I just don't see the financial reasoning for an M13X- Sales of the M11X would take a hit as would probably the M15X. At one time AW had multiple models; It was around the time I got my m5500 and they quickly stopped several of the models due to poor sales. The 'bread and butter' models are a portable system (M11X), a 15" (M15X), and the beastie gaming rig (M17X) and I doubt that they'll deviate from that at this time.

    Hey mb :)

you would think that there would be a decent demand for a 13 inch gamer laptop.

11" 13" 15" and 17" prtetty much covers it all

    Hey I know you. ;)

If they would have had a 13" instead of the 11.6" I would have gone that route, but I'm really digging this little guy. :p

I am considering one now that they have I core processors, but a 13 inch model would be ordered in a flash

I'm glad they finally got the Core i processors for the M11X.

Something truly amazing would have to happen at E3 in order to make me cancel my M15X order. :p

It would be nice if they did put out an M13x; just more options for everyone else.

With that said, I will still go with the smallest possible, the M11x, even if they did announce a 13-inch. I already have the M17x, so smaller is better for me in this case. The perfect package. I am just delaying until after E3 to order (the discount code is until June 30).

Let's see what they have. Looking forward to your news Charles.

The i540 is now available for the M17x and other dell laptops. The 940xm isn't there nor are the other x40 derivatives.

i540 was there (at least on the Canadian site) already when I got my R2, about 3-4 months ago. It's also present on Intel's website from the moment i5 was announced.
But other x40 model are probably less than a month away.
BTW, i540M will be replaced by i580M

That was the Clevo D900K, their first desktop CPU notebook which was a fail.

The point of that statement is? Most of us know AW used Clevo's 3+ years ago, its in the past, done and gone. All AW has to do to implement desktop CPU's is a thermal budget of 300-400w and a X58 chipset, pretty simple. If the company has chosen to use desktop CPU's in its past theres no reason it cant happen soon again.

I think it's not about whether or not such system was used in the past and how many problems it had, but rather in the fact that D900F and the upcoming X7200 are hot sellers with 0 competition. I'd jump on it eyes wide shut in Dell's stead.
Also, it would be a steal with the AW quality and design, RGB LED, backlit keyboard, etc...

I'm hoping for some sort of update on the M15x, mainly a newer video card, 260m is getting old now.

Need to buy this laptop for school soon. Does anyone know when we will know what they have in store for us? Do they have a press conference?

The 5870 and 480M aren't happening ever for the M15x. You can of course buy the M15x with the lowest end card and buy a 5870 separately and install it yourself. But Alienware won't ever be releasing it for the M15x nor will they be releasing the 480M.

Maybe, it depends on it's TDP and how Dell/Alienware feel about it in their M15x. You'll have to wait and see, maybe you will hear something about it at E3.

I'm not sure. I think E3 starts on June 15th and ends on the 17th IIRC. I think Chaz has a meeting with Alienware on the 16th or 17th, he will undoubtedly post something about his discussions with them, along with pics of new products and stuff.

I'm new to the scene relatively speaking, latency was always an issue with Nvidia even predating 9800 GTX?

I have no doubt Alienware will move on a 480 notebook, Nvidia has contracts and money to make, and Alienware is one of the very few companies that cater to the 480 mobile card.

I have a question. As of today I plan to buy an m15x model with

    ATI HD 5850
    i7 Q820 processor

Do you think anything drastic will change at E3, such as a whole new design for the m15x or a new model to replace it? Or maybe a video card that would up that one? I want to stick with ATI though..

What about RGB LED, is that possible with the m15x?

Take out the "s". I can almost guaranty a single 480M but no SLI. System isn't designed for a 100W GPU let alone two of them.

    Why I say SLI 460M or 470M.

Even a single 480M's porridge would be too hot for the M17x without a cooling redesign but the cooler porridge of a GF104 GPU would be just right. ;)

    Better in English??? here:

    Notebookcheck: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M

Hmmmm...just a thought here but just looked at the 480m vs. 5870 on crysis.....on ultra settings, the 5870 pips it which surprises me!

Dissapointing on the 480's part to say the least....the performance jump while fairly good in tessalated games I would've expected more.

Basically from the notebookcheck review it is clear that for gaming a single 480M will not be able to compete in terms of FPS with CF5870.

So to conclude, unless AW comes up with some way of making the M17X with 480SLI then the CF5870 will stay kind of the hill for high end gaming until ATI comes out with the Island GPU...

Basically, those kinda figures settle it for me.....pound for pound performance, i think the 5870 wins hands down....although maybe not as strong in some areas, its obviously better (slightly) in others.

For such a small jump in peformance i think Nvidia will find it hard to compete with the 5870 in terms of price to performance.

Also a point to note maybe the fact that the tested 480m laptop also had a higher cpu than the 5870 tested laptop which had a 820qm so it would or should perform much better dont you think?

Well that is more then clear. What is unclear is how well the card overclocks and whether the drivers are lacking as it stands. Seeing the temps though in that review it seems it wont have much room to even overclock....I am not seeing the worth in paying the $300+ premium on the card so far.

The issue is we don't know much about that card either. For all we know it could be a 70 or 80 watts card...

The M15X thermal design is limited and I am not sure it could handle such a card.

Then again it's only speculation... AW might come out with refreshes able to handle all of that...

We will know within days... Hang in there.

The figures that i looked at provided by notebookcheck for the GTX480m as opposed to the ATI 5870 (both singular and not c/f or sli) seem to show very little "ground shaking" improvements over and above the 5870. Some gains, some losses....

The 480m tested was coupled with a higher cpu so not quite a fair comparison, actually would give the 480m an edge if anything....actually, the 480m tested laptop had a desktop 940 cpu and 6gb ram as oposed to the results obtained for the 5870 which was tested using an 820qm and 4gb

Looks to me that all the Nvidia marketing about being the latest ATI beater was a load of tosh....i mean, yes...it may be slightly better in some areas but doesnt warrant a markedly higher price IMHO.

Also, thinking about TDP, the ATI's are much friendlier than the 480m .... having c/f 5870's is more "economical" than having sli 480m's which would perform quite nicely as a portable gas cooker!

(I am new to this stuff, correct me if i am wrong but this is my intepretation of things when comparing the two)

Guys, look at the GPU-Z sensors screenie - 84C @ load but not even the max! And probably just the core temp, the memory would easily hit 100C in Crysis, IMHO.
