I'm with you. So much for "specs maxed for under $1000."![]()

important questions:
how likely will i be able to add my own ssd without voiding the warranty?
Since this is alienware, will we be likely able to overclock the processor?
Also, how likely is it that we can install our own processor upgrade to any other given processor that fits the socket? I'm thinking top of the line ULVs if possible. I'm assuming this hella voids the warranty.
I really need to be able to replace the hdd to justify this purchase. -
woohoo & i'm in asia! but how did u know? thx!
-
It's not specs maxed, but 1.3ghz CD2 + 4gb RAM + Nvidia 335M 1gb + 160gb HDD for $1k isn't bad at all. I'm loving the size and the lighting.
-
I agree, but I got a sick EPP discount that would bring it down sub $1000 for very good upgrades. If I can't get that to go through, then yeah I may look elsewhere.
-
alright everyone I'm really on the border on getting this and really need some advise....
Is there a huge difference between the two processors?
Is 160GB suffient enough for a hard drive?
Opinions on headphones?
opinions on external dvd/cd player they offer?
Overall best bang for your buck i guess you can say.
I play games like SC, Total War series, WoW.
Thanks for the help! -
the people asked for more, more options, more configurations. CPU + RAM + 7,200 rpm HDD, barely under 1,000. But if you look at this thread, lots of people were asking for options that would make it more than 1,000 dollars.
-
It does sound to some people to be better off buying a better machine with that price lol..
-
i am very disappointed that u have to add $$ for the cpu.... zzzz
-
Just dont get the $100 CPU and you can get much better upgrades elsewhere and stay under $1k. You wont see any difference in performance unless you use Virtualization.

VMWare FTW!
-
Not a huge difference in processors but whatev'. I think it's like 5% difference. 160gb isn't a big hdd but you can buy one on newegg for much cheaper than the upgrade that Dell offers. Don't get the external they offer, try and find one somewhere else. Headphones you should either use your own or buy some on amazon.

^^ Same. Going the Envy route. 1200 for an M11x vs 1450 for an i7 Envy with a 5830 (10k vantage) is a no brainer.
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
The Envy looks like ever other laptop that HP sales, no style whatsoever.
Not to mention that envy is going to burn you, HP doesn't have a concept of cooling. -

anyone know anything about the whole "installing your own SSD" route? Does dell usually get pissed if you open up your computer past the things that can be accessed through a panel of sorts?
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
Well, Alienware has always been good about letting people upgrade hdd and ram, so I wouldn't think that would be a problem, just send back the original configuration if it needs servicing.
Not sure about this netbook though, it might no be easy to upgrade, we will have to wait and see. -
I've never had a computer where any warranty would be void installing an HDD. I can assume say you'll be fine installing your own hdd/ssd on this, BUT seeing the build of this, I'm not gonna say 100% since it's a small body with built in battery. Don't think that changes anything though, like the MacBooks etc.
I'm noticing how much more we're paying just for the portability and battery life - not that it's a bad thing, as everyone has their own priorities. I still want this little guy, but just for fun configuring an M15x is just a tad more in price even with just a few options here and there. The whole waitin til March thing is killing me, I feel like between now and then something else will pop up from the woodwork with a decent, prob not as good as 335m, card and processor. Anyway, I'll probably eat my words once I get the chance to do EPP and call it good. -

Just pre-ordered mine.
Black, 4gb of ram, 320bg hdd, su7300, bluetooth, rest default.
I debated getting the lower processor but considering how well the su7300 overclocks in the asus laptops I have hope someone figures out how to do it on this one and if I sell it later I can claim it has the fastest available processor.
I'm not usually an early adopter and I'm a little scared of this baby overheating and don't like the fact that the cpu is almost already outdated with no chance of upgrading to anything much better. But I'm heading out of the country in the middle of march for 3-4 weeks and didn't look forward to carrying around my gateway and the battery in my sony lasts less than 30 minutes now. -

and how did you pre-order yours.....?
-
I'ma getting WHITE!!! Wheeeeeeeeee.............
-
$699 at Dell Canada, think I will get in trouble for that
-
Peter Bazooka Notebook Evangelist
Well thought I pre-ordered but now that you mention it I don't have any pending orders...I configured it, put in my info, submitted order, whats up is it not out? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
just found the configuration page
DAM that is a nice set of prices.....now I think I know where my tax return may go! -
pre-ordered mine too wewt! black, su7300, 4gb and bluetooth. i got a wdc 320gb black lying around here somewhere
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
exactly, upgrade your own memory and hard drives for much less
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
$50 from 2 to 4 gigs isn't that bad, 8 gigs is a killer.
-
Hey u think worth it to spend? SU4100 vs SU7300? lol
USD 100 is MYR350 like dat.. thats quite alot.. lol
SU7300 has extra 1MB L2Cache and VT .. hmm -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I agree, I would get the 4 GB
pairing 8GB with that processor is usually going to be a waste anyways -
The main reason I'd want to get SU7300 even though it's not a huge upgrade is hopes for OC'ing.. but I dunno
-
If that's the case I may delay my purchase then.. wait for a full review..
-
Go ahead an go the ENVY route... I have said this before on this thread... on battery the multiplier is locked at 7x which translates to 931mhz. HP knows this... HP designed it this way... buying a Corvette with an Aveo engine! ENJOY!
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I will have to wait for a review regardless
Although I should smarten up some and realize I wont need this by the time I can afford it. It would be great to have for school, but that ends in May for me -
i will still get it once its out in malaysia but argh...im scared that the shipping is way too slow as im going switzerland to futhur my studies by 25 FEB
-
The Asus UL80vt uses the SU7300 and Asus overclocks it themselves so it's very possible to. They do it by like 33% or something so it comes out to ~1.66-1.7ghz. Maybe even 1.8ghz.
-
Talking to the SG rep. Told me they need another freaking week...
-
Alienware didnt mention about overclockable SU7300 that's why ..
-
Same, but am heading south to NZ on the 1st of March. XP
-
anyway how did you all head into the configure page FROM the dell homepage (US/CN/UK)? i tried a couple of times but dell homepage said its yet to launch.
-
Sg rep told me it hasn't launched for Asia Pac yet. Sigh...
-
No, alienware wouldn't do it so someone would have to figure out how. But because Asus overclocks theirs it's very possible to overclock the ones in the M11x.
-
LoL how come? Eh why ur SA is SG? lol.. Im not sure what was mine LoL..
She told me 5th February.. hmm
-
Do we know if its the same chipset as the asus? hopefuly the bios wont block the OC attempts... if its the same chipset as the asus we should have no probs at all, especially with that cooler.
-
Dunno mate, but this is distressing. The rep I got isn't helping much.
-
Not sure, I haven't seen anything about the chipset of the M11x.
-
I know how you feel. I went through two chat reps until I gave up and called. I don't think they really briefed them on the laptop and it's kind of tough when you want to know specifics.
-
Sigh... This is very distressing. The rep just blatantly ignored some of my questions...
-
Did u get whats the base spec price in Malaysia? I heard from someone over at Lowyat.net saying RM3.5k...
-
Thats just a direct conversion of the rumoured $1000 USD max spec model. Harassing the poor rep now.
-
Sigh rep didn't let an ounce of info slip. Probably due to the NS training in singapore... Oh well...
-
gonna call an EPP rep and drill em tomorrow. looking forward to it
