for those who have received their machines, have you tried putting your iphone sim inside to see if you can connect to a 3g data service?
-
@ahahnslot
You only have that option if you ordered the AT&T Gobi card. And the word is is that the Iphone sim does not work with the Gobi. -
Only works if you ordered the Gobi
-
the thingis im from europe no gobi option when ordered?
-
you are likely missing the wireless and bluetooth drivers. read back a few pages
EDIT: just checked the support site and they are now there. -
You would probably have to call up Dell and inquire then ahanslot. Not sure what the Gobi situation overseas is. Good luck with that.
-
i will ask on the online chat and see what they say
-
Sorry if this sounds too obvious but didn't Dell include a driver's disc?
-
chewietobbacca Notebook Evangelist
Just a recovery disc i believe -
Nope, it was the card reader drivers. Tthey still weren't on the site when I checked and the only DVD mine came with was an OS disc that didn't have any drivers. That said, I plugged the original HD into a USB enclosure and plugged that into my M11x. Then I had Device Manager search that drive for the drivers and it found them.
It's a JMB38X MS Host Controller and SD/MMC Host Controller, if that helps anyone.
Also, the Alienware Command Center isn't on the M11x support page yet. The rep had me install the one off the M17xR2 site, though, and that worked perfectly (i.e. it shows a picture of the M11x on the settings page and everything). Scared the crap out of me, though, as if it was different, I'm sure the firmware update it installed could've screwed things up.
All is well now though.
-
On Dell machines you can sometimes find the original drivers at C:/Dell/drivers. That is unless the original drive has been formatted.
-
Sorry if this has been asked, but has anyone gotten MotionJoy to work on their machines so that they can use their PS3 controllers via Bluetooth?
-
I don't think they were there on my M11x. I figured that'd be a good place to look, too. Ah well.
-
I'm going to try it as soon as I get my machine.
-
Thanks for finding that out for us. I have an SSD ready to drop in when my machine arrives tomorrow.
-
can I get a link for the lazy to the support site please?
*edit* nm is this it? -
Ya I will try it out as well.

Dell Drivers -
Hello,
Just got my M11x (order date 2/4 delivery 2/22 in MA) and have to say I am very happy. It is a very nice laptop. The build quality is very good for the price. I just ran the OCCT 1h test and everything seems to be running great. 2 observations thus far...
1.) The Fan throttling noise. Everyone said their unit is near silent. Well mine kicks in periodically (every minute or two) while web surfing etc. but my temps are low(39-40c). Does anyone else hear fan throttling or is it me? Now when I ran the OCCT test seen below the fan was steady (which is totally acceptable) with temps around 50-53c. Why does the fan always kick into higher rpms when the temps are low? My guess the fan rps go from 500 to 2000 without a slow gradual increase as temps go up.
2. The plastic screen cover. Well it is a bit cheesy. I wish they had put in glass or a matte finish but I will deal. Also it looks as if a 12.1" could have fit into this chassis. I do have a minor gap up at the top where the outer shell meets the plastic screen cover. Not a biggie. I will tell Dell. Again I think I will deal.
So far I am very impressed. I build my own desktop pc's and this M11x compliments my Coolermaster Storm Scout case very nicely. Especially with the Alien FX all red. It really is its mini me. I loaded a couple of games (DOWII and Sins of a Solar Empire). I also ran a DOWII bench the numbers got a bit low but maintained 20 FPS with everything high at 1366x768. I have not tinkered too much. Sins ran great but I did not have a large fleet nor many enemies. Will try again when I have some more time. I am also downloading Demigod. We will see how it handles. I have it OCed and stable as you can see from the images below.
Let me know if you guys have your fans kick in. I just want to make sure I do not have a dud. I hope you all get your M11x soon!!!
Thanks.

Just finished loading all programs and played a round of Modern Warfare 2 at 1366 x 768. M11x/GT 335M is phenomenal. Albeit lower detail at 720P compare with my 1920 x 1080 desktop, but the smaller size made the 720P resolution nearly identical to my bigger 24 inches monitor with ATi 5870. There were no frame rate stutter or slow down.
Intense multiplayer combat was fast and fluid, I'm sold on this netbook. During heat of MW2 airport scene, lots of close quarter fights and explosions, my temperatures were
Core # 0 52C
Core # 1 52C
GT 335M 57C
Hard drive 37C
After typing this review, in about 2 mins, my GT 335M is down to 44C now and both core are down to 45C as well.
well done Dell! -

Same impressions I had. Glad to see more people recieve their units today!
Very good temperatures, and despite being 720p, the small screen size made things look sharp still!
For those who have BFBC2 and know how to tweak it, please bench it when you get a chance. I didn't get a lot of time to play around with the settings, and I won't be home tonight to test it out, but last time I tested it I didn't run it w/ HBAO and shadows off (didn't force DX9 either). My gut says the numbers go way up from it -
Mine does this too. I'm not terribly concerned about it, though. I imagine it's something that'll be tweaked in a BIOS update.
-
Okay thanks. It is just that some have said theirs are silent so I got a little worried. The temps appear to be well within specs.
-
Is the above with your CPU at the stock 1.3GHz clock, or did you up it in the BIOS to 1.6GHz?
-
@Morkeleb - You have good taste in Lappys
-
Yeah. The only thing that's annoying is that if I bring the laptop to class, the noise will be noticeable. Again, hopefully it'll be addressed sometime soonish.
-
Yep, my fan behaves the same, I wouldn't be worried at all.

Have you tried any fan control software?
I'm sure there's a software solution to turn on/off the fan based on load etc. -
Hey Howard,
Is there a NBR Review of the M11x planned? Honestly, I'm trying hold myself off from ordering one (It's quite a bit more pricey here in the UK) until I see the NBR review.
Not that chewie's review isn't utterly fantastic, of course, but I really want to see a second review of a production unit.
Such a pain to fight between keeping my M1530, or just buying the M11x...
Anyone able to test Dragon Age?
And finally - Chewie, if you've got any interest in Star Trek Online, I'd be happy to provide a 5-day key. -
chewietobbacca Notebook Evangelist
I'd be willing to give it a shot, but I'm currently tied down schedule wise.
If it isn't tested in the next few days, and I get a break, I'll let you know! -
@random
i tested out dragon age and it ran fine except that it lagged 1-2 seconds before initiating convo and ending convo. dunno if anyone else has that problem or not. -
No not yet. I just wanted to make sure it was not an isolated incident. My old dell 700m used to do this, but figured it was normal until people were saying it was silent. I hope they do come up with a fix. I dont event mind a steady purr. I just dont like quiet to full throttle to quiet again. Hopefully a firmware update will address this. Thanks all. Happy fragging.
-
cottabe,
Thanks! That's a bit of a weird bug. Before and after every conversation? Odd.
What settings did you have it at? -
Quick question: Is the AlienFX software available separately?
Im about to go to class; and don't want the LEDs on. -
someone earlier posted that the m17x software works
-
Well silent can be someone's loud. I find my fans loud but my fiancee says she never hears them and she's right next to me in the office.
-
You can turn off the fans by putting it in on-board graphics mode. It says in the power profile "GPU cooling - Passive".
-
Agreed.. I also cancelled my order and rebooked after my black M17x.
-
Women are naturally inclined to ignore their significant other!
All joking aside, that is good to hear about the fan not bothering others. Maybe you are just being extra perceptive/nit picky to it since you just got it? I sometimes just scrutinize stuff I buy when it cost me a big chunk of cash. -
I often have to say things multiple times for her to hear me...
-
Fingerprints drive me nuts, I go ballistic everyone someone whose just had something greasy for lunch borrows my iPod touch. So silver it was... But it ain't here... T_T
-
I was debating this as well. But the silver gets fingerprints just like the black, and to me the silver looked "cheaper" than the black (IMHO). Anyway just got through ordering a M11x black, max'd out with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, WWAN, Bluetooth and 4yr Advanced Service warranty.

HA! been so super busy lately haven't really thought about it at all, but now you mentioned
let me see what I can play around with tonight and do one
-
I've been playing Bio Shock 2 on my M11x all day without one glitch! It runs beautifully!
note: Not overclocked. -
Anyone know of an airplane/car charger that can be used with the M11x?
-
Just goy my m11x, can't wait to get some games installed. Quick question for Canadians. Did you get bluetooth?
Most people seemed to think that bluetooth was standard on canadian units but I didn't get it? Did anybody? -
I had to get my rep to add it on, was not in the options to choose. Did you get the wifi adapter?? its not an option and is not show in the final build...

Yeah, I did get Wifi, but no bluetooth. What number did you call to get it added? I called 3 times to get it added but all three times I was blown off. Two people couldn't find the part number and one woman tried to tell me that Windows 7 in Canada is not compatible with the bluetooth module. I'm going to have to call them again I guess.
-
The WiFi adapter definately comes standard regardless if whether it is listed or not.
Do non-barebone laptops come without WiFi built-in anymore? I find it weird people even question this anymore.
