The M17x is atleast 3 times louder...
@Witcher you dont have to run the cooler fans at full blast though i never bought one so i cant comment on the extent of the noise..
-
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
after 10 minutes of play is better to run them at max because of the heat build
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
I like to keep it simple, and loud. I don't mind the noise at all. In fact, I like the noise.
However, I thought the whole M17x design was much cooler than the M1730. Do I really need a cooler? Because all i do with my Dell is raise the back and run fans at maximum. Never had issues.
Okay, better question: At what temperatures do the fans reach maximum speed? -
You will not need a cooler unless you plan to do some hefty overclocking.. The M17x cooling is fantastic, its just to hit those crazy overclocks on the CPU/GPUs a cooler is pretty much a must...
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Good to know. So would you say that 2.93 QX9300 and 640/1600/960 (Core/Shader/Memory) for the 280s are within the reasonable limits not to warrant a cooler?
-
Any over-clocking will add extra heat over the stock system. Using a cooler will only help PLUS it gives it a nice tilt up so no stand needed.
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
I understand, but it's more an issue of how much heat, and 'mad levels' of overclocking. Just asking under a pretense that is hypothetical; I might not use a cooler every now and then, but most likely, I will. Thank you for the information and input.

anyone get around to running the heaven benchmark yet?
i need to see if im doing something wrong with it. -
I can in an hour or two.
-
sounds about right on time...im about to take me a power nap...im dead on my feet right now.
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
I'm gonna run it right now JOhn. I'm going to try it on my P8600 before I open up and put the QX.
-
well, then ill stay up for a bit longer then...lol
i jsut want to see if im seeing things or what...i mean the detail is amazing for dx11...but at 1920x1200...fps look far to low.
edit:
and this benchmark does not use your cpu for anything except to load it up. (speculations of course) -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
What settings? -
try maxed out dx11 at 1920x1200 or 1920x1080
8x AA
16x AF -
The cards don't support dx11. Should technically be grayed out as an option. Is there a 10.1 option?
-
nope. no 10.1, but i think it tones down dx11 to somewhere around there...i ran it with a non dx11 card and it still ran, but didn't look like dx11 though.
hummm, this one may be a bit harder to regulate scoring with.... -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Yes, it tones down DX11. Even Nvidia cards can do DX11 on this benchmark, but the benchmark itself is restricted. ATi cards can to tessalation.
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
It's benching now. So does it suppose to stop by itself? Tell me what to do john !!! lol
-
heck, im still trying to see what settings are doing what...lol
we're going to need a general set of settings for everyone....
so you start the benchmark...
then click settings tab
make sure it's set to dx10
your highest resolution
AA off the first time
fullscreen on
then click render
high
high
first time bilinear
AF off
take all checks out of OCC/REFACTION/VOLUMETRIC - first time around
you can show the fps counter if you want from the interface tab.
then click apply
click settings to close...then hit f9 or click benchmark and have at it.
the next round..max all those settings listed up above. -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Start the benchmark.
Press f9 or use the mouse to activate the benchmark.
You will find a small panel at the lower-right corner of the screen with details of the on-going benchmark. It will go through 23-stages, and once those are done, you will get a result screen like the one Jhonkss just posted, with the benchmark run still going on in the background. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Tessalation is not available on DX10 only on DX11 Card. So current 4870 does not have tessalation option. It is greyed out. -

leave everything the same and run dx10 this time.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
how consistent is this benchmark?
Is it all over the place like some? (3DMark.....) or very repeatable scores? -
that's what we are trying to find out now...so get your copy and follow suit my friend...
well also have to do with everything else on high and no AA or AF...nvidia never seemed to like AA when i had mine. -
while you guys are playing with that I'm starting some Vantage runs with my T9900 and Cat 9.12.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
sneaky!
Is that 20284 your goal in 06? lol -
yup, easier to remember it that way. "keep your eyes on the prize" lol!
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I just have the top ORB results as one of my home tabs lol
Top results for a Core 2 Quad Mobile in 3dmark Vantage greets me every time I open it up

Look at my T9900 temps out here. It's not even that cold today, somewhere in the mid 30s.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
nice....
When I went outside it was like 40's (f)and my QX9300 was idling at 17c
That is always helpful! Especially on the GPUs (and especially the GPUs of the M17 haha) -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Wait, are you sure?
Because your current-gen ATi cards do have the ability to do tessalation, but DX10 is restricted. Can you not activate it or select DX11? Because that might mean a major bug in this benchmark. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Thats what I am saying. On DX10, it will not enable. Only on DX11. So to compare apple to apple, we should just run DX10 with same settings. -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Oh, right. I can run DX11, I just can't get the API features to run.
By the way, was that your score with stock clocks?
Note: By features I mean true DX11 and tessalation etc. So really, it's just DX10. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
CPU is P8600 Clocked @ 3.15Ghz and GPU is Clocked @ 650/1100 -
Time to get this party started. I have a feeling my QX9300 will help the GPU score more.

The Ati with 9.12 will hit 14K, especially with the QX9300. -
I'll try the qx9300 tomorrow or Sunday.

Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Why not tonight? Going to watch Avatar?
I am definetly will.
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Hmm. Can you take up the GPU any further in terms of OC? Or perhaps try the test at 4 x AF.
My last run was with the 8800m GTX SLi OC'd (630/1550/930), but this was before I incorporated the X9000 into my current rig.Attached Files:

Just not done testing with the T9900. My wife wants to watch 3 Christmases on PPV tonight.

Here is my Run with your settings. Check post #2049
Oops..i didn't see dx11 .. lol BRB
I'll update this with DX11 and tessalation off. BRB -
your going to have to run dx10...my card is a dx11 card so i can't trick it into thinking it's not. so it runs true dx11 -
Gettin there.

Already did one of those DX10 runs when I had done the initial run. I got the exact same result, with the difference of maybe 0.3 more FPS and 1 extra point over D3D11, which I assume was a fluke because no two results will always be the same.
Edit:
Nice Vantage score, Mandrake. Now that's some solid GPU power! -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
-
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Thanks for doing the test.
Yeah, seems like the true power of your cards shows up when you max out the AF, because your framerate hardly changes between the two settings. I bet you could even handle some solid AA.
