@Velacio you want something above the Protective cloth sleeve that comes with the m15x? Might i suggest a laptop backpack? they usually come padded and are easier to find from what i seen here in hawaii then a protective sleeve for a laptop. Not to mention more variety too.

Yeah well I guess I should wait to see how sturdy the protective cloth sleeve is b/c a mac i had a while back came with one but it didnt last long. I was looking at something from here http://www.becase.com/ but they are from UK and are quite pricey

Also Velacio check an apple store they have funky simple sleeves that may just fit.. possibly a bit tight becase the 15x is about .3" thicker than a macbook pro, but about the same dimensions width and depth. Not sure how much room there is to play with on those but they look nice.

    Carnyl,
i was shocked too. They must have had some units preassembled just awaiting the 8800 GTX cards.Hope they fully tested my rig before shipment. But as mentioned before never had a problem with other Alienware lappys.

I ordered mine on the 28th as well, and it shipped late Friday with the GTX. I was stuck on Phase 1 for 2 days after that as well, so in between the 30th and Feb 1st, it somehow was assembled (already pre-assembled?) and 200-point tested (doubt it)? All well, I guess I'll see when it gets here on the 7th.

It's silly if these systems didn't have thorough inspections because alienware will have a world of headaches with returns, repairs, troubleshooting, complaints, etc.

I travel alot for business, but I would like to give you all a heads up. If you travel never use an Alien ware or Dell XPS laptop bag. Get yourself something that screams STEAL ME alot less. Try something from Targus or anything else as long as it doesn't scream I have a very expensive laptop inside.

I learnt the hardway, lucky for me my insurance covered it. Mine was stolen in South East Asia, and they knew exactly what was in the bag.

you guys don't think the the protective sleeve the m15x comes with isn't enough? the sleeve and a backpack/messenger back should be adequate for traveling.

    Heya Gspot,

well see I had a sleeve that came with a macbook a while back... and didnt last long :S. was made out of crummy cloth and actually ended up tearing after like 2 months usage. I havent seen the sleeve that comes with the M15X so cant vouch for it yet. I could just slide the notebook in my lap top backpack but even then it still runs the risk of getting scratched, so i rather have a nice sleeve to put round it

mrwater does your alienware m15x has side lights? Because, I'm getting really confused. Some pictures of alienware m15x and m17x has side lights and some doesn't. Also did you buy a 720p w/clearview or the 1080p?

This is my first laptop, so I was wondering if you guys take any precautionary steps to test if our new system is stable. I'm afraid to load any games/programs because i won't know if the notebook had an underlying problem to start with or if it's the programs i'll be running. What do you guys do?

Absinthe42: It lights up ALL around. The only option on lighting is if you get the illuminated keyboard or not! The sales rep apparently wasn't well read on the system he's supposed to be selling :)

yup, the whole monitor frame lights up. it looks very cool.

i got my gears of war in the mail- played the first couple of levels.
it was a pain in the ass to set up (had to update drivers, game crashes if you use the autorun to start it for some reason), but it runs pretty smooth on high settings using the 8700. I turned off the post processing, because it's why I hated the 360 version, and it runs silky smooth.

Only problem is... my laptop cpu and gpu both hit around 77 degrees C when running the game, crysis only heats it up to around 65. Weird... since this is my primary computer, I just hope playing games 10 to 15 hours a week will not shorten the overall life of the unit.

Thank God, When I ordered it I did not even have the option not to have the keyboard lol. But why would you not get it. It did not make sense to me because it says on the website it lights up in six distinct zones anyway. Thanks man.
You got any Pics BTW!!! I WANNA SEEEEEEE!!!!
I cant wait to get it. I was in phase 2 then I went to 4 but then I added another
2 gigs and went back to 2 again lol. Now Im at 4 again. Anyone know how long 4 takes??
Thanks for the answer on the lights also.

Ill definately be using it for gaming mrwater, but the main reason I got it was so I can Do my 3d modeling and texturing. Photoshop cs3, 3dmax, and maya running at the same time can create quite some chaos on some computers but im quite confident that the way i configured it, it will be a super beast!!!!!
    Look above for my specs,

Blegh I just dont know why the rep would say that. here is what he said.
I mean WTF MAN!!!! it makes me nervous!!

    Thank you for contacting Alienware.
Regarding your question, the side lighting on the Area-51 m15x is not currently being offered but will be soon, currently, the parts that light up are the Alien Head and the keyboard.
These systems are only available in white and will be offered in other colors in the future but at this time there is no information as to when this option will be offered.
If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    ?!?!??!?!

That's so weird! These alienware reps all say different things!
-the side lighting IS there because a sales rep told me YES, but more importantly, mrwater's pictures of the m15x he owns actually SHOW the side lights (pics are on page #5 of this thread).

As for the other colors...no one knows the actual date except the heads of alienware. ugh.

I'm still waiting for my black skullcap, just like many of us here. :(

I SOLVED THE MYSTERY ABOUT OPTICAL OUT BOOYA MOTHER TRUCKERS!

I had a minidisc optial cable from the late 1990's. For some reason I foudn it today, it had one end with a stereo looking jack and the other an optical looking jack. Tried it out- WORKS.

    5.1+HDMI, crysis on the 37 incher :) :) :)

    That is all

Absinthe, Skullcap has the same look as previous Alienware laptops. It's what makes them standout. Ripley has a more stream lined and generic look for people that want something more conservative. I love them both, but Skullcap looks more like Alienware to me and will stand out in a crowd.

So you were right on the money. Plus I kinda feel it matches my alienware desktop better. I still have not recieved an email back from the reps after I told them that I had spoke to other owners about the lighting. But Im gonna fly to florida and kick some MF'n ass If I dont have the all out disco lighting lol.

People really need to check out my rant posts. Check my posting history, read my posts.

The reps don't give the same, nor right, information out. Sometimes you'll get good ones, sometimes horrible ones.

The units ALL have lighting, only difference is the $2099 model, which isn't offered anymore, had NO way of getting the keyboard lights. Now you can opt for the kb lights if you want.

I cant believe I only have 1 positive rep thingie after all my informative posting. Pshh, I know I'm no info-bot, but come on guys :)

i just graduated college and i would say it was rare to see 1 person with a laptop in class, and rarer to see something besides a dell or alienware.

Its a really nice school. The mac labs are outfitted with G4's, LOTS of them.

well if you go to a school that targets gamers i guess you'll get a lot of alienwares, especially if the tuition is high in the first place and you have a bunch of rich kids going :)

80K HAHAHAH thats disgusting. it cost me -$12000 to go to school (financial assistance + scholarships, they paid me $2k per term)

of course i just have a degree in english and have to search like a wild dog for a job... 80k, hot damn.

and i dont mean disgusting in a bad way, just i could never imagine what it would feel like to go to a school that charged 80k tuition.
