I am configuring mine now online and need help on the smart bay. If i put the smart bay as none, can I put my own HDD in it or do I need to buy the HDD from alienware. What type of connection are they using for the smart bay?

So, all these reports of units shipping... are they all 1400x900 display units? Has anyone received a 1920x1200 yet with a 8800 in it?

I have been in Phase 4 almost since I ordered mine back on Jan. 24. I am a patient man, and figure I am still weeks away from getting it. (although if someone has also ordered a 1920 res'd 8800 just before me and has gotten it, i would be happy to hear...).

The only question I can answer is 2 (I haven't been alone enough to try 1 ;) ) and I would say this keyboard feels like something off a Dell lappy (that said, I don't know what an IBM board is like). The keys do make a sound but I would say a very muted sound (comparable to a MacBook Pro)

Thanks GRB. That is consider a silent keyboard. Mac have one of the best keyboards. IMO the best keyboards are from IBM. Anyway thanks for the info.

I will be slightly pissed too if I don;t get the side lights, I mean this is a gaming machine and sometimes I want to pimp it out and say Hey look I got a freakin great gaming laptop form Alienware, and sometimes i want the lights off and not draw any attention, but I want that choice. It is really bad on Alienware's part to not make this perfectly clear on their website, and to let people believe they are getting something they aren't. I will def go after them for some money or another year's warranty. In fact if all of us call and get angry maybe they will listen and do something for us.

Just curious if anyone can comment on the Notebook sleeve that comes with it... is it anything special or just a piece of very thin cloth?

Alienware reps really know Nada! I called this morning about my laptop showing shipped on the website but no information about shipping numbers etc. They said they would have tracking numbers later today and to call back. I also mentioned there was an error in the address and they put me forward to shipping who said unfort the package was due to be shipped today so they could not make the change. Well guess what.. it arrived this morning at my parents house already! the same day Alienware said it was due to ship. Geesh they really do not know what is going on. Just got to get to my parents now and pick the baby up!

GRB mine is a 8800er as well. I will look once I get it if I can see a lighting track or translucent line or something where there could be light. Man they really need to give each sales rep a F.A.Q. sheet for each notebook they sell with all this info so they can get their stories straight.

agreed...i really dont know why they did not put it in there...apart from saving money. i looked at the lid , but the light tracks seem to be coming from beneath the case...unless , like the track pad and touch controls, there is a transparent part in the paint (on the plastic). If that is the case, they probably didnt put the light track in because they had some remarks about the transparent gap surrounding the monitor when no lights were used(something i do not see on my monitor as it is painted grey like the rest of the case) ...something to consider i guess

keep us informed if you get some extended warranty or explanation from alienware (from the false ces 2008 show)

the monitor lights are not the same as the other touch control lights. you can't notice them at all unless they're on.

they sell toslink cables that are stereo mini on one side and standard optical on the other, get one of those. idk what that monster thing does, you need to look at the tip, the optical ones have the little window on them.

wow I didint think the side light issue thing would upset so much people. I admit I would have liked them (even if they would have been off 99% of the time) but its definatly not something that would stop me from buying the product.

On a side note the laptop itself is very nice the thing I was the most worried about was the screen but Im very happy with it. I had never used a widescreen and a glossy screen too and I really like the change. 1440x900 is awsome for 3dsmax, even better then my old 19" 1280x1024 lcd. I still wonder what 1920 x 1200 looks like but I guess Ill just buy a 24" lcd with the money I saved when they get to a reasonable price.

I agree with Absinthe. I am going to be LIVID if I do not get the case lights. I could easily walk into Bestbuy or Circuit City and buy a new laptop. I choose Alienware because of the unique customization. When you have an Alienware, everyone knows you have one. If it is a battery issue, (if thats REALLY true) thats OUR choice as owners to make NOT theirs. When I lay down 3500.00 for all bells and whistles, thats exactly what I want.

@mrwater: I gave you an advise to make HDMI audio work, have you read that? are you using also a 1.3 hdmi-hdmi cable?

@hemlok, can you run 3dmark06 @1280x1024, so we can compare a standard score?

    thanks to all ;)

Absinthe42, I admire that you are passionate about pursuing this, so best of luck to you. Personally the side lights aren't a deal breaker for me... but just past friday i modified my order when i realized that they forgot the keyboard lighting. Some may argue that the sidelights aren't nearly as important as the keyboard illumination, or even that the keyboard illumination isn't necessary. It was clearly worth it enough to me to have my laptop delayed another 48 hours to have keyboard illumination added to the order, so for that I (somewhat) see where you're coming from.

You'll get the attention of someone higher up if you keep at this, this i'm sure of. G/luck to you!

Hi Guys, Just ordered the M15X @ the UK branch - MAX ON ALL :)

Damm US wannabe companies - they follow rules like monkeys. Name Rank and Serial no. that's all they can say - if I never hear the words "Company Policy" again it will be to soon :)

BWT the LID lights are on the European pile. Not that I give a sh*t - but just funny that they can't get in the US.

Let's see what this gadget from China can do - ETA 30 days.

the camera- you have to peel off the protection sticker if it's there and do FN+F9 to disable/enable the camera. for some stupid reason the crappy cam program they give you doesn't pick up the camera 100% of the time, although the camera does work.

I have tried everything already, and posted that I was indeed using 1.3 HDMI (for both my tv and cable).

The HDMI does not carry audio in this case. The sound settings menu doesnt give you an option to put it on the HDMI, the only digital audio device is the mini stereo jack that can accept toslinks.

Just one silly question since there has been so much talk about the video out thing. All my laptops until now had the standard vga output so I have no idea how the others work. What would you need as adaptor to connect the m15x to a standard vga port (monitor or projector). I should get one of those since I use the laptop also to give presentations and stuff and our projectors are kinda normal (old) so they have only the vga conection (i think).

This may have been you on Alienware's support page, mrwater...if so, I apologize...

    Thank you for your inquiry

In order to properly route the audio through the HDMI port of your Area-51 m15x mobile system please follow the next procedure:

    1. Open the Realtek audio application.

    2. With the HDMI connected to the system select the tab listed as Digital Output.

    3. Right-click on the Digital Output tab.

    4. Click on Set default audio.

    5. Confirm that the volume is raised on the output device connected to the HDMI port.

Audio should now be heard from the output device.

    Thank you for your inquiry,

    The Alienware Technical Support Team

And Alienware says it won't work with the X3100:

    Thank you for your inquiry

The HDMI output is not supported by the integrated graphics mode (UMA mode) of your Area-51 m15x system. Please utilize the discreet graphics card for HDMI support.

    Thank you for your inquiry,

    The Alienware Technical Support Team

    Will not work...

HDMI can be readily converted to DVI-D/I since both are digital signals...you just need to change the pin-out and ignore the audio pins...

VGA is analog, and you will not find an HDMI-to-VGA adapter...
