Will changing drivers help?

Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Changing drivers can help a little here and there; they might correct a serious performance bug in certain titles, but a bottleneck will still remain a bottleneck.
The best way to cope with those would be to up the GHz by about 400 MHz.
SLi excels on two main fronts. One of those is resolution, while the other is a cocktail of CPU speed and cache. You're good on both fronts, provided that you up the CPU by a few hundred MHz. You have a very powerful GPU configuration, so to maximise the SLi performance without letting your CPU hold you back, keep the resolution at maximum wherever it is possible. -

scook he come you are at 3.25ghz now?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Cuz I can be
Mandrakes trick helped quite a bit -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Had 3 or 4 runs now over P12200, this driver is much more consistent for performance than the 182.xx series was for me (also more tolerant of an OC)
For what it is worth, the 182 series also stuttered much more -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
so with mandrakes stuff. Is cooking helping you stay at 3.25ghz?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I can't say for sure if the cooling is the difference. Have not even tried to go further than I am already at. It is -2 outside but I am a little skiddish after that SSD blowout
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
-2 don't go outside man you can kill your computer
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
when you get inside run something at 3.25ghz and let me know what happens.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I have been inside haha. And have been running 3.25 for weeks
is nothing new for me
That cold will not kill anything Witcher, the issue is the cold bug, when silicon electornics get too cold sometimes they will not perform properly (or at all) until they warm back up. There is also the worry of condensation when you come back inside (since outside there is 0 humidity but inside there is some)
When I brought my laptop outside then back in last time (when SSD crapped out) the laptop was cold enough that frost formed on it inside haha -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
ok. So i'm going to say that it's just my cpu that can't hit 3.25 because of voltage. I'l do 12k on the gpu tonight. I have some free time.
btw Iturned on the 9400m and it started to use that when gaming instead of the 280;la. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
You are not alone. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Pretty sure that the limit is something else for you. Have you done the registry changes that Mandrake recommended? I did that and it allowed my to go up from 3180 to 3250 which has not blue screened once on me but has froze a few times (hardly enough to be mad about)
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yes. i was at 2.93 before that. i'm at 3.07. and it's unstable after that but i can go higher.
i still do my regular at 2.93ghz though. after 3.87ghz there was performance difference. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
are you still just trying to do a multiplier only OC don?!
I am at 10x and 1300/1300......these chips (and almost all others) love an FSB overclock as much as possible. ONLY raise the multiplier when you have no other option
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
i have tried. i hve tried 9.5 and 1333 which is 3.16ghz and it wasnt stable to finishh a run.
-
You need a Cryo Don.
-
What trick is this? Just curious for when I get my processor in
-
Awwwww, shucks. He took it out of his sig, otherwise I'd just point you there. And now that means I need a link too because I clear out my history all the time....
Also, Scook, just curious question- you on Win 7? -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Look what the cat drag in. Nice seeing you again on here Praetorian77. You been missing a lot.
-
No, I've been *cough* silently stalking and keeping tabs on everything *cough* following- just semester over here ended on the 24th of December, so hasn't been much time for me in between finishing up my proposal for my thesis and then Yuletide events. Was very sad to see Nvidia is delaying Fermi yet again....
-
better that they delay it then have it fail right out the door....

Here is the registry fix from Mandrake:
Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Processor
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\intelppm
In each of these set the value for Start to 4 (default is 3)
Credit goes to Mandrake for this

Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
And what exactly does it do? I read in mandrake's thread at the other forum that it's supposed to disable intel drivers. Any side effects at all? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I have not noticed any side effects so far, except in the device manager they show as driver not working. In CPU-Z it will show as never downclocking but if you run tmonitor the clock speeds are still in fact changing
Main side effect I have noticed, it makes your OS more tolerable of a higher OC
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
According to this, intelppm is:
http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/intel-vtune-performance-analyzer/topic/44220/
So i guess it seems safe enough to disable. -
Thanks Scook (and, of course, Mandrake).
Will get that set-up straightaways. Just out of curiosity though, any adverse side affects to bumping up the speed on your RAM to something higher than it's supposed to be for everyday use? I'm on 1066 and if it's going to fry the sticks I'd rather not as memory is only going to get more expensive real soon....if it's a bad idea I'll only pump it up to bench, but otherwise I really like having an OC'd proc all the time as I'm encoding video constantly. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
That memory can run at least 1333 for many years, I would not worry
-
i agree, there will be no problems
Also i cannot get Catalyst control center to install on my GTX 260m
its just so stupid ! I keep getting " no compatible hardware found".
It says right there that it offers a boost in vantage and i want it -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
ccc should install regardless if you have an ati card but i'm not sure if it will open. try an older version...

Is everybody's score correct? I don't think i missed some benches.
sidenote: I will spend more time @ www.lapgamer.com for the moment so if you have a question and i don't answer fast just drop by and ask me there
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Mandrake got his GPU score well over 14000 with the new drivers, so that will need to be updated. Otherwise all looks good for me
-
i was just messing around since the thread was deadish
-
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
Can you tell me which post it was drake? Or give me a link or something

Here you go.

Here are a few of my test runs.
Stock P8600
P8600 with a 1263 FSB
and my first run with a stock QX9300,Quite a differance. At least I think it's a QX9300. See owners lounge for my question on this.Attached Files:

I have it registered. $20 and you can do as many runs as you want and get offline results
-
Here is my first OC Benchmark with the QX9300 with the mem @ 1280 and FSB at 1280 with a mult at 10
Bumping the mem and fsb to 1300 the CPU scored 13301 and gpu scored 10524 for an overall of 11104 so doing so my score actually went down. I havn't messed with the GPU's yet. Any advice?

Nice run i will put you in the top ten list tomorrow
good job -
With the GPUs?
-
Yea, with the GPU's? I havn't changed anything on them, not even the drivers...Any recommendations on the drivers I should be using? I know my GPU score is extra low
-
Definitely Cat 9.12. There's a link in my thread on NBF.
-
@DR650SE: Gave 3DVantage a try with Cat 9.12 and your settings (1280/1280, Multi 10). Gives you roughly 350 more GPU-Points.

I'll give it a shot tommorrow. It's 230am here but I downloaded ATI Catalyst 9.12 Suite for Windows 7 and Mobility modder. Just have to figure out what to do with them. Are they also good for gaming or would I have to uninstall and revert back to stock drivers? Sorry to go OT
Second run Stock GPU Mem 1290, FSB 1290. CPU went down 6 pts, GPU went up 52pts. Overall went up 41 pts to 11,394Attached Files:

As long as u have your stock-driver installed you could compare to the attached Crysis-Benchmark-result (1920x1200, DX10, very high). Get an average of 31,70FPS @ Cat 9.12.
G´d night...
edit: Still used 1280/1280@Multiplier 10Attached Files:

Evil- I just looked over the main page again, and just a slight aside- the last run I posted up in here was at 11,700-ish (at least I think I posted that run up) before I got swamped in with thesis proposal-ing. I'll dig up the link (or just re-up the jpeg) in a few hours after I catch a quick nap. Not that it will really matter once all the new ATI owners start posting results, but hey....I can at least try to chase Scook once I've got some free time.

Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Just send him a pm Praetorian. It gets fix asap.
