I know. Intel takes it step by step.
You will have 5W Skylake coming out first.
    Then 15W Skylake
    Then 47W Skylake

47W wont release until 2016. Frank is right about Skylake coming in 2015 but it will be low end 5W CPUs (and maybe 15W). Intel cant release HQ/47W Skylake in 2015. That would make 47W Broadwell redundant.

Its the way its gonna go down 100%.

The new Alienware 17 will surely deliver the weakest bench scores of all newer laptops with gtx980m. Such was the case when the previous version of Alienware came with gtx780m. Dellienware delivered a useless bios with crippled TDP for the (GPU) in Alienware 17 and 18 ...

4980HQ will probably score about 8500-9000 physics at most in 3DMark11 and around 11-12K overall with a BGA 980M (if it doesn't have any throttling issues), roughly on par with 7970M CF and an average Second Generation i7 2820QM quad from about 3 years ago.

4710HQ will be even more pathetic on the physics side, probably in the range of about 7600 in 3DMark11.

A 4710HQ and R9 M295X will likely fall in the 8K overall score range. Definitely nothing to write home about. This is 2011-2012 era 6990M CF and 2760QM performance. If they remain true to form, the AMD GPU will be a lousy overclocker and driver updates will be hit or miss. R9 M290X owners got optically downgraded to 8970M as soon as they installed AMD drivers that did not have OEM modded INF files to rename the GPU something new and fancy.

The problem with all the above it that it is 2015, and nobody smart wants to pay a premium for 2 to 4 year old performance levels. Even those old machines are still upgradeable. The new ones are not.

It does not matter which processor you purchase in the new Alienware. None of it can overclock much. Everyone will be throttled down to 47 watts during the benchmark tests With Stock clocspeed and no turbo boost. All overclocking going to meet a watt barrier in motherboard anyway. Guaranteed a crippled bios with hefty throttled TDP for cpu and gpu. That Dellienware would use a 180 watt Power Supply that I do not understand. I think new Alienware now is the worst product of new laptops with gtx980m of all brands. :nah:
Edit: And read about new Alienware (specifications) is like reading a horror novel ..

Yeah, 47W is a joke. That's one reason why I call machines of this type a jokebook.

They won't be using a 180W AC adapter with 980M. It pulls more than that running stock. Maybe with R9 M290X it would be OK, but it would run out of power and shut off when gaming or benching with a 980M. I bet they just recycle the same 240W AC adapter they have been using for a number of years. The performance demands the SLI machines exceeded the capacity of the 330W AC adapter a couple of years ago. They seem to forget that many of their customers do not buy an Alienware with intentions of running it stock. Some do, but there are plenty that want more than status quo. Look how many Alienware 14 owners were overclocking their new machines last year. Gaming at 30-40 FPS is for console jockeys.

I think I read in the manual that it should be 180 w. What is correct?
Anyway this is the biggest betrayal Dellienware have done to us Alienware perfomance enthusiasts. Worse than when they destroyed the possibility of using two power supplies in the last Alienware 18.

Simply saying being able to run asymmetric CF on desktop AMD cards is not pertinent to the GA, because nVidia or AMD you can't cross a desktop card with a mobile one, so there's no additional advantage to going AMD in the context of the GA.

Although I am curious whether dual GPU boards would work with the GA. PCIe bandwidth is limited to x4 right now due to the ULV CPU, but full quad cores on the new AW15 and AW17 will give the full x16. The triple slot Titan Z's PCI bracket won't fit in the GA, and 295X2's power draw is going to trip that 460W PSU. But assuming the PSU can be swapped out and you mod the GA to take triple slot cards, can the Titan Z and 295X2 be made to work with the GA.

ASUS also likes to redesign their custom MXM card, and so the cards from the G73 and G750 look nothing like each other. Although according to ASUS they redesigned the GPU in the G750 to increase surface area and improve thermals. As mentioned at least you don't have to junk the entire motherboard if the GPU craps out. But with all the tricks that ASUS pull to make it hard for the end user to do anything with their notebook, (putting a "warranty void" sticker on one of the CPU heatsink screws are you f'ing kidding me ) it's hard to believe that this is anything but a deliberate anti-consumer move.

Well ironically with so many wells, all is NOT well. :D

It really depends on the notebook manufacturer's implementation. Intel's specified TDP can mean absolutely nothing (in the case of SLI Clevo laptops) or everything (most other laptops). If the manufacturer decides to implement a turbo power lock, then there's not a damn thing you can do unless you get an unlocked BIOS or mod one yourself. However I've found that my P370SM Clevo doesn't seem to come with such a "power saving feature", and so my 4900MQ essentially acts as a 4930MX capped at 4.4GHz single core/4.2GHz 4 cores. I can set the TDP as high as I want to prevent power throttling, and as such I've seen my 4900MQ draw 122W when benching XTU.

Admittedly I don't know if soldered HQ chips could be made to behave the same as MQ chips in a Clevo. But if the answer is yes, then manufacturers share in the blame as well, because clearly Intel's specified TDP can be tossed aside and completely disregarded as long as the manufacturer doesn't implement a power lock. Obviously laptops with HQ chips don't cater to the high performance segment, so most people are unlikely to ever care (or know any better) so this is a moot point.

Surely therefore Dellienware use only 180w. Now the Dellienware brag this solution since MSI has gone away from this.

If there is a dual GM204 GTX 990, it should be able to fit. Given Maxwell's efficiency, no doubt it'll be dual-slot and probably 250W ballpark. 590 (365W) and 690 (300W) were both dual-slot cards. No idea if SLI will work inside the GA though.

Because of the 180W PSU, the CPUs will not overclock UNLESS connected to a GA, to free up the wattage.

How extreme is that? Don't you want one right now!?

Still, the problem I see with this is that once Nvidia decides to release a fully enabled GM204 mobile GPU, getting two of them in SLI in a Clevo or MSI GT80 and overclocking them will more or less give you the same level of performance without chaining you to a desk like the GA does.

yea not looking forward to seeing how that beast will cost. The gtx 980 wasn't enough of an upgrade from my 780 ti to warrant buying a new card, but I have a feeling big Maxwell might end up in my hands... and my wallet is going to hate me for it. :p

Exactly, although it would be nice to put my 780 ti to some use once I upgrade to a new card.

I don't know if someone already posted this but already offered some impressive competition against the alienware 15.
    The aorus x5.

Nice features that surpass alienware 15:
    - 965M SLI!!! in a 15 inch laptop!!
    - 4K display that can be ran without the need of a graphcis amplifier.
    - full aluminum chassis, instead of partial.
    - a lot thinner than the alienware 15

Compromises compared to the alienware 15:
    - The 4K display is igzo compared to the IPS of alienware 15
    - The 965M SLI in such a thin chassis will run at ~95° when gaming max power. (I assume it will be this hot compared to the results of the aorus x7 and the x3 pro, though throttling never occured on there). But on the other hand I still don't have a confirmation how well the 980M runs on the alienware, perhaps that one will run too hot too. so not necessarily worse than alienware.
    - The thinness comes with the compromise of no 2.5 inch hard drive bays being available on the laptop.

Now Gigabyte has the brand "worlds 1st" 15 inch SLI laptop, and world's strongest 15 inch laptop. Props to gigabyte, my only concern is heat though, but perhaps a laptop cooler can help significantly thanks to it's full aluminum chassis.

Why get a laptop with dual 965m's when you can get one with a single 980m that will cool better and have none of the issues SLI can bring?

Yeah, like massive performance increase. Gotta hate that! The 680M SLI and 780M SLI owners should be ashamed for having old laptops that are more powerful than a single 980M. ;)

The Lenovo Y510p already had SLI in a 15" form factor. Them claiming worlds 1st is BS. Also 965m SLI isn't going to be much more powerful than a single 980m if at all.
If they machine uses MXM slots (not sure) , then that would be something to write home about.

Maybe they will if they use dual 330W AC adapters or single 650W bricks. I'm seeing 325W from one overclocked 980M and two in SLI with an extreme overclock are more demanding than my dual adapter mod can manage. Johnksss is pulling over 700W from his 980M SLI setup in the P570WM3.

People keep talking about a 185W AC adapter for 980M and that has to be misinformation. I would just about be willing to bet money they use the 240W adapter that has been standard with the 17" for a long time, and even that would not be enough. A single 980M needs to be backed by a 330W AC adapter for the best results for people that like to overclock their GPUs.

Running at stock clocks 980M seems to draw a little less than 780M, but once you start overclocking it with an uncrippled vBIOS, it turns into a massive power hog like Haswell mobile XM CPUs.

It would be kind of retarded having to connect to the eGPU to overclock the CPU and GPU. That defeats the purpose of even owning a gaming laptop if you cannot use it like one. Might as well have no discrete GPU and run only from Intel HD Graphics when unplugged. Why pay for 980M if you cannot use it like a 980M is meant to be used. Sounds like a waste of money to me.

I'm going to find out - ordered one yesterday, just before they pulled all the CPU options and restricted it to the 4710HQ. Also an empty GA.

I'm not blaming Dell for this except the fact that they are doing this ahead of being required to limit power draw. As I said earlier the manufacturing world is coming under increasing pressure from governments (pressured by the loopy treehuggers) to 'be more green'. I could see this coming quite a while ago when the EU dictated that all household electrical items must have a certified economy rating. Next step of course it to enshrine it in law and make goods that do not comply illegal. It's already hapened here with vacume cleaners no longer allowed a high power motor and all coffee makers must turn off after one hour. Just the start. It will be slower in the US as the consumer is much more respected (except maybe CA?) but since these goods are manufactured for a worldwide market you'll get whatever the OEM's decide - one size fits all.

I believe that by plugging in an externally powered device (the G/A) it will negate the requirement for meeting the limits thus allowing more power draw. I'll be finding out and of course reporting back :D.

Oh, and it is coming with a 180w PSU...

Holy Moly, you didn't get that off an Alienware/Dell website did you?! I thought that was the previous cr*p from MSI!!

EDIT: And the confirmation from MickyD that it's 180W (he's ordered one - probably written on the inventory listing!), makes me think this NOS sh*t is true! I hope Alienware get shafted in reviews of their laptops, they deserve to if they're soldering their GPUs and providing cheap *ss power adapters and trying to sell that as an advantage by having a NOS system! MSI finally woke up & stopped offering the NOS system & 180W power supplies for their flagships, and now Alienware decides to pick up that consumer deceiving marketing mantle! If this really is gonna be the case, then Alienware laptops will probably have the worst gaming performance & worst benchmark scores of a lot of the laptop manufacturers: Clevo, Asus, MSI are probably all gonna offer more potential!! Alienware seems nothing but a glossy facade with lights and Alien Heads at the moment! Alienware engineers have either had a lobotomy or are now puking up each morning in toilet cubicles in disgust at their abortion!

Remember that GT70 had GTX 880M and 4x10MQ CPU and it did fine on a 180W PSU. Overclocking wise it wasnt greatest though, because MSI made a system where it draw power from the battery as well as the PSU at the same time.
GTX 980M draw a good deal less power than 8GB 880M, especially when its soldered and with 4GB VRAM.

I think it will run ok with that 180W PSU for AW17 but I also think they had an evil plan of blocking any serious overclocking attempts on it. Now that they eliminated 57W MX processors as well, it reduce power demand further

I never said anything about actually worthy SLI setups. Dual 965m's will barely get you more performance than one 980m, especially in the Aurus's thin poorer cooled chassis compared to a 980m in the beefier m15 chassis.

I'm sure they will. 9/10 consumers have no idea what they're purchasing. There are people on YouTube saying, "Ha, I bought an Alienware 15 bro, so cool. I got the 4k display and i5 processor, it's the most powerful." As soon as he tries to game on this, he's going to realize he made a mistake and probably return it.

Alienware is nothing but "hyped up" junk today. That hype is great for the bottom line, but only if your products are not knock-offs of all previous generations.

SO my question is the alienware 15 going to run the graphics amp at full x16 pcie GEN 3 based on the fact it doesnt have a ULV cpu?
I cant get good facts here..........what is the deciding factor the on board chip of the laptop or the Actual Graphics amp itself that limits the x4 PCIE?

would it be safe to say that that if the Current amplifier's hardware itself isnt capable of 16x that later on they will release another revision and the laptop will take full advantage of it?

We woulda been on page 30 by now if the 18 R2 was released. Everyone showing off their maxed specs and great prices. I see a zero showing now on the 17 as of last night.

I don't see how it's possible with the m.2 sata drives that share the pci-e bus.

nm- i see it shares with the SATA controller, it is m.2 ULTRA that shares the pci-e cpu lanes

If the AW 18 R2 were released, it would also be soldered junk. There would be even more outrage within these forums, lol. :D

LOL... dual soldered GPUs for SLI... not sure if they'd risk doing that. Soldered CPU for sure though. I saw the Eon17x with 4790K at 4.5Ghz. Meanwhile these new jokebooks (thx Mr. Fox) don't even O/C with the 180W adapter.

yeaaaa definetly sata.... but really would like to have a definete answer on it?

from what im reading they say that the only reason the 13 was limited to x4 is because of it being a ULV cpu

I don't see why not, the 4xxx series has 16 lanes just like the desktop side. the big 6/8 desktop cores have 40 lanes, and the big 6/8 desktop cores have motherboards with 2 PLX chips to run 16/16/16/16 quad sli/fire :D.

Hehehe...! Yep, the Alienware 13 is great and powerful little machine, with the news i7 cpu of course!
But I thin I will order the 15. I have the graphic amplifier at home waiting.
