Nothing wrong with a reasonably priced current gen Vertex for around $200 in the meantime. I picked up a GSkill Falcon (my second one) and flashed it to the Vertex firmware 1.5, works like a charm.

Good for the next few months until the new crop arrive ...

Finally got my M11x ordered and ordered one for my wife and we're not getting ours until March 15th according to ETD...

I don't even have a computer put together atm that games... so I've been playing a lot of console lately. Went through Halo 1 again, been playing Bayonetta on PS3 (which is a really fun but frustrating game).

Whats the first game you guys will be loading up? I'm not sure if I'll do L4D2, or WoW... lol

EDIT: Here is a link, its called "Night Terror" http://www.l4dmaps.com/details.php?file=1693

Must try imo, do it with 3 other friends on hard co-op for best lulz.

I don't think the BIOS will allow for undervolting the CPU. To OC it is a simple on/off option. It'll be interesting once we get the system to play around with it, but the best option for battery performance is to run off the integrated GPU. As far as heat is concerned, if it is like any other current alienware, heat shouldn't be a problem.

In a previous post someone made a link to an undervolting guide (here is the link again: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824).

This guide uses a windows based tool, not the bios.
So chances are you will be able to apply it on the M11x.

I'm not telling there's a heat problem. The purpose of undervolting is not only to let the cpu run cooler (as you said' heat is not as much an issue in our case), but also let it use up less battery - which is what we want here.

Not that many will understand or care but..

When my M11X gets here I'm gonna be overclocking it right away and then I'm installing AmigaForever/WinUAE and Amiga OS 3.9 so I can run all of my fav Amiga games and Apps including Lightwave 5 and ImageFX.

I'll also be installing Zabawares Ultra Hal and Dragon so my M11X will talk to me and I'll be able to launch any app via voice command. I also have the natural voices so it'll sound like a real human. So I'm gonna have an M11X with AI and it's also gonna be the fastest ultraportable Amiga in the universe ! I'm gonna be having so much fun ! :D

I just purchased that same device for my son and it works great but it is not very discrete. Also, if you pick it up make sure you install the software first even though it says plug the device in first (I read that in one of the reviews).

Is OC via the option in the bios going to void my warranty? Looking for some clarity, some many different opinions.

i dont think this is a very compelling argument, i agree it would seem silly to put it there if it would void the warrenty but i have had past laptops with oc options in the bios and it has voided the warrenty.

to find out one has to look at the terms of the contact between the buyer and dell.

With the M11X it is OK and expected to have the laptop OC in the bios. Any 3rd party OC tools will void warranty.

I thought Alienware was designed to be overclocked. They're the performance end gaming laptop. It would be kinda silly to void the warranty especially if OC options were in the BIOS. I can see if you had to go through some unconventional means to unlock the BIOS to overclock.

If anything, just selecting the "Overclock" option in the BIOS should not void the warranty. Good question for someone to ask a reputable AW rep though.

Really the OC option on the M11X is more like a turbo option. Its a simple enable/disable option.

    it will not void warranty.

im still not convinced as i dont think anybody here is a lawyer. what we need to do is find a copy of the contract with dell and do a search in the document for "overclocking" or something as such. shouldnt be that hard.

i wonder this myself but there are always way to log these things if dell really wanted to. e.g. log in the bios? reflashing the bio may clear a log if one is there, but it may be hard if your system has dyed from oc'ing ! lol

yea, if you need to sent your system in for a repair due to overclocking failures, your cpu would most likely already be dead. Reformatting would be kind of impossible.

A 100GB+ option? Cheapest I can find for either OCZ / GSkill is a 64GB for around $200 - thought I've recently found a Kingston 128 GB for around $230-$280 range. If you have any better links - I'd be *extremely* interested...

No. just take the disk out and use another pc or laptop to format. No problem.

However if there is logging on the bios then you are right that it's hard to do somehting about it except modifying bios, which would probably void warranty anyway.
I just hope dell is not so paranoid to really implement something like this. Anyway, it would only be easy to log provided overclocking features, if might be a bit more difficult clearly detecting external overclocking (through programs, assuming this is possible).

My guess is that dell has not formalized this and they decide on each case. If they get a hint this was due to overclocking they will deny to do repair without the customer paying for it.

It's in the BIOS - supplied *by* Dell. To Darkhan's original point - if Dell *didn't* want to allow the OC - they wouldn't put it in the BIOS. It's not like you're using a 3rd party app to OC the processor directly.

all im saying is until somebody can provide a legally binding document with statement saying you can oc without voiding the warrenty this is still pure speculaiton.

your argument is the same as somebody saying - if a car manufacturer allows a car to break the speed limit your allowed to do it.

Bioshock 1 and 2 I expect a good performance, GPU dependent games.
FarCry2 - same as above, GPU dependent.
For the rest, HL2 is more CPU dependent so...not sure what to expect.

Half Life 2 is CPU-dependent, but it's a 5 year old game. I used to play it on a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 and a GeForce FX 5200. I think the M11x will do fine at 1366x768.

So I am a newbie. This thing comes pre installed with steam. So this is directed at anyone who knows about steam. There is an offer on steam. Think it will expire before my m11x arrives. Can I purchase it now and be able to download it on the M11x when it arrives. Or will I have to download straight away to my current sucky machine? First to answer gets a free steak( I work in a butchers)

Ive always maintained a good rule of thumb, usually pretty accurate.

If the graphics are kickass, its most likely GPU dependent.

If the graphics are so-so, it is most likely CPU dependent.

Yes, you can buy as many games as you want between now and when your system arrives. Once you've completed your purchase, the game gets added to your Steam account. When your m11x arrives you just sign in and all of the games you purchased will be listed under the "My Games" tab, ready to be downloaded!
