Sweet thanks. I already have a bootable thumb, mainly for reflashing video bios for overclocking. I'll make my 8GB stick bootable, and do as you said. Thanks again for the advice. +1 Lucky me, I'm a dork, according to my fiance, so I have a ton of computer stuff with me, and my Inspiron 1720 so it should be a breeze.

    Thanks Patch, +1 ;)

I kinda wish that Dell does something similar to what HP did with the Envy line and made all the bootable files and recovery stuff on a SD card instead of on a CD...when the computer actually has no CD Drive!

Use this utiliity to create a bootable usb stick

    http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe

More info on the tool here:

    http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool

I've used it for loads of things.

it takes an ISO image and "burns" it to a USB key and it'll let you boot from it etc.

no. they aren't all readily available from dell either. this is the problem i'm currently having.

as for a sleeve, i'm using the mandarina duck sleeve i bought for the adamo. its just barely too big for the m11x lengthwise.

Yes, though you may have a better processor, the M11X has a much better GPU. The 8600M GT is a 256bit card. Overclocked with a 2.5GHz CPU, I was bottlenecked by my 8600. See sig for benchmarks. Note that out of the box the 335m scores over 6100 when the cpu overclocked in the bios is enabled. The bottleneck in the M11X is the CPU. Also the 8600 is a DDR2 256MB card. The 335M is a 1GB card. 8600 is GDDR2 where as the 335M is GDDR3 emory type.

Gaming is much more GPU reliant then CPU. Some games require more CPU power, but not many. For gaming, the GPU is much much more important.

Short answer, yes, gaming on the M11X would be a big step up from the Acer based on the GPU.

To answer de disc and driver questions: it comes with a windows 7 DVD and all the drivers are on your harddisk. The DVD is bigger than usual: 4.9Go. So either you buy a 8 Go usb key or you simple make a bootable usb and lauch your backup ISO from the HD

To all of you guys who want to boot from USB flash drives.

A flash drive with 4GB minimum is required. All data in flash will be erased.
Insert flash into any windows machine.
Then go to start, and run cmd.exe.
    Type as follows:

    diskpart
    list disk
select disk 99 (99 is example....)
    clean
    create partition primary
    select partition 1
    format fs=fat32 quick
    active
assign letter=x (any letter will do. I usually use X)
    exit

Then close the window and copy all contents from Windows 7 disc into that flash drive.
    It's done ;)

    @ aznguyen316:
People are always asking the same. Takes more time to type this message than fo find a valid How To ;)

    @ nuke737:
I always do like i said, and it always works... Ntfs is needed if you copy files >4GB. Fat32 is just fine for this type of job.

    yeah thanks ruigui.

I like having my USB flash in FAT32 b/c then it is natively compatible with my GF's MacBook and OS X. I can swap files and media that way easily. Only once I ran into a problem of a >4GB file (video game ISO) - nothing a little WinRAR couldn't fix =)

Anybody suggest a particular DVD USB drive that also burns disks with just one USB cable connected? A lot of them require two for burning.

Some that come with 2 can still burn with only 1, I dont recall which models but I've seen it mentioned in reviews.

I do not see the big deal though, you will only use an extra port for the 5 minutes it takes to burn

LiteOn eTAU208 series. Can be had for about $50. 1 USB cable (which conveniently can be stored in a slot underneath the unit).

I would be using this laptop to watch HD Hulu videos through my TV. I've read that YouTube HD causes some issues without Flash 10.1. Does anyone know if Hulu would work fine with Flash 10? Would someone be so kind as to test that for me really quick? Thanks!

So I've been "stalking" this forum for a while with much anticipation. It seems that the discussion has died down a bit but I hope to put some content up later tonight or tomarrow as my m11x is currently out for delivery according to fedex. I am in CT and ordered on 2/4 for those of you in the region that may be interested. More to follow...

Okay, I dumped my Vaio CW with battery drain and placed an order for one these babies. EDD is 3/15 and I can't wait!

However, I really want to do a fresh install of Win7 and keep the drivers on a separate disc. I don't have an external drive but I do have an Asus Crosslink adapter and a kit to run an internal CD drive externally.

I've seen in past posts about Win7 being the only separate disc included in the package and the drivers being kept on the hard drive. Are they kept in an image form in a hidden partition or what? I just want to know so that I can start planning. It's just a way to keep myself busy until I receive my unit.

So ideally, I'd like to basically end up with a separate DVD or CD with just the necessary drivers and blow the rest of the hard drive away so I can start anew.

Why do you want to do a fresh install of Win7.. there's really not much bloatware on it.. theres only CommandCenter.. some Dell backup.. and those.. i remember someone posting 3 things. but that's it. and those are pretty useful.

I am doing the same thing, because I didn't need any OS installed as I need Win7 Pro 64bit and I wasn't going to pay for the upgrade from Home Edition when I already have a license.

So, I am going to install Win7 Pro 64bit when I receive this machine but from reading all the info on the forums dell is missing some drivers on their download page :(.

Really? That's pretty good news then. I guess I'll just make an image of the laptop out of the box then. I'm not sure if I'll keep Dell's backup solution though as I use Acronis.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I've been trying to read this thread as much as I can but seriously...three parts and over 330 posts in this one already. That's a bit much.

Just thought I would let everyone know that even though Purolator does state my M11x is sitting in the USA, since Feb 17th with no updated status..

    " 2010/02/17 13:22 In Transit in U.S. via U.S.A. GROUND LINEHAUL depot "

They (Dell/Purolater) called (automatic message) saying it will be delivered tomorrow!

Though tomorrow its the only day this week I can not be home waiting for delivery...

the box always weighs more because the m11x is in what.. 4 boxes total? + packaging foam, booklets, psus.. etc. I don't know if 18lbs is too much.. but when my HP shipped it was about 11-12lbs.
    @chunk
I see.. yea some drivers do seem to be harder to find but its more than likely they'll either come up sometime soon or perhaps a work around X_x?
maybe there's a way to backup the drivers ? lol I dunno
    @Mikers
    yea no problem.

Well, I semi failed at my wow frapsing. I did get the start of Marrorgar 25 man, but I did not have any time to setup my ui to the new screen, and for some reason my SCT was showing things I had turned off. Anyway, I do have a 1 min video of the start of the fight, but its like 700 meg. What do people use to shrink these videos?

Unless you ordered with Gobi from the start that will probably not work as the WWAN antenna cables are not included if you do not choose it at the point of ordering.
