Lucky. Need to call in and see if I'll be getting mine that soon... Otherwise I've still got 30 days until my EDD.

Apparently my order is on hold because manufacturing say my configuration is restricted. What does that even mean!?
-
a part u chose is incompatible ??? or awaiting certain parts to all work correctly. so a STRICT LCD or gfx card.
-
So do you think my order will be cancelled? The account manager configured my machine and it was all available on website
Alienware 17
16gb ddr3
Overclocked i74900mq
780gtx
256gb ssd and 750gb hdd
Anti glare fhd screen
Windows 8
I thought that sounded relatively standard -
could be the overclocked cpu. a few people said they disapeared for a while then got replaced by something else. or maybe the ssd config. why do you need a overclocked cpu. Its alot more cost for next to not much gain.
-
Thanks luis,
How would you compare the 4900MQ to 4930MX performance wise ? how much is it of an increase and future proof if we are talking WOW speivifically ? -
All options I picked are still available on the UK website. I had no option for a non overclocked 4900mq and that was the processor I wanted
-
not sure then mate. Ring em up and find out.

That may well count as "consideration" as far as contract law goes....again, I'm lo legal eagle though.... -
Lightning for the most part, and the brightness buttons being next to the arrow keys.
In fact it is much nicer to type with
It won't be much of an increase if you order the 780 Sli configuration, remember the biggest adapter is only 330w and the 780s by themselves consume quite a lot of power. That said, for a limited power supply and considering you're making a choice based on WoW gameplay experience I'd go for the 4900MQ.
Or you can just go all the way top of the line and show it off
-
Just got off the phone with Dell. Order is still good, but they said they were currently experiencing further delays...
-
Just added Order / Dispatch / Depot Status to this tool, I'll be adding new laptop content as soon as it's out.
Alienware Virtual Agent -
That is the only way we like our AW's
-
LoL then tech spec at Alienware 18 HD Gaming Laptop Details | Dell - sub Ports, Slots & Chassis false?
so there's only programmable keys? wi-fi button and other? -
On my m14 order it says overclocked 4900. As far as I know it should go up to 4900 only on the m14. Do you think this will cause a problem for my order?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta -
Should I be worried that my new order yet again is stuck in pre-production??
-
Luis,
So are you saying that if I opt for 4900MQ I wont notice a real tangible difference for not going with the 4930MX given that I have the 780SLI ?
Where would the 4930MX really shine and justify the $500 increase over the 4900MQ ?
Also regarding the storage bays, if I go with the Raid 0 configuration of 2 HDD 750gb, will I be able still to fit in 2 SSDs in SATAIII 6.0Gbs ? Im wondering if it is a good idea to go with 750gb HDDx2 Raid 0 for storage and 256 Samsung 840sx2 Raid 0 for running windows/games ? -
Most people go with SSD for windows and boot time, but yet others like to go SSD for games loading quicker. It all comes down to user preference.Me personally have never used a SSD before so i cant say but once my new machine arrives ill be getting 2 x SSD in raid and will try windows install and then a games install. Alienware 18 supports mSATA SSD so might get a 256gb for windows boot from that and use 2 SSD 2.5" for raid 0 games.
The price of SSD drives have dropped massively in past year and will drop again before xmas. In uk you can get a 256gb SSD decent brand for just over £130. Bargain. -
Luis what thickness HDD`s do the new models support? Will they take 15mm thickness ??
-
Well this one finally went into production. What do you guys think is the turn around time with in production status??
-
lucky for you still waiting in pre prod for 3 days. just been told by uk dell support "The order is on a quality hold at the factory. Once the quality hold is taken off the order will move into production."
-
Mine (uk support) they said that there was parts shortage for the m14 and thats the reason i'm still under pre-production...
-
There seems to be problems with the LCD screens at the factory for the Alienware 18`s. Not upto quality standards. Update incoming later.
-
I have just got off the phone to understand what it means by "manufacturing say my configuration is restricted". Apparently there is a parts shortage but they couldn't tell me on what part. So good news I suppose is it hasn't been cancelled but they cannot guarantee the delivery date of 19th July!
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Keep us posted, mate - interesting.... -
Did they tell you what part? It might be the same for my 17
-
I doubt my EDD of 24th June (given to me over live chat, different to 27th July which is on my order status page) is realistic. I am still in pre-production, have been since 12th June. Unless it goes into production then gets shipped tommorow, it's not going to make it for that date...
-
Anyone else order their laptop on release day and still has it in pre-production? Mine is still in pre-production and its been a week and 2 days now
-
Will do stevie, all parts have been QC tested and passed , just the bloody screens are not up to QC standard at the factory, still on going. Dell uk support will get a update from factory later today.
-
Prank what are those SSD drives like? they anygood? currently looking at a Plextor 256GB M5 Pro Extreme.
-
Ordered the Alienware 14 w/ the FHD 1080p upgrade and gtx 765m yesterday and it went from pre production and now today "In Production" in just 1 day here in the United States. I don't know which regions are the ones having problems with their orders still being stuck in pre production for several days now.
-
Great to see 14" in production at last. Welldone pal
look forward to seeing that 765m benchmark and bf3

I ordered my AW 17 late on the 11th, and it is still in pre-production. My guess is that there is a shortage of the Nvidia GTX cards given that Asus delayed releasing their JX and JH gaming laptops. -
My order finally went into production...
Alienware 17
4700MQ
16GB DDR3
GTX 770M
1920x1080 FHD
I think I got a decent deal.. -
The Samsung 830 (256GB) SSD I have is aftermarket. It has, and continues to serve me very well. Although I haven't run any benchmarks (so I cannot give any exact figures) it is definately very fast, Windows boots up quickly, games load exceptionally fast, etc..
I have not really noticed any performance degredation since I bought it..
The difference between an SSD and HDD is night and day. It is definately one of the best upgrades you can make, although I would consider buying them aftermarket since you can pick the SSD you want for much cheaper than Dell's offerings. -
What make is the 256gb ssd that is offered with the alienware 17 do you know? (Sorry if mentioned previously in thread)
-
ThatOldGuy Notebook Virtuoso
Dell often uses Samsung SSD's and HDD's. Which model I don't know.
Side note, Ideapad Y510p thread is beating this thread in most active threadsAre we going to allow this?
-
My 17 just went into production this morning. Ordered on 6/15.
Configuration:
Alienware 17
i7 4700MQ
16GB Memory
750GB hard drive
Nvidia 780M
FHD 1920x1080 display -
Your 2 days infront of me. The 18 has qc problems with the LCD panels at the moment hence why none have gone into production. Should have an update later today
From tech support uk:
"The issue is already escalated and we would have an update shortly from the factory on the same, It is the LCD screen that is being tested" -
So it seems the 14 and 17 are doing fine and the 18 is getting delayed.

Just something for you guys looking at the disk config options. You may think that just getting a mechanical drive and then putting in your SSD is the most economical option. But, by getting a HD accelerated with an SSD cache drive you get SSD like speeds out-of-the-box and when you come to put in your own new super duper SSD your old drive (now data) is running faster, win win
Dunno about the new models but the msata port is not as easy as most of the other components to get to on mine... -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Duplicate post...
-
Just called to check my order and apparently there are shortages on certain items. I ordered the m17x on 6/11 and its hard to believe that mine is still in pre-production...
-
I just ordered mine with the default HDD. I will add a couple SSDs and re-install OS when I get it. I don't know about everyone else but when I get a new laptop I format it and re-install OS rite out of the box.
-
You still have an M17x on order? Have them switch you to the new 17... I got switched and had no price in create. Mine was switched via the order modification department.
-
Oops typo on my part I meant the new 17.
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Of course if you are replacing the HDD as well as adding an SSD (x2 SSD's) then cheapest, smallest applies
-
do the new machines come with 2 x msata ports?.I know you can do 2 x hdds 1 x msata 1 x optical HDD bay, but im surre someone said the wiHD slot is msata aswell ???
-
Mine finally moved into production today. Still has an EDD of July 19th. Ordered it on the 11th around 4pm CST. Hopefully it will be here sooner than the 19th. I don't see how it could possibly take that long to actually build the laptop.
-
The question was asked, but I do not recall seeing an answer yet. While it may physically match the socket, it is unknown whether or not an mSATA SSD will function if installed in that slot. If it is not attached to a SATA port, it is not likely it will function. Since the SiBEAM card is not a SATA device, I would be shocked to learn that it works. It would be nice if it did, though.
The other consideration would be whether or not there is space for an mSATA SSD. The SiBEAM WiHD card is half-height. An mSATA SSD or full-length mini-PCI card will not fit in the chassis of the M18x R1/R2 due to a lack of available space. One would have to cut away part of the chassis to have enough length, and then there would be no place to insert a retaining screw.
