I know it got asked at some point on thi thread, but according to this video (a little ways into it) the GPU looks to have triple pipe cooling and the CPU looks to have double pipe. I'm pretty sure it was the 18 they broke down. The video is a breakdown at E3. Stinking amazing how easy it will be to get into our lappys.

Correction; It was a 17 they broke down at around the 2:57 mark

i think tbh it will apply for the 18 model, but maybe the triple pipe is extreme cpu only.yet again another one for Luis to clear up

Is it safe to say that the video card and CPU will be upgradeable later on, or at least the video card like previous versions? I know it will obviously be more expensive I'm just talking about a couple years down the line when it might be time for a new GPU rather than a whole laptop.

The 17 and 18 are MXM 3.0b slots so upgrade will fit. Purchase from dell to have the warranty included with the gpu upgrade.

Just one thing to bear in mind with future upgrades of the GPU. If 2 years down the road a GPU comes out that you want to use, if dell have not sold that card with your model then they will not sell it or support it. Normally this isn't an issue. I see R3 owners using 680m's and R4 780m's. It becomes a problem if the bios needs changing to support the card. For example with the 120hz 3D models. You do get 120hz when using an 'unapproved' card but 3D will not work unless a BIOS modder comes up with a fix.

Don't know if the '3D certification list' has been adopted in the new models though - Luis?

    Good Afternoon All,

I hate to jump in here, but just wanted to ask if anyone has picked up one of the new 14s? Wondering on opinions on it, as I think the 17 and 18 might be a little large for what I would be doing (MMOs etc). Also, sitting it on your lap, is it likely to cook your legs whilst gaming?

Regarding the screen, am I on the right track with the 14 and 18 only having IPS/PLS screen and the 17 with only TN because that's not fair. All 3 should have IPS/PLS panels so correct me guys if i'm wrong

Why use IPS for the 17 when Dell can recycle screens between 17-inch models? It's not competitive in the least, but it helps Dell reach higher margins.

If the screen is top-notch with decent viewing angles, it will be better than a cheap IPS screen. (The pictures on this website suggest that it is only decent.)

I believe you will notice a difference mostly when doing video encoding or 3D rendering.

That would work. If you need to save some cash this would work very well too

    SSD boot drive
    RAID 0 Storage configuration
small mSATA as a caching device accelerating the storage RAID

    Same as before 2.5".

It's hard to tell when we don't know what will happen 2 years down the road but generally we don't do backward-certifications.

Hi, I'm kinda new here, and I have a question. I ordered a M14x R3. It is still in production.
    My specs are

    I7 M4700MQ
    8 GB Ram dual channel
    720 GB Hard drive
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 1GB GDDR5

I was think maybe adding a SSD drive for windows (boot up, etc...) but I don't know if there is space inside the laptop. Can I add a 64GB SSD drive in a M14X R3?

Does anyone know if we have info from Dell that indicates the EDD are accurate? I can hope for earlier delivery but I think wishing for before the end of the month is a wet dream... I think realistically we are looking at the 2nd week of July at the least.... (Sorry to be negative but I think it is what it is...)

Hey I've been keeping up with this thread, figured I'd contribute for anyone else waiting on a 14.

Just moved to "In Production" on my 14. I ordered on 6/13, EDD still says 7/19. Pretty pumped- I'll be a first-time Alienware owner. Thanks for all the info constantly posted on these forums, it's a big help.

I'm also really excited to get my first Alienware. The M17 is actually my first high performance gaming computer. The one I'm using right now is complete crap and it can't do anything. It's a HP TX2000 tablet that's almost 6 years old. My parents brought it for me when I was 12 lol but now it's pretty much dead.

I hope you guys that already ordered or about to order your Alienwares would choose Windows 7 over 8 and we should appreciate Dell/Alienware for offering this as a choice compared to other manufacturers where you are going to be stuck with windows 8 and you have to get your own copy of 7 and reinstall etc... I been using Windows 8 since November on 5-6 different laptops and I can't wait to go back to windows 7.

There is something about the glass transparent look that makes it look cooler and the gadget on the right side where it shows weather and you have the start orb key where all your programs are instead of navigating through metro or using the win8key+F.

Well that was the worst order experience I've ever had. I placed an order after being told I could not ship to APO/FPO addresses. I find out that this is possible after chatting with an agent. I get my order changed, but I need to verify the credit card. Sure no problem. I'm on hold and get disconnected after 45 minutes. I call back later and the verification department is closed according the order agent, even though the hours posted still say they are open. I call back again today and after being on hold for 1 hour, I web chat an agent and get directed to a different phone number. I call that number and I'm told my order was cancelled because I didn't call. I almost threw my phone across the room. I think I've spent close to 5 hours on the phone just to have a cancelled order. Guess I'll stick with my 18x or look at a clevo.

    edit: spelling

Thanks for the update, but it seems weird to me, reason being, my m18xr2 (insurance replacement) is still under production, end was 13/06 but got the email last night, that it is delayed for 2-3 weeks because of LCD.

How come both m18xr2 and aw18 are having LCD issues at the same time?

Makes me wonder if m18xr2 had the same LCD and was just covered or I am getting aw18 instead of m18xr2.

As far as I know dell is the only company contracting the 18.4" screen. It may be that they no longer contract to make the R2's display and you are getting the new AW 18 display in your R2.

From what we've been told, this is spot on, michael. The new PLS panel will not work in an M18x and vice-versa.

It would not surprise me if the production line staff had mistakenly tried to put old screens in new machines and vice-versa, hence the LCD issues holding up orders. Of course, that is speculation at best. The panels are different, so the M18 would not have had the new display just covered up by the E2E cover.

If it's just the 18 that's having 'teething trouble', you might find that your gonna receive a new 18 as that would indicate your replacement is having the same issues, new 18 related....maybe.

Well, my 17" was ordered on 6/12 and today it switched to "in-production" like many others. I thought my order was probably going to be cancelled due to a) the large discount b) lack of parts since they stopped offering the Overclocked processors for a bit. The EDD shows as 7/19/13 with Next Day Delivery but I doubt that date is accurate. I would think assembly might take a week and within 2 weeks it should arrive.

Mine also says EDD is 7/19/19 but the fact that it's in production I think it'll be here by the first week of July, or at least I hope so. How much of a discount you end up getting?

My configuration on the Dell Site (when the Overclocked Processor was available) totaled $3,119. Now that same price only gets you the 4900@ 3.8 not the 4GHz.

    Alienware 17.3" 120Hz WLED FHD (1920 x 1080) TrueLife Display w/3D Bundle
Overclocked 4th Gen i7-4900MQ (up to 4.0GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
    NVIDIA 780M with 4GB GDDR5
    750GB (7,200 RPM) + 64GB mSATA SSD
    16GB RAM
    Blu-ray Drive
    Windows 8 Pro

The price I got before tax was $2,570 + Free Next Day Delivery. So if you add it all up the total discount was at least $550-$600 or about 18-20% Off. Given that this is a new launch I think that is pretty good :)

Good Luck. That would be awesome. But I think as long as they don't go past their original delivery estimate (I'm assuming it was around the 18th of July for you as everyone else it seems got that) they will not give you anything.

Dell rep called back this afternoon about placing an m18 order. He took my config:

    dual 780m's
    4700mq
    8 gb ram
750 gb hdd with 64 gb msata ssd

Final price of 3000 with 2 years support and 2 years accidental out the door with tax, 2nd day, and a 200 gift card. I confirmed the 780s four times, and figured not too shabby an offer for a new release. Now when I look up my order on Dell's site, the config shows 770s. Not too happy, and hoping its a quick fix with no hassle. Of course the rep is gone for the day and is not back in until Monday, so not sure how easy this will be.

A configuration like that would cost $3457and assuming you have any form of tax, that can easily increase to $3500-3600. Reps simply cannot give a discount this big, and it was part of the reason why dell cancelled so many orders. The rep could have intentionally mislead you....

I wouldn't be too hasty to cancel. This happened to my Order though to a lesser extent (they gave me the 64gb sdd cache hard drive instead of a 256gb sdd and 750gb hdd). I talked to them and they changed the quote, but added extra cost. So I said that wasn't what we had agreed and as far as I was concerned the original price was what it should have been so it was nothing to do with me that they made an error when sending it over to me for review.

They couldn't match the original price but it was only around £5 more in the end

doubt they will give you the 780m's unless you spend even more money on one of the more pricey pre-configured models. Sadly you can't select the 780m's in SLI with the base model and that is probably why you ended up with the 770m's. :(
