Response PM just received (and replied to).![]()
I'm writing this just to let everyone know that the Orion backpack seems to have been removed from the UK configurator; I checked and it's still there on the US configurator.
May be a glitch of the UK configurator or maybe a supply problem. Let's see how it turns out.

Already received (and replied to) an email from Stevie's rep. Things are moving incredibly fast
Especialy after months waiting to save up enough for this moment.

Waiting for a final confirmation before I go to the bank to make the payment.
(Hopefully I'm not annoying anyone with these real time updates)

Actually, I'm in a bit of a seconds-counting-mode now, as my bank is only open for an hour in the afternoon, and closes in about 45 minutes.
I hope that the rep answers before the bank closes, otherwise I'll have to wait till monday (and possibly take an hour off work to do it).
Andrea.
Going to the bank now -

I will see if I can give him a nudge for you......
-
Murphy's law in action: I went to the bank (just as it was closing), but the employee said I need the SWIFT code (a.k.a. BIC code) for an international transfer.
As far as I know, this is not needed for national transfers, and that's probably why your rep didn't provide it. But as I'm from abroad...
Now the bank is closed for the weekend, so I'll have to wait till monday morning to pay. Oh well...
Andrea. -

That's a bit of a pain. I hope that you can proceed ASAP. Sounds like you arranged a good deal anyway so that's the "hard part" over and done with.
-
Already got the data I needed, but, as I said, the bank is now closed. Everything on hold till monday.
As far as the deal goes, well I saved quite a bit, even though not as much as I had hoped. But given that I chose the basic configuration as far as the "high margin optons" go (RAM, HDD, accessories, software, additonal services), that was to be expected. I'll report some figures when everything is finished.

Cool. Let me know via PM. Have a great weekend mate.
-
Thank you, have a great weekend you too
I'll report here when everything is done.
Oh, almost forgot: it seems that the Orion backpack is not available now, and your (should I say "our" now?) rep suggested me to purchase a backpack locally. Once I get the laptop I'll surely get an appropriate backpack, possibly ordering it when I get the italian keyboard (the IT keyboard is not among the available options for the m18x r2, but the m17x r4 keyboard fits the m18x r2, and the m17x r4 IS sold in italy with an IT keyboard, so...).
Also, it's possible to order the PSU with different power cords than the standard UK one, but that incurs an extra charge. So I ordered the standard UK cord and I'll initially use it with a round to UK plug adapter that I have, before I get an appropriate cable.

While some might contend that reps can offer very high discounts, you will have to be configuring extremely expensive systems to enjoy such deals. For those in the UK who are looking for an Alienware with a limited budget, allow me to humbly present.. Quidco
Register for a Quidco account and go to the Dell section. There is usually a coupon code for "10% off everything" that's about to expire. Don't worry, a new one will respawn after a few days of hiatus. In addition, the cash-back rates for Alienware fluctuates but can get as high as 6%. So just wait for the opportune moment when a coupon is available and the cash-back is at the highest and you can enjoy an effective discount of 16% simply by ordering online, even for a basic-specs M11x.
Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with Quidco. My Alienware was bought through a rep (though I wish I had known better back then) and my first ever cash back from Quidco is still being processed. Cash back can take months so it's not for the impatient. -
Quick update: went to the bank yesterday and initiated the transfer. They said they'll send me the receipt today by e-mail. After forwarding it to the rep, the order should be ready to go (at last).

Obviously the bank employee forgot to e-mail me the receipt yesterday. I went there earlier today and got the receipt, which I already sent to the rep. Got the order Acknowledgment in the mail.

I'll keep you updated. Wait x2 in my case (Dell to forwarding company + forwarding company to me)
By the way, as I didn't get the backpack (it was unavailable) and only got the tactX mouse as an accessory, I assume that the number of parcels sent by Dell would still be 2, one for the accessories (the mouse) and one for the laptop. Do you think this is correct?
Again, I ask because I'd like to instruct the forwarding company to consolidate all of the parcels, so it'd be better being able to tell them how many parcels are there in total.
Best regards,
Andrea. -
Hey steviejones, I had asked you earlier about getting a good deal if I was ordering from Germany. You told me that you were unsure about it and you could only help for orders shipping within the UK. I just wanted to ask you again since fmzambon ordered from Italy if I could also get a discount ?
-
If you plan on using a parcel forwarding service, as I am doing, that should not be a problem.
Just beware of a thing: as far as I know the accidental damage cover is not valid outside of the purchase country (whereas the regular warranty can be transferred to another country).
I'll let you all know how it turns out with the forwarding service I chose once they get to do their part (still a couple of weeks before that).
EDIT: as far as the deal goes, I chose a m18x r2 with a 3920xm and dual 680M SLI, plus the 3 year warranty and a tactX mouse. The rest is all pretty much base spec, as I plan on upgrading it later on. With this configuration I got a tad more than 10% discount, but remember that I had very little heavily discountable items, such as RAM, Hard disk, other accessories and so on.
All this to say that the discount can vary by a great amount also depending on the configuration. Don't assume that an m17x or m18x will automatically get you a heavy discount.
Hope this helps,
Andrea. -

Btw if i buy also a monitor from USA will it work as well in UK?
I heard that "Most computer power supplies have a voltage switch. Switch to the higher voltage and get a new power cord so you have one with the right plug for a UK outlet. " <--- Does the US alienware has any 110/220 V switch so i can use it in UK just changin the power cord? -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
As for the monitor, I don't know which monitor you are looking at but here is a link to the AW2310 OptX Manual, which states that the electrical input which is 100 to 240 VAC/50 or 60 Hz + 3 Hz/1.5 A (Max.). The monitor should have circuitry to "detect" the relevant power source and apply it correctly. All you would require would be a US to UK Travel adapter. Alternatively, as the power lead isn't "wired" to the monitor permanently, you could elect to purchase a standard UK 3 pin power/kettle lead. Same principal applies to the laptop - a US machine will ship with a US 2 pin plug which you can either change to a UK lead or use the US lead with an adapter....the PSU/power pack will do the voltage conversions.
Bear in mind that standard UK Customs fees will still apply and as a monitor is a very heavy item, check out costings from BundleBox or the like to see how much they will charge you to get it here - chances are that any savings to be had may well be deemed pointless but have a look if you like. -
PM with my details should be in your box.
I would like to know, can I get some sort of "bonuses" or a discount purchasing it as a UK Student? -

Well... I was a bit disappointed, as I was offered a 0% difference from what I can buy directly from a website using -10% discount code and free delivery...
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
I'm sorry you feel that way. As I have mentioned in the past, my rep does not have the ability to "combine" the discounts and discount really does depend on the profit margin for Dell.....if you configure a machine WITHOUT the elements that Dell make most money on (upgraded memory, hdd etc) then the profit is smaller and thus less discount can be offered.
Maybe you should try asking for a deal sweetener, such as maybe a backpack or external KB etc.... -
Just an update as it's quite quiet in here: my m18x r2 should arrive in a couple of days.
In case someone else is interested, I used forward2me as a forwarding service to have the laptop shipped to Italy. I got the notification by the Dell rep that my system had shipped on friday the 7th, then on tuesday the 11th I got a notification that it was at the forwarding company warehouse. After a few emails with them to discuss the shipping options (I chose DHL ground shipping, as it still has a tracking number and couriers are slow regardless here in Italy, so no need to pay more to save a couple of days at most), it was re-shipped on wednesday the 12th.
In my opinion it's a very good service, with prompt communication and good pricing. Bear in mind that they ship with DHL, so it may not be cost effective with small and cheap online orders, but laptop purchases are no problem. They also do insured shipments (which I used), charging 2.5% of the goods value.
Hope that someone finds this useful,
Andrea. -
Hey Stevie,
Quick question. I'll be buying from your rep soon, hopefully. I'll be buying from Ireland which I remember you saying can be done. My only worry is about the warranty. Will it transfer to Ireland? If I order accidental damage cover etc will the warranty be valid in Ireland? Will I still get the NBD in home service?
Thanks. -

Actually, I have been to an international conference in the last two days ( 12th IEEE International Working Conference on Source Code Analysis and Manipulation - Home) as a speaker. I brought the new m18x with me, and, among many Macbooks and other various netbooks, it attracted quite a bit of attention (I mean, positive attention). And it worked perfectly.
So all I can say is that I could not be more satisfied than this. Thank you very much steviejones133 for signalling your great rep.

That's great news, Andrea. I'm glad that you finally got your hands on the beast and that it works 100%. I can imagine the faces of the crApple owners upon seeing your new machine - that would have been quite fun to see their reaction! Glad my rep was able to help you out and everything has worked out good! Happy computing!
Oh, and on a side note for anyone looking to order soon.....my rep has confirmed with me Today that he can manually place orders with Intel's new cpu refresh. Those cpu's would be 3940xm, 3840qm, 3740qm and 3630qm. Enjoy if you are about to buy! -
Hello,
Any news when they will replace the old CPUs with the new ones?) -

Hello everyone,
I am planning to buy m17x r4 tomorrow! Yay!
Just waiting for a letter from REP to know if he can add some extras, such as a backpack and a better warranty to what I have in my dell's basket.
If no... well... I will just buy it directly from dell.co.uk -

I've spoken to your rep though, but this is as far as I can get right now since it's already showing a big red negative margin on their screen.
I think I've just pulled the best Alienware deal ever in UK
