have you guys considered It may be a shot of the laptop from the back rather than the front? and the grills are infact vent ducts rather than speakers?

And the Alienhead is the case alienhead rather than a wallpaper?

we have, and we're fairly sure the lid wouldn't have a touchpad, a keyboard, and a fingerprint reader on it, not to mention spacers to keep the lid's lid from touching the lid. ;)

mingocr83 has a lot to lose by disclosing things he's not allowed to. And trust me, Dell is watching this forum very closely (They're not very happy about me and my blabber mouth last I heard :D )

Ultimately, until Dellienware decides to treat their former employees better and to fully abide by the terms of our separations, I will continue to be a pain in this company's bottom.

And finally, the picture is not from the back, it's very much the front.

sneakyFspy....do you mind me asking why you longer work for Alienware?? did you work in Ireland? where are you going next?....just wondering mate thats all.

Perhaps mingocr83 has been given permission to give us that taster?

Jesus Adam, if you look closely at Rob41 modified picture it definitely shows a touchpad amongst other things....sorry to sound a spiv but I think your the third person to suggest this and its so not the case!

I dont know anything about electronics or cooling but I suspect the back of the laptop will look similar to the M17 and all the other Alienware laptops with big air vents for cooling and a load of connectors and other ports.

Oh there's no doubt about it that picture was cleared for release by the higher-ups. As for your first question, the answer is here:

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2343695,00.asp

I worked in the Athlone call-center up until April 24. I have an interview in Dublin tomorrow for a job in healthcare IT.

And if you're wondering about the terms of the deal that Dellienware is not abiding by, we were all promised that we could order at least one system per person AT COST. All bids and configs were submitted at the time we were terminated.

Almost a month later, we're still waiting on pricing. The king is dead... long live the king.

Maybe I'm restating the obvious but clearly we know now it's a M17x refresh and the all new 15, and 17' platform laptops won't come until late Q4. We know considering it's a refresh it will have an updated design and be fully 280M SLI capable and will not host an i7 considering Qanta nor any other chassis I know of at this moment hosts both an i7 and NVIDIA SLI. That all said an updated M17x (as if it wasn't pretty enough) design with 280m SLI has my money quicker then I can count it lol... Lexus and AW sure know how to keep taking my money by adding unneccesary luxury exterior finishes lol

    Woa,

hold on a minute. I thought I was following these threads pretty well.

nobodieshero, fill me in, how do we know it's a M17X refresh? And how do we know this "refresh" will have the components you cited?

The new "All Powerful" may end up being these things but as far as I know we've seen one leaked photo and have a couple of folks that claim to have valid "inside information".

I see a lot of fun speculation IMO.

Exactly. And assuming nothing that was said before turns out to be true, you can bet people will say, "well, at least I said it was black, remember?" or "I always knew it was wrong"

What exactly do you mean by "all new 15 and 17" platforms?" If you're suggesting Calpella you may want to adjust your prediction to late Q4 2010 seeing as it took AW this long to switch the M17x to Monty.

We'll eventually see a new 15" notebook but that will likely be Monty too.

All I "believe" I know for sure is that the new rig will beat any current 17" laptop A.W. offers.

And since they are now only selling one 17" model, that would be the M17. lol

and hopefully this new laptop works out of the box without stuttering issues and crossfire drops like us m17 owners had to deal with.....i hate how i spent most of my time troubleshooting the m17 rather than play any games....id say about 85% of my time on the m17 was under the hood and software troubleshooting lol....i may just go back to a desktop rig this year.....but this new AW looks so amazing from that pic

That blows that so many of you guys had that stuttering issue. I feel like I dodged a bullet.

I was around 88C on my northbridge till today. I used about the worst thermal paste (Dynex) cause it's all I had, but was able to drop the temps to 78C.

My GPU temps were also reduced. When I get better compound/copper sheet, I'll start over for more improvement.

Thanks Halo and the others that helped with this.

yeah the problem is atleast fixed....the reason u were good Rob is because u have a dual core on steroids....something i should have gone with since this laptop cant handle a quad properly and all the games i play dont use the quad...i would stick to that core2 at 3.55 and never use a quad

That would be awesome if the Skullcap actually looked like how it does in the picture.

    My spec predictions:

    Choice of mobile C2D or C2Q CPU's
    DDR3 1066+
    Twin 7200rpm hard drives
Either CFX HD4870's or SLI GTX280M
    17" WUXGA
    9-10 lb weight w/ battery
    Battery life of 1-1.5 hours

Even if this thing had Mobility 4860s in CrossfireX it would probably beat every 17" out there. I'd kind of want to see them mostly for that reason....as well as for the lower heat and power draw.

Yeah you're probably right. GTX 280M SLI is a little excessive and would probably require an 18.4" chassis. I wonder if CFX HD4870's could work in a 17" chassis. The only laptop that has HD4870X2 is the 18.4" Asus W90.

If they keep the same GPU placement as the M17x and M1730 then unlike the M17/Whitebook each should have it's own fan/heatsink right on top of the card.

Should be able to handle the heat of any two cards just fine.

a number of crazy Clevo M860TU/ETU owners have installed:
    - QX9300
    - GTX 280M

the heat is a bit on the hot side.... so they just undervolted to keep the performance up while the heat down.

Yeah I made a mistake on saying the new platforms would be Q4 of 09, my bad. As far as predicting the components I think this new laptop will use the NVIDIA solution and AW will release the 4870's for the M17. I'm predicting it will not use an i7 because the die needs to be shrunk a good bit more in order to cram both SLI and an i7 in a 17inch laptop, which knowing AW they should be shooting for a 280m SLI 17' as opposed to the somewhat unpopular 18.4'. They would be taking alot of Clevo's market share if they had a 280M SLI laptop in a 17inch. Of course this ALL could be wrong and this turns out to be completely "new" laptop with 4870x2 DDR5, either way I won't be dissapointed but if they claim it to be the "ALLPOWERFUL" I think we all kinda know the 280SLI will beat out a 4870x2, thus all my predictions...

no way the 280 sli will beat out the 4870 ddr5 in xfire

the m17x was just pulled 14 days before the new laptop .... every logical possibility points to the m17x refresh

I'm hoping it will be an Nvidia solution like 280's in SLI so we can loose the CPU dependency.

4870's would be a step up but dual 280's would knock your socks off!

:S I didn't see they removed the M17x off of the site? Guess it is safe to assume it will end being a "refresh". As far as DDR5 4870 > 280M...IDK I'll leave that as our new topic to argue about, I don't think the DDR increase will boost the 4870 so dramatically it will easily beat the 280MSLI, just IMO though.

Every chart I've seen shows the GTX280 getting about 2000 pts more than the 4870 on 3DMark06.

    Seems like two GTX280's>two 4870's.

As far as I know nobody has a 4870 with DDR5 yet so it's hard to compare scores.

It's easy to speculate about the GDDR5 version's performance because its architecture is the same as the desktop HD4870's with 800 SP's. The GDDR5 makes a big difference. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm definitely thinking the HD4870 will be at least as fast as the GTX280M (which is basically a slower clocked 9800GTX).
