Posting from my M11x atm. :) Currently DLing 3DMark06, the keyboard will take a while to get used to I think but surprisingly I'm not too bothered about the screen size.

I welcome your suggestion - However, I find it ironic that you don't consider gaming to be CPU intensive - I would easily rank it after the GPU in terms of priority concerning a good gaming system.
After all - Look at the number of upcoming games which include huge multiplayer based battles for example.

Would the rather low classed CPU on the M11x suffice? I've read a great deal of users who, despite not yet owning the laptop are already worrying about/ considering overclocking.

Does your choice of the word "much" imply that it will be a worthy investment even though the processor is severly lacking compared to that of the Asus G1SN?
Your personal experience is invaluable but I wouldn't neglect the overheating issues so quickly.

    http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/12/alienware-area-51-m15x-owners-outraged-by-overheating-cracking/

I'm fully aware that it's a previous model but have the new releases eliminated this problem to such a degree that I won't have to worry about my year's warranty running out and leaving me vulnerable?
After all a years warranty is pathetic from my viewpoint...

Aisuhime, not sure why your sad about 6.3k, it was advertised as 6.1k If you are sad cause your not pulling down 7k like some on the benchmark post, you should look more closely at there settings... they've been OCing there videocards as well as the CPU

on a side note: I am really pleased with my m11x compaired to its predicessor (Hp DV2z) its the exact same footprint with only an extra 1/8" thickness, but it runs my main game LOTRO on High settings around 60 FPS while the HP was Low/Med settings around 30 FPS! sooooo freakin pleased :D

I just did a full on battery test yesterday at work. I got 7 and a half hrs out of the M11x in power saving mode +2 bar brightness OC processor with web browsing and MS word. Not too bad. Right now, with lower settings, the battery bar shows 8 and a half hrs, but those numbers don't count because it fluctuates.

thanks jonjonk 7.5 hours is double what my best laptop ever did lol

so, does anyone know a good keyboard remapping program? Since Fn key always on is not available in BIOS, anyone know a program that allows to remap certain keys to certain binds? So when I press say F6, it will switch gfx instead of Fn+F6?

someone mentioned on another Dell that windows mobility center allows this. Anyone want to try for me?
"Just go to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Adjust commonly used mobility settings -> Fn Key Behavior" Is this available??

Hey all! I have a quick question that I don't think has been mentioned before about the M11X. I was wondering about the actual keyboard "keys" and whether they are a glossy type finish or more of a matte style. The reason I ask is because on my ASUS G1S they are kind of glossy and the grease from my fingers has given them a bit of a worn look. I wondered if over time this will happen to this one as well. Any thoughts?

In a way, the process in which the cpu is overclocked by alienware is both good and bad. By lowering the voltage, the hit on overall battery life is extremely small. The bad, well, you all know what lowering the voltage a little too much can do to the cpu. Just look at that guy named home, he gets BSOD constantly.

Yeah its never good to lower the voltage on an OC. I think this will be fixed in a BIOS update.

Nice to see some get it! :)

The issue is NOT the OC of the chip, since there are hundreds of thousands of systems out in the wild (mainly by Asus) that are clocked as standard at 1.73ghz, so higher than the M11 and rarely a problem posted.

The issues here is that some chips are likely threshold sensitive to the .1 voltage drop. This is counter-intuitive to operation and some chips could be a problem as a result.

Still, it makes no sense- Why do some manufacturers have almost zero problem with 1.73ghz (and market the OC as a feature), but AW / Dell thought it was best to ship with a voltage drop when OC a gaming device?

I can think of one reason, but I don't like it.... QC. If ASUS has a high QC department, they can assure that the chips they get are of good quality and able to handle the OC, if Dell has a more relaxed QC then they would feel the need to be more conservative with there OC :nah: lets hope thats not the case

How loud or noticeable is the fan in a quiet room? Example, will my wife hear the noise, or will it wake her during some UT 2004 gaming? I fear her :( ;) :(

Some say it is loud and others say nothing. Subjective, but some lappys are very quiet and avoid the "hovercraft" sound effect. Some are very quiet, since 14" or bigger lappys have the luxury of robust passive cooling to help the fan. My guess is the M11x relies heavily on the fan and it may get loud and very noticeable in a quiet room. Wrong?

Please humor me. Still in production purgatory since 2/3 :)

@bakar = Point taken, but already several reporting problems in this forum. Given the sample here is small and already some reports, that is not a very favorable sign. Just a few problems in a small sample is statistically significant. Let us hope it is first run production jitters. Well, I guess Dell hopes that, but early adopters do not ;)

If that were the case it would be Intel's quality problem and Dell would return the CPUs as defective, unless there was a clause in the purchase that Dell would eat the cost of any defective units to lower the overall cost of the purchase. As Intel's customers Asus and Dell expect, realistically, that a maximum of 3.14 CPUs for every one million sent out the door in a computer will be defective. Any more than that and Intel will cost them business.

For some reason I couldn't get FRAPS to properly output the benchmark results (should go to folder C:/FRAPS/Benchmarks/ but doesn't produce anything). Maybe it's not a supported feature of the free version? I don't know, I'll try again tonight after work.

Way smaller than I thought it would be, it's awesome. I don't mind the weight of it at all, it feels solidly built and is certainly lighter than my mac. (At least it feels that way)

Did any of the owners got the WWAN card with their M11x?
I am curious how well it performs when I comes to using internet via 3G SIM card.

Also has anyone tried using a sim card other than AT&T or Verizon?

    Thanks.

If the hard drive really is the only problem, I wouldn't blame Dell/Alienware. Hard drives are notoriously unreliable in general, and while it sucks to have yours fail in the first day, it's not like there's a design or manufacturing flaw with the system. Just be glad it happened before you had anything important on there. :) Also, be glad that it's an easy fix that doesn't require sending your machine back.

If you swear off a manufacturer because of a hard drive failure, you'll find yourself quickly being unable to find someone to buy a computer from. ;) Hard drive failures happen, they're the most common type of notebook failure, and it's simply a fact of life. That's why you ALWAYS need to keep backups. This goes for everyone, even SSD users.

Anyway, it does indeed suck to have your system break so quickly. Just remember, it literally could've happened with any computer, and it'll be fixed very soon. :)
