of the Alienware M17XR2 is top end

Perhaps the release of these cards then would be a cure for the screen flicker.

Thats if you get them in Crossfire ;) Otherwise the just croak left :p Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week, be sure to tip your waitress

Has Dell made any indication when Radeon ATI 5870 crossfire will be available on M17X-R2?

My ASUS G73JH-A1 preorder is getting delayed and delayed, so if 5879 SLI is available on AW, it can become an option

Join the club. Everything in Australia is getting delayed left right and center. The 5870 will 'hopefully' be out within the next month or so. But no date yet.

So why does AW not use DVI? I know we have HDMI but seeing as most 4:3 displays are going dinosaur I figured the market would have ditched the old display port.

So, for those that didn't get the 2nd HDD Assy case in the R2 did you call Dell and get one sent without trouble? It does say something about a 2nd HDD Assy on my System Configuration but it didn't come with one. The R1 I returned had one in it so I expected one in the R2.

Easy phone call to AW tech support, they overnited it to me. Make sure you specify that you need cage+interposer+screws or they may just ship the cage. I had to call back yesterday to get the the whole kit shipped. May end up with an extra cage tho...

    Another question (or two):
I'm kind of new to dual graphic cards in a system and also quad cores.

    1. I ran into a slight problem running WoW. With Crossfire enabled and AI on as soon as I start the game and even before I login it just constantly scrolls. The type of scrolling where you see lines moving down the screen. I finally figured out if I put it in Windowed mode it stopped and worked fine after that. Anyone else have this problem with WoW or any other game?

    2. For the quad core I noticed when I look at my Resource Monitor (and Device manager) that 8 cores are listed. Four of them show active while the other 4 are parked. Why are 8 cores showing?

Like I said, still learning about dual graphics and quad core configurations. :)
