haha, I get it from my fiance, when I call home she just asks if I'm nerding.

On a brighter note, I finally broke 18K on 3DMark06. :D Though not by much. But tommorrow at work there are no appointments so I'll spend all day trying to raise the bar in my office ;)

My family also uses the verb "nerding" quite often to describe me and my actions

    :D

Lucky for me, my family has no clue what I do with my free time. Otherwise I'm sure my father would tell me to "grow up".

So, still hitting walls with both the driver and my CPU clocks...for some reason, the QX9300 doesn't want to clock up to 1280 or up. Stays decently stable at 1240, but barely gets to login at anything higher. And I'll fiddle around with new drivers for the 280's in two weeks, because-

I'm off for my annual holiday backpacking trip through formerly-communist areas of Europe! Will be back in two weeks gents, and I fully expect to find this thread having grown by about 219219382938 pages, as well as a bazillion new ones talking about the new refresh.

Have yourselves a wonderful start to the New Year folks- will be back on the 21st! If I'm not, then assume Albanians kidnapped me for use in the trade and send Liam Neeson after me....

I left my laptop outside in 5 degree (f) weather for an hour to cool down before benching (the deep freeze is supposed to help)

The laptop did not like this....one of the fans made an awful noise when trying to start then the laptop would just shut off. After warming up this was fine. The SSD however was never right again, in a sata port I see nothing, using a USB dock it shows as an unidentified device no matter what driver I force on it

When I brought the laptop back inside, it had a frost on it lol (I did not attempt to turn it on though until fully warmed up and dry of course)

My theory is that condensation caused a short in the SSD and rendered it useless

My favorite line..."Hmmm thats wierd, I don't know why it won't print," then I head back to my office and snicker haha

Nope, I'm working on another post :p but when I get a good run going I hang somewhere. My runs are so inconsistant even when I do the same settings back to back. Been trying for a few hours while reading threads on my 1720. M17X is sitting in font of the AC running right now. It's almost 6 am here lol

    Does this count? lol

The irony is that I just got my M17x yesterday, it was a new replacement machine for my M17x with mobo issues.

I unwrapped it out of the box and enjoyed it for 2 hours before hearing it was outdated... and it's technically 1 day old. LOL.

    Could always try a Q9200 ;)
QS/ES available, cost less than £200, and only difference is 2.4Ghz starting block vs 2.53.

Quick question, if I do a clean install of just windows, rather then respawn, can I expect more consistant benchmarks in Vantage and 3DMark06? I'm considering it, because my runs, even with the same settings are very inconsistant. Perhaps it's just the instability of OCing.

Well, in spite of all the bad news about the A03, I at least raised the bar on my high vantage score. Had it going while working on my 1720. Which the HDD decided to die on :( , and then the wrong disc got reformatted  At least I had everything backed up to my M17X and an external.

    Overall: 13495, GPU: 13686, CPU: 13230
    Up From: 13474

    Hello All!
    Long time lurker :)
I finally fulfilled one of my dreams ever since i found out about alienware, and have bought myself an m17x. This was a replacement for my xps m1710 3 years ago.

    My specs are
    T9600 @ 2.8 GHZ
    4 Gb ram
    2*500gb 7200rpm HDD in raid O
    Sli GTX-280m.

I have freshly formatted as soon as getting it and running most of the latest drivers recommended here.
My video drivers are the 186.64, have tested alot of others including the latest ones, but these drivers give me the best 3dmark06 results...and this is where the problem lies.

I only get 13000 as my GFX score.I have read here alot of ppl with same video cards get alot better scores....are my cards faulty or am I doing something wrong? This is off a clean install, running the above drivers.

    Cheers from down under!

Your cards sound like they are working right, all the real high scores are done by overclocking both the CPU and the GPU's. Stock I get maybe 10K on vantage, don't remember on 3DMark06, but nowhere near 18K stock

    Hi all

I can't find many posts with my specific specs and a 3dMark06 score to compare. My current 3dMark06 score is 10441 which I believe is too low.

    Hardware - Q9000, 4Gb ram, 2x 280M, 2x 128Gb SSD (Raid 0)
    3DMark06 total = 10441
Made up of SM 2.0=4043, SM 3.0=4972, CPU=2949

This is running out of the box with no changes, 195.62 drivers drop 100 of the total score :(

    Questions:
Is this 3dMark06 score too low ? If so what should it be ?
Will a re-install from scratch help much ?
    Any other thoughts ?

    Thanks for your help

a reinstall may help, but make sure your not in stealth mode...far right button on the touchpad. Also it may not be too low for stock, but I don't remember what my 3DMark06 score was at stock levels. If your trying to shoot for high scores, you'll want to overclock both CPU and GPU

Stealth mode is definitely off. I expected a lot better performance out of the box, my M1730 (SLI 8800, 9300 CPU) actually gets a better score at 11,500 !

Do you have the 9400 disabled in BIOS? That might help, as well as disabling Hybrid. I don't know much about the nVidia cards.

Download GPU-Z, I have a screen shot of it in my sig on the attached links. Are you sure SLI is operating? Your score should not be that low, especially on 3DMark06. Not even on Vantage. Get GPU-Z and make sure your SLI is active. Your scores should be better with integrated and hybrid off I thought. Maybe Scook can jump in here and advise.

Overall it does, wjat CPU do you have? 25,096 does not look right at all. lol I have an Overclocked QX9300 and have only hit as high as 13,300ish for CPU score. Don;te remember what it was OCed to, probably around 3.25ish GHz. Are you overclocking anything?

Hey Drake, Do you know if the refreshed M17X will be compatible with the QX9300? If so I'm going to bench that against the top proccessor they offer. Since I have to put the 8600 back in for the return and I'll have a QX9300 hanging around
