The difference is 500/800/1250 vs 550/950/1375. The performance difference will be roughly proportionate, ie. approx 10-15%.

there will be few heating problems because the computer is a little bit bigger... or less problems at least. This has ArcticSilver-5 which is the premiere for thermal paste.

I pointed out all that stuff melinapayne to you when explaining the pros and cons of both systems. You wanted black and thats why i tried to help :). Beyond the color though buying from either Gentech or Xotic will offer you a peace of mind that bestbuy wont/cant.

I'm sure there would be one that could do it i.e. maybe car painting company...
Or just scrape of the old paint and simply spray it with black spray-paint, but that would not look very neat.

Most cosmetic modifications to the chassis of your notebook, including painting (which includes painting the trim black and adding that airbrushed triforce), will void your warranty. Which, if you didn't care about voiding your warranty, I would just buy the Best Buy model and upgrade it to the specs you wanted (which would probably end up being cheaper than buying it pre-built with those specs).

Want to work out but can't get out to the gym? Strap this thing to your should and run some stairs.

Going to see if I can find any pre-release at BB to check out in hand.

I'm 99% sure it does, but it most likely will not have the mounting bracket (which you can buy from ASUS for around $20, probably cheaper from elsewhere).

Who got this info? Did they directly copy it from Best Buy?

I say because the P8700 does NOT have 6MB of cache; it only has 3MB.

It's my mistake, it does indeed have 3MB L2 cache like you said, I meant to put that but I had the Q9000 on my mind, so accidently put 6MB L2 Cache. I corrected my post.

Ah. OK. I only ask because I'm really waiting for a T9xxx CPU (45nm, 6MB) in a G71/51 to come out. I was like, no way, it's already here!

    It's all good. :)

if you want bluray, order a ct10n that is dell branded from a guy in texas on ebay(forgot his name) he sells it for 79.99 with free shipping.

its a bluray reader, dvd writer combo
it reads blu rays at max 4.8x speed for SL and DL BD-ROM and BD-R, BD-RE

fastest laptop blu ray reader drive in a laptop, its a 12.7mm in height drive with sata connections for all modern laptops that have a sata drive built in..

i have one sitting here ready to go in the G51 as soon as i make sure its safe to be running with the darn high gpu temps...
--- NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE BATTERY!! AND POWER BRICK!!---
to upgrade modern sata drives in systems like HP or gateway, you take two bottom screws out of bottom of laptop slide drive out, remove bracket on back of drive and install on new drive, carefully remove front drive bezel from old drive undoing clicked in plastic clamps being careful not to break them, install bezel same way on new drive, pop back in and put screws back in bottom of notebook, reset system and vista should detect new drive and wala bluray, also install bluray software to watch! or anydvdhd!!

Lets say you decided to get that 70 dollar blue ray off of Newegg. Will that work through ESATA with a caddy? I'm strong and cheap so if it works I would do it.

Just keep in mind, as soon as they do that, your warranty from ASUS (in its full entirety) will be voided.

Because its a non-reversible "unauthorized modification". If it was reversible it wouldn't matter because you could reverse it before sending it in.

I just got back from Best Buy, where I looked at the new Asus offerings. The G71's screen is definitely low quality. Poor screen uniformity and viewing angles. It's sort of hard to check contrast (mainly black level) in a brightly lit store, but it looked a lot like the Gateway 7805 (WXGA screen), which has a terrible black level and contrast. The Asus definitely look somewhat washed out compared to some other models.

The G51 contrast actually looked somewhat better, also the edge to edge uniformity, but that could just be because the smaller screen means less variation in viewing angles when looking at it head on. But all in all, this screen wasn't anything to write home about.

The whole store was filled with cheap laptops with cheap screens. Sad. I consider screen quality to be one of the most, if not the most important part of a laptop. The only quality screens I saw there were on the Mac Books. My old Dell E1705 WUXGA screen that I'm looking at right now blows away any of the PCs I saw at Best Buy.

You'll need SATA interface like this:

post it in the g51 forum. not here.

I TALKED TO AN ASUS REP. he says "we can cover parts as long as vents are not covered up. we will not replace the chassis if it is painted. We will cover the inside parts and the screen though."

the guy was like- wh- what? you want to do what? you want to PAINT IT?

    ::chuckle::

Honestly, just buy the G71GX that isn't downgraded and get over it. You won't void any warranties, your screen won't suck and you'll be happy. Sure you'll be approximately nine hundred dollars poorer, but you'll be ecstatic and won't be worrying about nonsense things.
