im holding off right now because the Intel drives have a Limited replacement only return policy. not sure if i want to eat the ~$560 bucks just to get another 40GB ssd that i practically have no use for.

i have dual 500 gb drives in my current laptop, 2 320 gb drives (one of which is going back in this computer when i sell it as im taking the 500's out) and a 160gb intel ssd on the way.

i plan on putting the ssd in the M17x i ordered along with one of my 500gb drives leaving me with a 500, a 320, and a 250gb drive (that one im going to keep as its part of the original equipment of the M17x.)

Probably. There have been reports of people not being able to config base components.

Definitely not sold out. I just ordered one with the base hard drive (160gb). On the web I didn't give me any options other then 500 or the SSD so I just called and placed the order. That being said on the phone route initially there was pretty much no discount.

I think Dell is only giving discount on the configurations offered on the EPP specific spec machine not allowing you to downgrade stuff you don't want. I ended up complaining and receiving free next day shipping and receiving a 30 buck discount. Not much but better then nothing I guess.

Interesting. This could just be an error on the site, like bluetooth.

Also for those of you interested in running Ubuntu, from what I can find there are should be no problems. Someone on the Ubuntu forums is trying to get a program together to control the AlienFX lights. This should be interesting.

I'm honestly glad they're taking off parts so they don't go into production and bascially telling people their orders will be delayed. Better knowing now either you wait for stock or order what we have than order stuff that isn't available and be pissed when a delay happens =)

i was tempted by the SSD upgrade. but its what you can afford that matters.

for info thou my i7 core pc runs with an X25 intel 80GB SSD and a 2.5" WD black7200rpm 320GB HD as back up, the western digi is a flyer but that boots my pc up in around a minute and thats with 6 GB 1800mhz ddr3 and the cpu at 2.66Ghz

but the SSD boots it in 25-30 seconds!! which is awesome, so anyone looking at ssd for the MX11 go for it, but what i will say is 'TRIM' is very important for SSD's, and i was lucky that i bought my ssd with it suppoorted but alot of SSD's didnt, that was in october last year but i had to wait till november for the firmware update to get trim enabled,

so i dont know if the dell ssd included supports trim hence another reason with cost why i held off, :)

The folks over at Hardware heaven have reviewed the M11x and concluded that it is:

"Without doubt one of the best laptops we have tested... if not the best. Not only that, it’s right up there as one of the best products we have ever tested, in any category."

You can check out their review at : http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews.php?reviewid=924&pageid=19#ixzz0egUVAr2f

One of the most interesting conclusions they reach is that the machine's performance will greatly benefit from the installation of an SSD.

    Bronsky

Hoo-rah, the manual lists how to replace the battery. So the battery pack is replaceable and Dell provides instructions on how to do it. That should end at least one gripe people had with this awesome machine.

    Edit: a couple of things...
    • the system chipset is listed as Intel GS45
    • the manual is just as unspecific as everyone else regarding the SIM card feature (page 22: SIM Card slot -- Allows you to install a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) to browse the Internet, check e-mail, and connect to a Virtual Private Network. To access these features, you must be within the network of your cellular service provider.)

No he's right actually because the 11x is a very big for an 11" netbook. It is almost as big as 13" notebooks. The dimensions of that 13" are 12.4"x9.29"x.86" inch the dimension of m11x are 11.25"x9.2"x1.29" so the 13" is 1" longer but has 13" screen and has same depth as 11x but 11x is also 1/2" thicker. This was one of the things putting me off the 11x is the size, seems like it would have been better just to make it a 13" with the dimensions it has.

I'm excited to get mine. If you haven't checked lately go back to the first post for a ton of links that should keep you occupied for a while. The Engadget show video really blew my mind. You don't get a feel for the size of the machine until you see the guys handling it. It's freakin' tiny. Some people are complaining about the weight, but I see it as a plus. Take a look at the Hardwareheaven review and in particular the internal pictures. It looks like the entire bottom half of the chassis is magnesium. Reminds me of my M15x which has the same design. The extra weight is due to all the nice magnesium which dissipates heat and also makes the chassis extremely rigid. The M11x is not a flimsy cheap plastic netbook.

The M11x is 11.6", not 11". You can't really say it's big for an 11" laptop because it's really not.

Soft touch refers to the type of paint used. It feels slightly rubbery or soft to the touch.

The SIM card is used with the GSM WWAN (Gobi) cards. So if you use AT&T WWAN you would insert the SIM card into the slot. Verizon does not use SIM cards.

Google Alienware M17 and find all you can about the paint on it, like videos, reviews, etc. That's the material they will be covering it with.

Yeah but one thing we've been unable to get a clear answer on is if we need to get a specific plan from AT&T or if we can just pop in our cards and they will work with our data plans. The IGN review mentions that their iPhone SIMs didn't work but said it was because they needed to unlock their devices (which is weird because my iPhone SIM works with other phones). IGN also followed up with saying that it should work with any other data-enabled SIM, but didn't try it out.

Yea, this is my biggest problem with the 11x, if I used laptops more often i would go Sony Z in a heartbeat but the 11x is cheap with all the discounts so i'm willing to put up with it's hugeness I think anyway. Will see when I get it LOL

I like it too, but it isn't a deal breaker. If you tend to transport your machine around a lot in a sleeve/bag which I would assume would happen with the M11x. The soft touch paint can eventually rub off in the corners, etc. So while the soft touch is matte and doesn't show as many prints it does show wear as well.

I have owned a couple of Sony Z's and I wasn't exactly thrilled. A lightweight notebook has its advantages, but you usually have to sacrifice some things.

Sorry, it requires a specific WWAN data plan. They usually start around $60 a month.

Is this 100% positive? Because both the IGN review and multiple reviewers at CES have said you can just put your SIM card in it (one going so far as to say that the M11x is filling the slot that Apple refuses to fill with tethering or something) and as long as you have a data plan, it will work.

No one at Dell seems to know the answer, though.

No one can be 100%, but this would be counter to what the carriers have been doing for years. The M11x isn't the first notebook to have a WWAN card and SIM.

There was an update on IGN's review that stated they were incorrect in that you could just take the sim card out of your phone. Youd need a new one since the m11x uses some new brand of compact sim cards or something like that. This is all from memory so don't quote me on it..

The two reviews so far were a bit weak. You guys will do a better job I am sure.

Once I see some real reviews here I'll probably pull the trigger. I grabbed an ASus n10j yesterday to hold me over for a while but I don't think it will do.

The M15x is huge for a 15" machine and the M17x is massive for a 17" machine. Time to put away the skirt Nancy. :p

That's true. It just seems odd that so many editors and reviewers would push this feature when it's just the normal netbook feature.

Just for reference, here are some videos saying you can pop out your SIM card:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBrCWdxVNPQ
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/4015282/ces_2010_alienware_m11x/ (this is the one that specifically mentions an iPhone SIM)

I can't seem to find anything about that on IGN's review :( I really wish this would be clarified. I'm kind of annoyed that everyone at CES was spouting this off like a kid after his dad said he might be able to get a dog for his birthday.

I meant that it's not an 11" laptop, it's an 11.6". If you're really concerned about the extra .5" in thickness then I'd figure you would want to make sure you're not saying this laptop is marketed a full .6" smaller than what it really is.

are we really making a fuss about people calling it 11" and not 11.6"?!? we all know what size it is, thats called shorthand so we don't have to type everything out... its common knowledge that 9"=8.9",10"=10.1",11"=11.6",12"=12.1"13"=13.3" etc. etc.

LOL my 12.1" is a 12" my 13.3" was a 13" my 11.6" will be an 11", I'd like to think people are smart enough to know the actual screen sizes so you dont have always have to type out 12.1, 13.3 etc... :)
