Its not normal but so far, everyone have it

Are you talking R1 or R2? There is no stealth mode in the R2...that I know of...anyhow you should be able to boot off either the battery or the powerblock. Define "I can't do anything" because it is unclear what your asking. Does you laptop freeze? Does it shut off?, mouse works but laptop is unresponsive? Please elaborate. I'm sure somone can help more then I since I havn't gotten on yet, but more detail is need for a proper resolution.
-
well it's not normal
but since dell doesn't fix this it bacames normal
-
For those that play WoW and have quad cores:
I did find this on the WoW forums.
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=22749239315&sid=1
I knew about the config file setting and core parking fix. But, the Blue post mentions about laptops working better in Windowed mode for some reason. Which is weird since Windowed mode is supposedly a performance loss. But, if it works I won't complain. I have only used Dells drivers so far. I haven't tried the 9.12 modded driver yet so will see if that works better playing the game Fullscreen vs. Windowed.
Posting this in case it will help someone else. -
you know what, i can believe that. With m m1730, while playing darkfall, i was gerting a slightly better fps windowed than fullscreen for some reason.
-
The Blue post mentioned something about laptops wanting to run in native resolution or something. Might be true.
-
Sorry I didn t see there was already a thread for that, yes it's seem everyone have the problem for the R2, the computer freeze when we unplug the laptop
-
Hopefully I get a working laptop back today! Just waiting to be contacted at this point.
-
I think the whole NBR Alienware community is waiting.
-
Yeah..no pressure on Dell/AW or anything.
Realistically I wouldn't count on a fix this quick. Going through QA for updates takes a while and the Chinese New Year doesn't help matters. Just look at the Dell Studio XPS 1645 thread as an example.
-
No pressure, no pressure at all... Depending on their answer, they will get ; a: happy customers, b: a truckload of returns !!! Lol
-
Joker's announcement is more anticipated then the naming of the next Pope! Too bad it'll probably come when I'm sleeping. At least I'll have something to look forwad to when I get to work!
-
lol well I'm sure nagshead will post something before I do.
-
I dunno, nagshead was being rather coy yesterday, maybe the answer will be positive? I don't see any reason for nags to comment positively on sleey0 buying a new m17x for someone if AW has a fix on Wednesday, unless there was good news.
-
I am just hoping the fix is something we can do at home, driver/bios something similar.....dont want to have to ship back for a part replacement or something.
On aneother note, I should have my system today, its a 820...any tests I can run to see if I have the issue ? -
The usual- run some games on it and see if it flickers. Then if you want to test max stability, run furmark + p95. -
To be honest I would rather just have it done right. It might be an inconvenience to ship back, but it's better than a BIOS update that would just permanently throttle the system.

UPDATE: Called Alienware Tech Support and man was that easy enough. Told the guy it didn't come with the 2nd HDD case and he agreed right away that it should have. He is shipping me all the parts you mentioned and it should be here by the weekend.
Thanks....+rep. -
Just send it to me
IMO you guys are looking at a bios fix -
If it's bios related we won't see it today. Probably would be a couple months.
-
Actually bios is due to be posted this week already
i've been waiting fir one myself -
Then it must have been in development before they took joker's system.
-
Oh good! That will give folks something to do by testing and posting on the forums all over again!
-
Yea...I know youre right......but that so sucks.
-
Point is that it's not hard to adjust power tables
-
The part that takes time is testing it and seeing if it breaks anything else.....who am I kidding they don't test.
-
Which would be done at Flex most likely and they are shut down for the next week or two.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
No profit in testing. That's the customers' job.
-
Joker, when I ran furmark (multigpu) & p95 last night, I was only seeing 25% GPU utilization on GPU2 (according to hwinfo). Is that normal? I would think on a video stress test that it would try to max both.
-
good point.
-
Feb 12th - 17th I know my Asian Contacts are shut down lol
-
All we get is Presidents day on Monday in the US.
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
if you don't have the flickering on games don't try to find it enjoy your laptop like that if you saw some kind of flickering trottle then run tests
-
Dell can do stuff to
also the bios slated for this week could of already fixed it
-
Lol! that's exactly what i was thinking while reading here
I was wondering if it is more financially viable for Dell to have the early adopter group do the testing on their new units than to establish a real testing facility and personal...
I can complain with my R2, I have no problems of any kind so far, no dead pixels, no flickering, no odd power cord/power supply issues, OSD misbehavior or any other of the problems I read in this thread, for now but knock on wood, don't want to jinx myself
Only interesting thing i noticed was that while playing Bioshock 2, I felt one side of the keyboard warmer than the other, considerably, so I ran GPUz and FurMark and had interesting results:
With Crossfire enabled and running multiGPU FurMark, one of the cards topped of at 68C with 100% load, while the other one topped off at 32C with a 0 to 5% load, I ran the test for about 15 minutes with all options checked, is this normal?
Seems like the primary card is handling almost all of the load... -
Hey if Dell wants to send free laptops for 'Beta" testing I would be happy to do that lol
-
I'm getting the same thing-one GPU @ 100%, the other no more than 25%.
You running stock drivers? -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
because your machine is not running in crossfire -
Do you have a crossfire option in ccc?
-
Yes, and it is enabled
Yes, stock drivers -
That would be bad because then they knew of the problem when they started shipping them .
-
Thought the BIOS fix for this week was for th R1's ?
-
well it seems that this game doesn't support multi-gpu solutions - i failed to get working it with sli - no any perfomance mode working (split-screen or other sli modes don't work). maybe with crossfire it will be much better.
btw my gpu temp reaches maximum at 53 while playing bioshock 2 - just for comparison -
Here is a shot of CCC stock drivers CrossFireX screen and GPUz
I will try lattest drivers when I get around to read on modding them for mobility...
An observation also is that if I disable Crossfire FurMark would give me around 4 FPS and after enabling it goes up to 11 to 14 FPS, but the load is all absorbed by one card, I will definitively like to know more on this... -
Yes, but after playing BioShock 2 I ran FurMark multigpu and GPUz to check temps and had same lopsided results, so unless somebody who knows the dynamics of Crossfire in depth sheds some light on this, I will assume Crossfire is not working as it should...
-
exactly - what i really know for that moment is that the game does not support sli (like dirt 2) but maybe Crossfire does. so find a way to enable it and we'll check it out
edit: lol it seems at 190.62 it supports but i dunno.. -
I was having the same problem as Brandon when playing Crysis. Last night I patched to v 1.2 and all the flickering is gone. =p
-
Your furmark have a dragon on it ?
-
Guys I know you are a very knowledgeable bunch so I have a lcd panel problem that I need some help with. My dell e1405 lcd inverter crapped out so I replaced it with a part bought on ebay, and everything seemed to be fixed. Yesterday it started flickering and the backlight shut off once, but comp restart solved the problem. Today it was buzzing in time with flickering so the more buzz the more flickering. Then I smelled it, kind of a foul gas like odor coming from the location of the buzzing. It has stopped buzzing and flickering now, but the smell remains and it still comes from the same location on the bottom right of the screen. Btw the screen is working alright now but perhaps a little dimmer than usual, what the heck is going on?
Btw I am out of warranty
