How will the backup media come? on USB stick? I'm asking just in case I have to update the SSD firmware for TRIM support, in the absence of a disk drive.

Used your codes. Thanks!! Btw, not sure if this is typical Dell but the code comes off the price before codes/epp discount. So that made getting the 100 off easy.

This is the first Alienware notebook that I am interested in. All in all, I think it is a solid notebook, especially for it's price. Decent GPU, immense battery life even at high performance settings, good port selection, etc. The only problem is the processor, I think its very weak at 1.3-1.6 OC. The i5 version will be nearly perfect though.

Now only if they would make it look like something that didn't come from Mars...

Does anyone know how to apply the extra 3% DPA? I just applied and have already used epp 10%, $50 and $50. An extra 3% would be even better. Rep for the coupon and rep for someone who can help.

Epp is the employee purchase program. You can go to dell university and get pretty much the same discount if you are not employed.

EPP is for Students, and Businesses that are members. You might ask your employer if they get any kinda employee discount from Dell, most companies do, but they fail to announce it.

Also, You can always try to get a DPA online, and it will tell you right away weather you are approved or not.

I wish I understood why people have this opinion about alienware. You can turn off the crazy lighting if you need it to look more professional, even cover up the alienware logo with some electrical tape or something if you really wanted to go that far. Similarly, on the top you can put a sticker over the alienware logo and whaddaya know, every flashy part of the notebook is gone.

I dunno why you would go to all that trouble, I dont think it looks particularly "toy"-ish or whatnot but the option is there. Sure the m15x or m17x can look rather daunting but yea, they're huge. the m11x being as small as it is wont look "too flashy" or whatever.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm specifically directing this post towards you, its more just how so many comments on sites like gizmodo or engadget are filled with raging hatred over the look of alienware laptops and I really wanna understand why.

By the way, I know I was somewhat rude earlier, but I think regardless the OP should be updated, even if just as a placeholder, that the su4100 will likely have an overclock option but it's unconfirmed, then update it after someone like me finds out in 7 days or so.

Also, that the known/total differences between the su4100 and su7300 amount to 1 MB of cache that gives roughly a 2-3% performance improvement and VT virtualization technology and SSE4, SSE4 which is relatively inconsequential (can anyone confirm this/ have any specifics about what SSE4 can get you?),

Also could possibly include that VT, despite being a nice addition is not required for vmware AFAIK, and that to utilize windows xp mode you have to spend $130 on the business windows 7 upgrade anyway.

Finally, steven, could you explain how someone takes advantage of the DPA 3% discount? I tried to do a run through of a possible order and saw no way of applying that particular discount.

Hi Eggs, at this point I am only wanting to post fact on the 1st thread, I am sure you understand. I have posted a comparison link for the 2 processors.

As for the DPA, I could not figure how to use it online either, I tried the method I always used before, which was changing payment type to credit, and then it would bring up a link to take advantage of a 3% offer using the DPA, but that link no longer comes up for me. So what I would suggest is, Give EPP a call tomorrow @ 1-800-695-8133, and they will be able to add the extra 3% (which is only about 10-15 bucks). Make sure you make good use of the coupon codes I posted, they are only good til the 4th of this month.

I got the DPA discount to work once. It took forever, just changing back and forth from DPA to CC a couple dozen times; it finally came up, clicked it... and then my cart was empty...so strange.

Yeah, thats fine, it does make sense to at least wait until we know for sure before you post anything about the overclocking. The comparison link does spell out the differences between them although I predict more people will come in asking what the difference is because its not really clear enough to the layman.

Unfortunately I dont think I can apply the $50 discount to my already placed order, and I'm probably not going to retroactively apply the 3%, but its good to know how you got it to work. I thought there was more to it than the CC switch, I had tried that just for giggles and didnt get anywhere with it.

I contacted dell to make an order in europe where where you cannot choose wwan yet, and asked for upgrade option for an upgrade option on it.
I was told that you can upgrade the wwan module afterwards - everthing (so the slot is connected to the sim-card slot and an antenna) is set up already, you only have to plug it in. But they card itself is not yet available in europe.

I'm trying to get a written confirmation on thart before I commit the order....

Still think it sucks we cant get the Name Plate Engraved though :(

How is this for gaming considering how poor (I guess?) the CPU is?

Why would this be superior then say, an XPS 16 in terms of gaming?

How does it fair against an Envy 15 on gaming power?

Yes, i asked for the plate name to, and was told it was previously supported for the larger models, but they dropped that support in europe.

I really believe you can plug in the wwan afterwards, i'm only a little concerned about my contact at dell being right that the antenna is preinstalled. Without it reception would be put down to a simple usb wwan module, or even worse.

But if I can get a written confirmation it will work I can use that in the future when I ask for the wwan module or there are problems...

The M11x is not meant to compete with the performance of larger laptops. Look at the specs of whatever laptop you want to compare it to. There are lots of benchmarks to look up on cpu or gpu.
You will probably find that the M11x may be inferior to some 15 inch notebooks, but its not meant to be better than those, its meant to be good enough for most games and sill be small and have better battery life.

I think most games will cope fine on it, my only worries are large strategy games, like Supreme Commander and also the new Supreme Commander 2 :D. I think it might struggle on those as those are so CPU intensive.

Would it be a good idea just to buy this at its extremely base price? And Just buy more RAM, better HD, and the higher end processor myself?

Because you can get this for $619 + tax. (2 x $50 coupons, 1 from the email, and the other for purchases under $999

Besides, is that upgraded processor even worth anything? This laptop is for gaming and school only, hence the super portability.

Wazn as discussed a few pages back, the processor from SU4100 to 7600 is only a 5% increase in performance, as the only change it have, is an additional 1mb Cache in the chip.

Hence it's not worth it to get any upgrades at all. Buy the ram, HD at newegg or whatever.

As for the higher end processor (SU9400?) I'm not sure if the M11x can be slotted with this processor.

But once you get the SU4100, remember to overclock it, it's only a 1 degree rise in internal temperature.

1timedeal is absolutely right. The only question, and this would be rather devious of dell, is if they disabled overclocking on the su4100. Nobody will know that until likely the first people who ordered su4100s get theirs, so you're out of luck having that guaranteed before purchase unless you want to wait 7 more days or more before ordering it.

Assuming the su4100 can overclock, the su7300 upgrade is laughably overpriced. They are nearly the exact same processor, and with the performance anecdotes being put out for the su7300 in an m11x, an overclocked su4100 will run most if not all games even more smoothly.

Make no mistake, dellienware knew EXACTLY what they were doing giving this laptop these CPUs. There is arguably no need for any more cpu power with the overclock option if you talk solely about games, and I'll probably always prefer these CPUs' insanely low power draw to any future upgrades. The thing gets like 6+ hours battery if desired!

he meant overclock the su4100 when you get it. The one they offer standard on the m11x. The bios is confirmed to have overclock options. Dont consider any possibility of sticking a su9400 in there at least until some enterprising individual does it himself and explains how to accomplish it. And say goodbye to your warranty :)

just so you know, theres three processors we're talking about here. the su4100 is the standard no frills pentium version with 1mb less cache (which is the sole provider of the 2-3% less performance compared to the upgrade) arguably meaningless features crippled arbitrarily to provide a cost-minded option for the m11x and similar.

The su7300 is the core 2 duo version with those arbitrarily cut features enabled, 1mb more cache (2-3% more performance as such) that costs a hilariously overpriced upgrade fee of $100 non-epp. The 7300 and 4100 have basically the same exact processor design in them, save for that cache amount mentioned. This is why it would be ludicrous for Dell to not allow overclocking of the su4100.

The su9400 and su9600 are the top of the line C2D ULV processor with a stock clock of 1.4ghz and 1.6ghz. This is the cpu I and possibly others are tossing around as a possible future manual upgrade option, which would be cool. Who knows what the possibility of that is, I'd certainly like to hear some solid theories. Like I said, don't even consider these ATM because its nothing more than speculation.

Isnt the SU7300 overclockable to 1.73 GhZ as well though? So saying that the SU4100 is equal isn't true at all if BOTH are overclocked?
