Two 256GB SSDs? Thou art forsaken.

    480GB mSATA boot drive
    960GB storage drive
    2x 1TB storage/backup drives
1.5TB backup drive (for SSDs) in optical bay.

THAT is how you max out storage. :)

I have a 10tb NAS. I'll take the 2lb reduced weight and 3-4 degrees reduced heat vs having those in my 'portable' monster.

Maybe I'll do 2x 512gb SSDs, but I'm not sure yet how much money I directly have to play with.

Point taken. I have something similar, and (with whatever laptop I end up with this Summer) I'll probably just be going with a 250/500GB 840, and that'll be it.

Any reason for RAID SSDs? Do you really need ~900MB/s?

Why does that matter? I see this all of the time... If he wants to RAID, so be it. Don't go around the forum policing people trying to figure out why they do what they do. Frankly, it's none of your business.

We shouldn't have to explain ourselves to you. :p

I'm not sure whether that was meant jokingly or if you're serious. If it's the latter, you can kindly go to hell. If it's the former, I'm simply curious. I don't know of many situations that require that sort of bandwidth, therefore he's doing something interesting, so I'd like to know what it is. I in no way "policed" him. I simply asked a question. The last time I checked, that was not frowned upon in a forum. Backseat moderating however, is.

I want to have 32gb of RAM so I can make half of it into a RAM drive.

So, yes, I figure I like and need speed. Not for gaming, but for professional applications.

Also, why are you two so serious? Calm it.

I use my ~900MBs for media file archiving editing, sampling, and copying parsing etc etc, move ~4-9GB files at same time or simultaneously more smaller files (100's MBs etc) at higher load using RAID0-SSD helps and gives a world of difference comparing to single SSD, take that about 100% faster VS 1xSSD. If you were so curious

we are here to talk about the hardware, not why we need it [ maybe ]. if u ppl start asking why do u need an alienware instead of benchmarking it, then this forum is going down.

now i need to go and ask a few Q's in the m17x r4 forum, chilll out

Nah, the M17x uses a dual-pipe heat sink and XM CPU's need triple-pipe heat sinks. From what I remember, the triple-pipe won't fit, but it might. Maybe someone can confirm. ;)

It's possible to throw the XM in, though. If you don't mind throttling.

No problem, brotha. You never know about the R5, though. Perhaps they will offer the XM CPU option. However, if they do keep the M18x (which it seems they will), it most likely won't be offered... :(

    Only time can tell.

Hmm, I still don't know whether or not I should keep or cancel my $1730 680m M17x or not. New M17x R5 with 780m only looks to get probably ~30% GPU performance gain over the 680m, and I'm certain it's going to run at least $2,300-2,500 pre-tax. Way too hard to decide. My order got delayed til 6/10 so they gave me a $100 rebate from Costco. From the looks of the discussion, it seems to be Haswell is not a big performance gain either aside from battery life (unless anyone can enlighten me on the matter). Anyone have a clue what the R5 chassis will be made of? I'll surely switch if its aluminum.

Actually, 6/10 is when E3 takes place and Alienware plans to announce the new line of systems. If the R5 is worth it, return the R4. You've got 30 days to decide.

Or you can avoid the hassle and just cancel...

What you were actually doing is demanding attention by posting so frequently and with caps, for your question which I was able to easily predict with a 5 second Google search regarding if the XM CPUs were available in the R4. Unfortunately for you, we/I do not know the future and cannot 100% accurately answer your question.

I apologize for being snippy, but it is fairly poor forum etiquette to demand attention in such a way.

    But mooooooooooom. Fiiiiiiiine.

Exactly as J.Dre said, you can always return the computer if there are major innovations to the R5 that you'd like to take advantage of.

With the unlocked bios I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have a problem overclocking a 3920xm or 3940xm in an M17x r4. Controlling temps for a high overclock like the M18x is a whole other matter though.

the current alienware look has matured in past 6 years to what it is now, and in few weeks-months we will see all new design, and I doubt it will be as solid looking as are models looking today... to me seeing new design already looks like comparing Classic Magnum44 (current design) to some weapons from ToyStory, just need alot of time for new design to grow on me at least, I dunno how about the others. Im oldschool

I suppose it would be worthwhile looking at past leaks of the M18xR1 and seeing how they compared to the final design. If leaks in the past have always turned out to be inaccurate or not reflective of final design then we could assume there is a fair chance the leaks we have seen now will be inaccurate of the final design of the 2013 lineup.

Sure, this was the leak for the M18xR1 and M14xR1
Notice how the lid on the M18xR1 is different to the final design; it is missing the plastic grip and angled design (it's just flat).

Hmm, not sure I see the wisdom behind that...

ahh I appreciate the photo posting the design changes were slight if the leaks are accurate we might have a general idea

my logic behind the mis directional leak thought was possibly make a bigger impact at the reveal or another train of thought would be gauge AW fans reactions to the new designs?

    No problem.
I would have thought getting the right first impression is more important. Aside from competitors stealing ideas from leaks, you wouldn't want your customers to get the wrong first impression by viewing a leaked, unfinished product.

Geforce 700 series (high-end cards) announced. Check Geforce.com for the article.

Of course, this is completely meaningless, as no Alienware products use Geforce 700 series cards. Dunno why I bothered bringing this up really...

I personally like AnandTech's article better, as they show the 600 series specifications too. So the 780m has 1536 CUDA cores, vs the 680m's 1344, and runs at 823 mhz instead of 720. Oh, and 4gb GDDR5 standard, apparently.

i think it was AWs way of shifting soon to be "obsolete" stock ;-) didn't even have to make an official announcement* or decrease price. genius.

    * is that japanese poster, AWs usual "style" in terms of design? could it be fan made?

Commonly, many iterations of advertising material are thought up and sometimes previewed before they create the final set. This seems to be something internal that the site managed to get its hands on, likely from an internal leak. I doubt we'll be seeing any larger promotional images until the full announcement at E3, but I wouldn't put another leak out of the question, and I'm certainly hoping for one.

What I have learned, if anything from my experiences with the salesman: they'll tell you what you want to hear, whether it's true or not. I wouldn't rely on them. I've been told I will get calls and I never do. I also received a call on the 29th and was told my desktop would arrive today (5/31). However, the next morning when I awoke, I checked my email and my order was delayed another week - they literally lied to my face.

Just be patient and wait another week or two to see for yourself. Alienware should begin selling soon.
