I may have mistyped. I didn't mean it isn't physically playable, I just mean that it will not be with acceptable framerates. SLI will probably struggle as well. Gamespot did a test for CPU performance and found that there is not even ONE FPS difference between older AMD x2 processors and the latest intel C2Q and C2Ds. I can probably drum up the link. This game does not benefit from the extra CPU power and will be completely GPU limited. Older games like CS:S, HL2 and some of the RTS games that are more CPU limited will give a few better frames though. Unfortunately because the CPU's of today are so strong, there is no problem running 20-30FPS in crysis, its the GPU that is preventing it from going any higher. The CPU's can probably run 60FPS easily. Also there was NO difference between running 2 cores to 4 cores. The only difference was seen between 1 and 2 cores.

Notice the 1600 by 1200 settings; there is no FPS difference from a C2D 1.83 to a c2d 2.93Ghz. This will be less apparent the higher in resolution you go. At 1024 by 768 with medium quality you can see a difference but we are all trying to play higher. It appears that we will be lucky to play at 1440 by 900 at high quality as some report. I still have reservations about that but hopefully I am wrong because I ordered my system with crysis in hopes that it will play at 1440 by 900 on HIGH.

 

I can't run Crysis playably on very high with my desktop (with the 8800 GTX 768mb desktop card) so I wouldn't expect to be able to do so on the m15x.

High to very high is a pretty big jump.. It runs high without any slowdowns, but everything on very high kills it. I've only ever seen it done with 8800 Ultras in triple-SLI.

Actually DX10 Very High cuts the framerates you'd get with High in half. If you want the game to look better than DX9 High (though less than true DX10 Very High) and have a small performance decrase you should Google the DX9 Very High crack. You still don't get the true eye candy that makes Very High so impressive, but it looks better than High. Very High should run decently in DX10 with the Crysis 1.1 patch, updated video card drivers, at 1280x800 or 1024x768 if you want a really smooth experience. DX10 Very High at 1024x768 should look better than DX9 High at 1440x900.

 

More than in half.. I get maybe a third the performance. On my desktop, it goes from perfectly smooth at all times to unplayable (slideshow) at all times.

 

hey how are the ozma headphones? i just ordered the 5 series.

 

I won't get them until the end of February, but I would cancel the order on the 5 series and get the 7 if I were you. The S-Logic technologhy (surround sound through your headphones that feels "detatched") and bass responce on the Ozma 7 sound really impressive and fared really well with critics. If you want I could do a mini-review when I get them.

Dell has the Ozma 7 headphones on sale for $160, which is notably less than what Alienware charges for them.

I'm only getting the Ozma 7 because of the unique S-Logic rechnology and high-end quality. The Ozma 5 should sound as good as headphones that cost half as less, and headphones that cost as much should sound better. I'm sure they're great headphones, but you could do better for that price.

What I mean is there's nothing unique about the Ozma 5 to justify it's price. You're better off with different headphones in the $100 price range.

 

Hello All,

I am considering the alienware m17x vs a competitor, but I want to clear something up about the lack of a lid latch. I have heard rumors that the lid is held shut via a magnet similar to the mac books, is this true? I am just concerned that over time the lid hinge will wear down and at some point the lid will not close flushly, and may even open inadvertantly during transport. All help is greatly appreciated.

whats the problem if the main battery discherges first??
if you stormed your brain properly ,, you can think of powering the laptop with the main battery detached while the SBB attached . Hope this worx

 

yes, I think it will work, but I'd rather not to put off the main battery

btw, the fact is: if the SBB discharge first, you should be able to change it, when the first SBB is completely off and the main one is full! you can do this again & again. I think it would be clever! not clever if the main one discharge first

You are absolutely right! I just did a bit of research on intels site and the old core 2 Duos (not the penryns) only come with max of 4 mb of cache . The ones now showing on alienware site ALL have 6 mb cache meaning that they are the penryns because they are the only intel mobile processors with the 6 mb cache.

 

Nice! I guess I will get the X9000!!.. now its a matter of when the black case its coming out.... Hopefully, soon!

 

Hey, I've been lurking around for a few days now, as my Powerbook g4 died.

I'm down to the M15X and a macbook pro.

I'm curious if there are any known issues with the M15X as of right now? Also, how many of you are running 64bit Vista???


Any details would be great, so I can make my decision!

The funny thing is, I made several changes, including to the Penryn pros. to my m15x. It would be great if they release the black case before my comp ships out so I can make yet anotehr change to the black case... Time will tell.

I think you're absolutely ridiculous. This is the most powerful 15 inch notebook. This gaming notebook is a couple of pounds lighter than any other gaming notebook. If you want a gaming notebook to take with you on the road.... This is the only option. The m1730 is ridiculous and the power brick alone is 2+ pounds. You got EXACTLY what alienwear advertised - The smallest and the fastest 15' notebook. How you could possibly say this notebook is bulky is absolutely hilarious. Please return your AW and go for something else. You seem like the person who would complain about anything they purchase....

 

Anyways - I was deciding on what notebook to purchase... the m1730 with dual 8800 gtx's or the m15x. I splurged on the m15x(8800gtx) - Mine should be coming early March. LEET. Hopefully I get it before I go away to aspen :d.

Yea - It also would have been nice to have the option for black... but I couldn't wait.

Radenren you should call up Alienware and see if your estimated ship date is march 7th. When i ordered mine the ship date said march 7th, but now the guy on the phone is saying march 14th. - You should call up and check ;p

WTF! there is something weird going on with my package, it left orlando on the 20 at 130 am. they said it would be here no later than today, now they have no idea where it is, and keep giving me different answers. This is sooo not cool.

 

hey i called up AW after i read akami's post, they said mine is on schedule so far, n will ship out on the 6th, which a day faster than originally the 7th... well, lets hope so..

Abs the reason they told you the 25th is because Fedex ground doesn't deliver on Saturdays. I believe you had said that it was suppose to arrive on the 23rd

 

check your tracking if its actually parked in a fedex building close to you, give a call and see if you can just pick it up.

 

That won't work either this late in the game. Looks like it will be Monday till you receive it. If you call now, Fedex will tell you that they need 24 hours to process the order and sometimes they will tell you that they have to make 1 delivery attempt.

 

No they deliver on sat. They will be closed on mon though. i called alienware, they called them, and got a different answer. So as Isaid, there is something fishy going on. I also called the fedex close to me, they told me to come down there this morning, I get there, they act like im crazy, and tell me that, it wont be here till Tuesday.
When I called Alienware, the lady told me that she will put a hold ship on it so I could get it asap. But currently like I said earlier, everyone, including alienware, are getting different answers.

 

This crap is why I always pick two day. Ground takes too long and gets screwed up too easily.

Bluh. I wish they would deliver my laptop already. It shipped on the 19th and I guess it's not going to be delivered until this Tuesday.

I did, but as I say I suspect they may have upgraded me to priority shipping as a way to make up for the delays they had with the initial shipment of m15xes

 

This is my first official post on here, its essentially a letter of complaint but I feel it is warranted(and I thought a few people might be able to appreciate it). I don't mean to go on a Dennis Miller style rant here but I think I'm going to so don't read further if you don't want to hear it lol.

I believe I am having some pretty hard luck on my delivery compared to some others. I ordered my M15X on Jan 13th and it was expected to ship on Feb 4th. Long story short, it STILL hasn't arrived or shipped!!!!

I paid in full using Visa($4005.xx) and my order was moved to stage 4 within 2 days. At the time I thought "great, these guys don't mess around... my order is already progressing". Little did I know my order would stay at Phase 4 for nearly 4 weeks.
In that time I contacted Alienware several times by phone and email and was told several different answers. Initially I was told my smart bay battery was back-ordered and would be shipped separately. This mildly annoyed me because I was on the pre-order list and the site didn't mention anything about delays with that item, however I could live with that.

After calling many times I was told "your order is on schedule and should be shipped on the 4h as expected" then when the 4th came I was told my keyboard was back ordered, another time it was the monitor(the standard, not the upgrade). Then last Thursday I dealt with a guy(Armando) who seemed to genuinely want to help. He told me they were sorry for the bad experience I've received and my order would be top priority and would be "rushed" blah blah blah...
I don't know if it was coincidence but my order was built and progressed to stage 6 by last Friday. So I once again thought things were progressing along...nope. This whole past week has past and I contacted them again 3 times (2 times speaking to Virgillio, working on "behalf of the CEO" through [email protected] ) and was still not given a direct answer. I got the same line "we're sorry and we'll rush your order..."
The WORST part of all this is I would just cancel my order but
1) The CAN / US exchange rate would cause me to lose $200 and
2) This is the only 15" laptop out there with this kind of power so I'm completely screwed.

One more kick in the teeth is the fact that the "delayed" smart bay batter just arrived on Friday all by itself. So my initial annoyance with the delay turned out to be a twist of irony that I never expected. So at least I've got a nice battery to play with but no computer to use it with :cry:


As a side note - after doing a little investigating it seems that Alienware doesn't even handle most of their own customer service. They outsource it out to a company called "Right Now" who does generic customer service for many industries and companies. ( http://www.rightnow.com/)

So my thoughts are: "of course you're never going to get a proper answer, or compensation for delayed orders or anything because they don't have the authority or information to do anything."
They can't even call the guy building/testing the system and ask how its progressing from what I understand. They simply pull an answer out of the sky and tell you anything to get you off the phone. So how can they tell me they'll put a "rush" on my order? That would mean they'd need to actually get off their @$$, contact Alienware and actually follow up on something and pressure someone. Why would they bother if a simple "we're sorry we'll do our best" will get you off the phone?
I don't know but I can't see a company like Alienware surviving for a long time without some major restructuring or change in the way things are organized. I am beyond frustrated at this point and I haven't even scratched the surface of the list of incidents I've had with these guys. I just hope that nobody else has to experience the kind of b.s that I've had to.

i dont know guys i ordered this thing. but at any time they could come out with the sexy black/skull cap or the 17". i feel like im waiting in ancipation, yet i would not mind waiting longer if i could change it to black or 17" how much more would i pay for the 2" , and perhaps sli gtx?
