    @howard911s - I think he may be referring to the Battery Icon on the taskbar maybe? Setting one of those options to passive for the fan

    And no, it shouldn't fry your mobo... it's only to disable the fan running for extended periods of time

    @howard911s,
    What I did was to close cover lid after extensive abuse of GPU, the fan would turn it off, now open the lid, you can surf...etc...without the fan on...try this...

    I shall try that once I get home, thank you... also info only.. I just called dell to set up return citing bad fan noise (just in case this fan methods dont work). They were very very nice about it, sent me return label, and no restocking fee.

    Hi everyone I am new to the forum. I just purchased my first alienware, well 2 of them one for him and one for me (her) lol. I am new to all of this. It looks to me a lot of you have a good knowledge of accessories and games that would be good to purchase. What I would like to know is what gaming mouse do you recommend and what are some good starter games for a newbie gamer like myself. Thanks in advance.

    I did try the close lid trick,

    I did the recycle graphic to GT 335 then intergrated then restart,

    I tried putting it on normal power, then power saver and restart

    I have put m11x both on integrated video + power saver mode then restart and do nothing more than surf the net like now....

    all of the above attempts were done after just surfing and listening to music and also attempted to do it after extensive urban combat in MW2. The only difference it made was how soon the fan comes up or how late the fan comes up rather...During game fan comes up instantly, surfing on power saver/integrated video, the fan comes on within 5 minus on each instances and refuse to lower which is louder than my recently built gaming desktop pc.

    As for cooling, M11x stays cool no matter what thanks to the fan,

    As for changing the fan to passive, if it works, I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable doing that less the system/mobo fries..... :(

    Dell did offer to send me a new replacement system, but I think this one is going back even if the passive fan works.. heat = killer.. :(

    @spoiledfree - welcome to the forum and the m11x owners thread.
    For the mouse, there is a several very good solutions, but really depends on what kind a money you are looking for to spend.

    1- Orochi
    2 - Gigabyte
    3 - VX Nano

    no one has posted anything regarding WWAN yet. also there are no verizon sim cards for this. its a different internal card thats works on CDMA vs. GSM.

    that second case looks as if its meant to have the m11x inside it while you use it(vent area on the bottom)

    By the way for those familiar with EVGA Precision, you should be able to control fan speed with that little proggy atleast I remember on my m1330 iirc.

    Yeah EVGA Precision may work since it has an option to manually adjust the fan speed etc... have you tried that howard? Maybe third party software will help

    @trent and spoiledfree

    It's spelled orochi, btw. And those are excelent mouse ideas. If you are wanting a bigger mouse, spoiledfree, you should check out logitech performance mx. I, personally, have the orochi and it's amazing. It's not too small but small enough for portability. It's quite expensive though, $70.

    For games, you should go on store.steampowered.com and look around, see what interests you. Check out Team Fortress 2, it's a fun, shooting game online.

    I was surprised to see the Verizon option in the WWAN section since it is CDMA only. That clears my doubt. Thanks.

    @howard911s :
    After closing the lid and reopening it after extensive GPU usage while fan is spinning, the fan will be off for basic surfing all the time. For youtube or hulu in IGP mode, the fan will turn on, but if stopping doing the video playing in both youtube and hulu, the fan would be off in a minute, and when going back to basic surfing, the fan will be stay off.. the whole system is kept very cool even fan is off...

    At least this is the case for my m11x...

    Is anyone regretting their m11x purchase besides home and maybe howard? The more I read, the more I think this machine could've stayed in development a little longer. Or are the quirks things that hyper sensitive people like howard with spider man hearing pick up?

    Considering that it's the first generation version of the product, I'm not surprised that there's a few quirks. Home's problem seems to be rather unique. The fan speed problem is annoying, but I have to assume that Dell's going to fix it in a BIOS update.

    To be honest, I'm surprised there aren't more recurring problems popping up.

    Boy am I glad I held off ordering this. One thing I've learned the hard way is not to be an early adopter of any electronic gadget or technology. Wait a month or two for the wrinkles to be ironed out. Maybe even longer in the case of the M17x with it's sound latency issues.

    Currently I'm at work surfing the web ALL DAY on this badboy (I know, I suck at my job lol). I got to my job at 8.45am and took maybe an hr lunch break without using the laptop. Right now it's 3.50pm, and my battery is only at 38% with 3hr and 27min left!!! I have my brightness at 2 bars, processor OCed, and on power saving mode. I did web surfing, occasional youtube watching (maybe 3 or 4 videos), and ms word. I'm also currently typing all of this out on this lapy. This badboy is more than meets the eye :cool:

    I don't know, but I don't really care either LOL As long as I can use this badboy during work without it giving up on me, it's all good :cool:

    edit: actually, since the battery life indicator fluctuates, I don't think 9hrs is possible. But 7-8hrs is!

    ^ I've only seen a couple 3Dmark06 scores (~6200) but in terms of gaming I would guess we may see 2-5FPS difference in some games due to the 1MB L2 cache difference. Some games are probably none at all

    well i saw the email and it said "try out BFBC2" and neither of us care to.

    the plastice E2E cover is PART of the lcd, they cannot be separated. ask me how i know :)

    try holding a piece of microfiber over the trash area and giving it a few sharp taps to see if it will fall down. you dont want anyone swapping out your LCD unless they have done it before. you have to disassemble the entire machine if its anything like the M15x. make them replace3 it if it bothers you that bad. that new they HAVE to.
