im waiting to see what system im going to get.

\tech support have passed my details over to swap department for a new order to be produced.

all i know for sure it will be 4870 crossfire and i too would like to know the difference to what i have 260sli and the 4870 crossfire

anybody know a good review of m17x with dual 4870 crossfire?

hey guys should i go with the 920xm or the dual gpu's, i can only get one or the other.
also what warranty do i need for them to upgrade my card and whatnot.

 

I thank you Mandrake, for all this information. You have definitely sealed the deal for me. I think I'll go ahead with my plans to get the M17x w/ Dual 4870 now and then upgrade later to Dual 5870 when the option becomes available. Works for me!!

Also would like to know this ... do I need a specific warranty in order to score a GPU upgrade later?

honestly it's up to you. A single 4870 will run games with no issues so will the lower end procs. If you want to benchmark then do whatever you can to get both.

Warranty doesn't affect upgradability like the old Alienware systems. Dell will sell you anything.

People have had that extended because of issues that occur right when they get the system. Also recently people have said it was extended because of the holiday. Every system I've returned happened day 1.

There seem to be plenty of legitimate issues that happen with high end electronics. You don't need to be dishonest. It'll just come back around on you in the end anyway.

add: Plus over the years Dell has been pretty fair with me. They bought back my M1730 for what i paid for it after about 2 years.

 

Everyone is ordering the "Intel® Core™ i5 520M 2.4GHz (2.93GHz Turbo Mode, 3MB Cache)", there's already a delay for those.

 

Having my system replaced by Dell because of faulty parts. Having a new configuration emailed to me soon, then if approved by me it will be manufactured. Do you guys think they will make me a R2 version of the M17x or will they send me the exact same config again?

Hey witcher nice find with that extremeprocessor guy. Is there any reason not to grab the ES sample of the 920xm vs OEM? Figure I'll sell my 820qm for about 400 and grab that 920 with bing.

 

Im in the exact same position, i dont know what the config would be they say the same except that they will give me 4870 cross fire insted of the 260 sli i have now. as i had concerns about residual latency issues with the nvidia cards.

I have to leave it in the lap of the God's and see what happens and hope fates kind!

I ordered through the Small Business Dept. and got a 10% discount on my purchase! The only thing I'm not happy about is no Blue Ray option. It disapperared from the dell canada site a couple of weeks ago. I asked the dell dude if i could order one but he said he didn't have the SKU to order it. So my question is can i uprade the DVD drive to a Blue Ray drive down the road??

One other thing, i had previously (December) had orderd and received an M17x with the Core 2 Duo 8600, 260m video card but unfortunately/fortunately they sent it with the 1440x900 screen ot the 1920x1200 i had ordered so i sent it back.

I did however fire it up, installed the latest nvidia drivers and installed the only game i had on hand which was COD4 Modern Warfare. I can't tell you how disappointed i was with the performance. Stuttering, didn't detect/set to high settings. Ran like crap.

I know the new one i ordered yesterday is much more powerful so I sure hope i see a HUGE performance increase?

ordered the m17x-r2 through www.hidevolution.com - they offer the blu-ray burner and order it straight from dell.

Dell sales rep told me they have a compatibility issue with their BR and windows 7. That's why it's not offered. Weird.

 

that is not true there is not compatibility issues when i have my uj-235a panasonic i was using windows 7 too

 

anyone think getting the 920xm and the crossfireX 4870's would increase chance of throttling due to power consumption. i have the 920xm in my m15x and i'm worried the 820 won't be fast enough for me, i also have 8gb 1333 of ram and am going down to 4gb 1333, maybe i should go with 820 and 8gigs 1333 what do you guys think.

 

I have a uj-235a and have no problems at all! Just FYI I can burn blu rays and play them without an issue!

 

I can tell you right now you only need 4GB of ram if you're questioning it.

well i have 8gb now and i don't really know what the diff would be during gaming and stuff though i could go with the 4gb and get really good 8gb on my own, any suggestions on which ram. also seriously anyone know a good backup program so i won't loose my game installs and what not, i have a 1TB external just need a program to back up.
