well my thread was still the first one! haha
I also have note received my qx9300 yet and as of when I checked last night, unless I am blind, no tracking info showing

What is the status of your order?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Now it says completed....glad you asked so I would check! haha
I got a UPS shipping number! Billing info received yesterday.
NOW I AM HAPPY! -
Congrats scook9.
Now i need to get some paste for it.. lol off to newegg.. -

From what I have used, AS5, OCZ Freeze, Noctua stuff, the OCZ freeze has been best to work with so far. (and Microcenter had like 30 tubes so I grabbed 2 haha)
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
do you have anything to test it on?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the CPU? NOPE haha
-
Yes I am going with the OCZ Freeze. Never used this brand before so worth a shot.
BTW i know it is a matter of opinion. What is your method of applying..
Just the dab in the middle and let the heat sink spread it, spread it evenly with a plastic bag over the finger or thin line across the cpu and let the heat sink spread it?
I personally in the past have just done the rice sized glob in the middle and let the heat sink spread it out..
Just curious. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I let the heatsink spread it, OCZ Freeze is thinner (and wetter?) than AS5 and gives a good even and thin coat
-
Benchmark Review has a great article on thermal pastes (80 brands tested) with tests of different application methods.

Tuniq TX2/3, as well as AS5 and OCZ Freeze would be my recommendations
Dependant on where you are in the world, at least 2 of those 4 are usually available fairly easily. -
Got the proc and it comes with Shin-TsuMicroSi thermal grease (never heard of it). It comes with .3mm of the stuff and the instructions say to use the entire content of the syringe. lol! Maybe it's less than it looks.
-
According to the article that was posted, that is actually the best thermal grease on the market, followed by Arctic Silver 5: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...k=view&id=150&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=13
-
There's different versions of the stuff. I don't know which one this is.
-
There's a few versions of Shin-Etsu MicroSi. If it's the G751 stuff it's better than AS5 since it's got no cure time for it to take full effect. AS5 requires 200 hours before it's at peak performance.
-
It doesn't say, it just says Shin-Etsu MicroSi on the syringe, no other info that I can tell.
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Thats one of the reasons I like Tuniq TX-2, cheaper, zero curing time, and its about as capable as AS5 anwyay. -
Well the proc is in. I used OCZ freeze.
-
Good enough? Pack it up and send it to you?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
that's perfect for me
-
How far do you think I can push it before the BSODs start?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
i don't know, we have to find out. keep pushing it....
what did you do just raise the fsb? -
yes w/ 1:2 divider. It reads as 3.2Ghz in the BIOS.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
because it's 3.16, it rounds up to 3.2ghz. (i don't i need to explain that in detail right?
)
push it higher -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Pffttt, you have an unlocked processor, if you can multi-clock, use it, you might be able to get several hundred more Mhz out of the chip itself, even if you find the chipset/RAMs boundary!
-
Stability is based on the fsb:mem divider. I'm still trying to find the perfect combo.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
and let us know what the best setting and what it bluescreens at.
-
BSOD at 340 bus so that's an FSB of 1360 = 3.23Ghz @ default multiplier. Need to test more...
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Actually, in a multi-unlocked chip its not; the key thing there is chip potential and volts applied (and cooling); a processors multiplier is an internal component in the CPU, and doesn't affect your RAM or NB in any way, just the chip itself. <noting that multipliers themselves can also be unstable, and not happily be run higher even when unlocked; they're as fallible as any other part of the CPU>
This is why Im suggesting to use it; by upping your multiplier; you are directly increasing the clocks your CPU will produce in direct corellation to FSB bus; your limitation with the multiplier is the chip itself and voltage; nothing more.
Once you've found the max stable multiplier, then you can move on to FSB tweaking.
Most chips aren't multi-unlocked upwards; only downwards, which is why most people dont bother with it!
FSB*Multiplier = Core Mhz
As an example on my old Q6600 I tended to use 400x8 to hit 3.2 Ghz as I got the added benefit of RAM overclock out of it; I could have reached the same clock by going 9x356 though.
If you can find a stable higher multiplier; then you can push the core clocks higher; whilst utilising lower FSB/RAM speed combos, putting you less at risk of hitting that NB/RAM stability wall. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
ok i like. we need to put important information like this somewhere.
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
That's not too bad, now you can pull back and try using your knowlege of what FSB regions work, whilst upping the multi to directly improve your core clocks in relation to the FSB
.

Not quite sure what I'll be able to add to the topic really that isn't being discussed by yourself; from what I can see thats a completely seperate topic regarding FSB/RAM dividers; and RAM timings, unlocked multipliers are something completely different, and I've never mentioned RAM dividers or timings at all, it'd be taking the subject off on a bit of a tangent.
-
It still relates because the point of it is greater stability in OC'ing. My x9100 hates it when I change the multiplier. I'm trying it out with the qx9300 right now. 10 x 312.5 right now keeping my memory divider at 1:2 with these tests.
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Ah fair enough, multipliers can be a little funny like that; unfortunately they're just as fallible as any other part of the chip; and some chips do just not like other multipliers beyond the defaults; that really is chip dependant! The reason I mentioned it at all, was for the simple reason that you may be able to use a higher multiplier on an unlocked chip; to generate higher core clocks; however sounds like the multiplier wasn't very flexible on your X9100, and simply didn't like anything beyond the basics, all part of the fun of clocking really, and always worth a shot on an unlocked chip
Im presuming your X9100 began failing stability tests as soon as your multiplier was changed? -
Yes in the 3.5Ghz range.
I have the qx9300 running at 10 x 325 right now....still pushing. -
I'm moving the convo to the benchmarks thread since I just started some testing.
-
Well funny just saw these and decided to try and order since they don't charge the CC till shipping! lol. Same original price. says backordered still but hey I'll wait 2-3 weeks for it....

Megacharge Custom User Title
Unfortunately for us Canadians HP is charging us 687.00 Canadian for it, which is much more than the exchange conversion, but I guess it's still cheaper than getting it from anyone else. After getting a Q9200 QAVR for 225 USD I wont be needing one of these any time soon, unless my Q9200 doesn't like being OC'ed.
-
hum qx9300 is $1000+ in case you havent noticed.
-

Umm yeah I guess you didn't read my post properly, or maybe you didn't understand it, I said "it's still cheaper than getting it from anyone else" I was talking about the 687.00 price tag for Canadians, I know how much QX9300's go for. lol -
hehe true true still worth it though in the long run
-

No doubt... You Americans are getting a sweet deal for OEM at just over 5 bills, can't beat that.
-
Just confirmed mine will be here on 8/11
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
mine comes tomorrow
-
got tracking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
so it's true.
i hope it last for at least another 2-3 months.
-
It's definitely true. I'm using mine.
-
Just out of curiosity....what's the performance increase from, say, a q9000? Minus the obvious overclocking benefits, is the speed increase (which seems sort of small for that big of a step up) as noticeable as a large increase on a dual-core because it's a quad? Or am I just rambling nonsense?
-
rambling nonsense...j/k
It's double the cache, a higher native frequency and has the extra OC capabilities. You should see a difference.
The dual core vs quad core question really depends on whatever current app you are using.
