I'd say - yes, it's hot. Their lab has ~20-22C ambient temp.
What if someone has 30-35C room temp?
We need to see 2 things:
    1) Highest temp reading after a few hours of playing Crysis (including the ambient temp)

    2) DPClat Checker screenie.

then we can proceed to FPS :)

Im still not convinced its the all singing all dancing gpu its ben made out to be.........even if AW DOES announce a singular 480m at E3, its not something thats gonna make me want to change from my c/f 5870's that ive ordered which will beat it.....(at least i think it will lol)

Only time will tell with more effective benchmark. I think the problem is they still use 40nm process and should go down to 32 or 22 to use less power and therefore reducing the thermal power design which seems to be a huge problem. Engineers need to rethink totally the future of GPUs or it seems like we are likely to enter an age of extremely hot GPUs in the next 5 years until something better comes along.

Yeah a lot of people are mentioning a water cooled laptop and I would love alienware to make one but the technical challenges for it are quite great. Small water pump, leakage possible if travelling. How about pressure changes in planes... Etc... I am sure all of these can be worked through but AW probably does not want to spend the time and money required for such a cooling system.

That maybe, but in the mean time, they are left with one "hot chip" to sell....the maths dont add up and i think its the latest nvidia blah to try and compete with ati.....might be wrong but thats my guess.

Just out of interest, why did you return your AW? - problems?

Do they still sell the sxps13 in the US or anywhere else? It's been missing from the Belgian dell site for months, maybe this means they will introduce a new one at the E3? It would be a real stretch if dell would wait till SB.

Yeah it was a horrible experience... The system came refurbished with scratches and a used palm rest. The screen had two dead pixel one towards the top and one in the middle of the screen.

The power adapter sticker's was cut, the hat was used, the AW sticker that comes with the system was put back onto some paper half the logo's size so hair was sticking to the back of the sticker and the manual was missing 10 pages and the logo on the manual was coming off.

Let me tell you how mad I was...

I returned it and I am now waiting for any E3 announcement otherwise I will just re-order the same PC.

Interesting, I didnt notice the tests with the 5870's were only done with a 820qm. There's a dramatic scaling difference in seems even from the 820qm to the 920xm with the 5870's.

IDK it would be pretty shocking but I think if we paired a single 5870 with the desktop 940 they had for the 480 tests the lead in non-tessalated games would completely evaporate, even possibly come to a tie. The scores in tesselated games would shrink to a 10-20% increase. Speculation of course with note of how much ATI scales with better CPU's and that ATI is not utilizing its shaders yet for tesselation appropriately.

That's very true. ATI will definitely improve in tessellation with better drivers and undoubtedly will scale pretty well with a desktop CPU.

Thats exactly what i was thinking......making the 480m not such a great prospect given the TDP....on balance, (if we COULD pair the 940 desktop cpu with a single 5870, i too would love to see the results....i am thinking Nvidia would be pooing in their pants right about then.........)

Its pretty much a given that ATI drivers will only improve the 5870 and where do Nvidia have to go to improve the 480?

Also, remember that we are still waiting for MUCH better drivers from Dell for the 5870. It's absolutely not acceptable they released the cards with drivers months and months old.

Once we get good drivers, the 5870's will blow everything out of the water. Including sli 480m

My money is still on c/f 5870's although those tests were done with single gpu's (cpu and ram in favour of the 480) they show that the 5870 isnt that far off in real terms.....in fact it even outperforms the 480 in certain circumsatces.....all that and STILL using old drivers which have yet to be updated by ATI.....

Things can only get better for the 5870....

Note: i would be very suprised if AW announced sli 480's at E3.....meaning that using the above results, coupled with driver updates, means for me anyway, that c/f 5870 is gonna be better than a singular 480 (if thats a possibility)

I'm actually pretty sure AW has a 480M SLI laptop in the works. Not sure when it will be released and available for purchase, probably not for a few months, but I'm sure it will happen. They will probably mention it at E3, along with the single 480M laptop/addition/revision you are speaking of.

I hate to disagree with a fellow Canadian, but I just don't see sli 480ms without creating an entirely new laptop to accommodate the gpu's.
Why release crossfire 5870's and replace it less than two months later?

Just to replace the R3(480M SLI) with R4(6870CF) later due to latency issues, is that why you want it ? ;)

Look at the tests again. 84C on the core, during normal gaming load (not even the max value), in a Clevo with the best cooling!!? And all that to have 9% average FPS increase with a desktop (vs a mobile) CPU?!
    You're scaring me

I don't want anything actually. I won't be getting any of these AW revisions or new laptops. My girlfriend wants to buy my M17x and I want a powerful desktop with a small laptop to accommodate it, like an Acer Timeline or an M11x. I've kinda lost interest in the gaming laptop game. It's too expensive for me to keep up.

All I was saying is I'm sure AW will be releasing a laptop with dual 480M's, and I'm sure we will hear something about it at E3. Maybe we wont but I don't see them passing it up, even though they probably should.

Even if AW did have an sli 480 tucked away, given the figures, i wouldnt want one....full stop. They would run far too hot without a full revision of the AW cooling, too expensive in comparison to the c/f 5870 and without a significant improvement i really dont se why anyone would want them....apart from those of us with more money than sense....

Who says they wont create an entirely new laptop? The M17x R2 has been out a lot longer than 2 months. I'm sure 5870's would be available on the newer model as well, and besides, I wouldn't expect to be able to purchase this newer model for another few months. Those are just my thoughts on what we might see or hear at E3.

I'd be happy to purchase another alienware laptop in the future that supported the 480's, but it would have to be metal, have an RGB screen, excellent cooling, and more flashly lights :D

I love my M17x don't get me wrong, and I'll probably try and hit my girlfriend up to let me borrow it on occasion :p but I have no use for a DTR because I mostly game at home in one spot 98% of the time. Like this I can have a much more powerful computer for less, as well as more upgrade ability for less. I'll just buy a small somewhat game capable laptop for cheap to compliment a nice desktop.

I have just ordered a M15x, I have got the quote e-mail and all I need to do is send it back to confirm. Just holding onto see what the E3 brings?

I went for the ATI 5850 (Because GDDR5)
I was going to go for the 620m but the 720qm would be easier to upgrade at a later stage and the 820qm, well I can't justify £590

Discontinue all alienware laptop products and only service overpriced desktops starting at $5000.

Remember the M17X R1. We knew weeks in advance because of the countdown on AW website but no one knew what it looked like at all and how good it would be...

I think they are capable of keeping some things under a tight wrap.
