lol you certainly convinced me![]()

-
LOL (was that sarcasm?)
-
The difference is 500/800/1250 vs 550/950/1375. The performance difference will be roughly proportionate, ie. approx 10-15%.
-
Of course not I have no idea what you're talking about :rolleyes2:
lol but seriously I'm going to be leaning towards this one alot if there's no heating problems. -
there will be few heating problems because the computer is a little bit bigger... or less problems at least. This has ArcticSilver-5 which is the premiere for thermal paste.
-
The G51 doesn't have AS-5?
-
i'm not sure. i was just making a statement. With the heat that high, its either no/low heat exhaust or no AS5
-
I pointed out all that stuff melinapayne to you when explaining the pros and cons of both systems. You wanted black and thats why i tried to help
. Beyond the color though buying from either Gentech or Xotic will offer you a peace of mind that bestbuy wont/cant.
-
is there a company that can paint it black for me or something? (good song btw)
-
Yes im a Stones fan to
as for black paint im sure there companys who can but that would void your warranty as well
.
-
I'm sure there would be one that could do it i.e. maybe car painting company...
Or just scrape of the old paint and simply spray it with black spray-paint, but that would not look very neat. -
Most cosmetic modifications to the chassis of your notebook, including painting (which includes painting the trim black and adding that airbrushed triforce), will void your warranty. Which, if you didn't care about voiding your warranty, I would just buy the Best Buy model and upgrade it to the specs you wanted (which would probably end up being cheaper than buying it pre-built with those specs).
-
Want to work out but can't get out to the gym? Strap this thing to your should and run some stairs.
Going to see if I can find any pre-release at BB to check out in hand. -
hahahah are you calling him fat? -1 jk
i really want to do that, what are the prices on the BB warranty's? -
Well I could certainly use the exercise
-
hahahahaha....... does anyone know the specs on that computer?
-
The specs for the G71GX-RX05 at Best Buy are:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 @ 2.53 GHz w/ 3MB L2 Cache
CHP: Intel P43 + Intel ICH10
RAM: 6GB DDR2-800 (3x2GB)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1GB GDDR3 @ 500/1250/800
HDD: 500GB 5400RPM (Space for Additional Drive)
DSP: 17.1" @ 1440x900 LCD
OPT: DVD Burner
BAT: 8-cell 5200 mAh
PRC: $1149.99 + Tax
WTY: 1-Year [2-Years with VISA Platinum] (Up to 3-Years with Geek Squad Warranty) -
does it have two bays for hard drives?
-
I'm 99% sure it does, but it most likely will not have the mounting bracket (which you can buy from ASUS for around $20, probably cheaper from elsewhere).
-
Who got this info? Did they directly copy it from Best Buy?
I say because the P8700 does NOT have 6MB of cache; it only has 3MB.
~Ibrahim~ -
It's my mistake, it does indeed have 3MB L2 cache like you said, I meant to put that but I had the Q9000 on my mind, so accidently put 6MB L2 Cache. I corrected my post.
-
(this should be an official thread) anywho, it think i'll just get the one from xotic and skin it black. would it be seemless and glossy like the comp shown? or is that ultragloss or somn
-
Ah. OK. I only ask because I'm really waiting for a T9xxx CPU (45nm, 6MB) in a G71/51 to come out. I was like, no way, it's already here!
It's all good.
~Ibrahim~ -
Ok so correct me if I'm wrong, but bb is only going to be selling 1 version of the 51 and 1 version of the 71? if so that sucks, because i have best buy store credit and i need blue ray!
-
is it going to be a blu-ray as well as the coticpc version?
-
the model is a year and a hald old. this guy from redbarncomputers.com told me that it was an ultrqa scaled down
-
if you want bluray, order a ct10n that is dell branded from a guy in texas on ebay(forgot his name) he sells it for 79.99 with free shipping.
its a bluray reader, dvd writer combo
it reads blu rays at max 4.8x speed for SL and DL BD-ROM and BD-R, BD-RE
fastest laptop blu ray reader drive in a laptop, its a 12.7mm in height drive with sata connections for all modern laptops that have a sata drive built in..
i have one sitting here ready to go in the G51 as soon as i make sure its safe to be running with the darn high gpu temps...
--- NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE BATTERY!! AND POWER BRICK!!---
to upgrade modern sata drives in systems like HP or gateway, you take two bottom screws out of bottom of laptop slide drive out, remove bracket on back of drive and install on new drive, carefully remove front drive bezel from old drive undoing clicked in plastic clamps being careful not to break them, install bezel same way on new drive, pop back in and put screws back in bottom of notebook, reset system and vista should detect new drive and wala bluray, also install bluray software to watch! or anydvdhd!! -
best buy models i beleive dont come with bluray g51 doesnt and i think the 17" doesnt thats why the costs are down!
-
Lets say you decided to get that 70 dollar blue ray off of Newegg. Will that work through ESATA with a caddy? I'm strong and cheap so if it works I would do it.
-
i had it confirmed by a local company that they WILL indeed be able to make the red chassis.... look like the black one
-
Just keep in mind, as soon as they do that, your warranty from ASUS (in its full entirety) will be voided.
-
right. i won't do it ASAP, i just want it done. Why would it void the warranty anyways? i know putting a vynil on it won't
-
Because its a non-reversible "unauthorized modification". If it was reversible it wouldn't matter because you could reverse it before sending it in.
-
but if it doesn't mess with the insides, why does it matter? because if it has a problem, they could refurb and sell it again?
-
it says "New HP Sony NEC Blu-Ray Slim Laptop Drive Dvd BC-5500A"
also "T his drive will fit in most laptops that supports
12.7mm size/height optical drives. Please note that there is no software provided." -
I just got back from Best Buy, where I looked at the new Asus offerings. The G71's screen is definitely low quality. Poor screen uniformity and viewing angles. It's sort of hard to check contrast (mainly black level) in a brightly lit store, but it looked a lot like the Gateway 7805 (WXGA screen), which has a terrible black level and contrast. The Asus definitely look somewhat washed out compared to some other models.
The G51 contrast actually looked somewhat better, also the edge to edge uniformity, but that could just be because the smaller screen means less variation in viewing angles when looking at it head on. But all in all, this screen wasn't anything to write home about.
The whole store was filled with cheap laptops with cheap screens. Sad. I consider screen quality to be one of the most, if not the most important part of a laptop. The only quality screens I saw there were on the Mac Books. My old Dell E1705 WUXGA screen that I'm looking at right now blows away any of the PCs I saw at Best Buy. -
thanks melinapayne. can somebody please find me a blue ray drive that will work with the 71gx
-
it will fit

this is the one i was refering too!!!! this is the bluray drive you want if you plan on ripping blu rays with a 4.8x read speed!!!! and its 80 dollars with free shipping! and is a direct replacement for the drive in the asus G51 and G71 all you need to do is take old drive out take off back metal bracket, take off front bezel swap it to the ct10n drive and plug it back in the notebook.. -
same item dude, look at the two pages
-
beware that drive he found is not a SATA the sony one with the link its an IDE connector which will not work in the asus or any new laptop becuz the newer laptops use SATA!
-
its not the same item the one he linked to was a sony bec5500 oem 2x only read on bluray dvd write combo that is IDE CONNECTOR
the one i linked to is a CT10N made by LG with a read speed of 4.8x for blu ray and dvd write combo with a SATA connection for newer laptops, your giving ppl the wrong darn information learn to read!
I should know i have the correct one sitting on my desk right next to me that i bought from the dude i linked to! -
It will not fit, it's IDE interface:
You'll need SATA interface like this:
This one from Asus eStore will work:

post it in the g51 forum. not here.
I TALKED TO AN ASUS REP. he says "we can cover parts as long as vents are not covered up. we will not replace the chassis if it is painted. We will cover the inside parts and the screen though."
the guy was like- wh- what? you want to do what? you want to PAINT IT? -
thats the exact model i posted the link to a guy on ebay selling, why buy it for 225.00 buxs when you can buy it for 80 buxs shipped brand new! I have one on my desk that works great
-
interesting. How can he sell it for so cheap? --gasp-- fell off the back of a truck?
-
::chuckle::
Honestly, just buy the G71GX that isn't downgraded and get over it. You won't void any warranties, your screen won't suck and you'll be happy. Sure you'll be approximately nine hundred dollars poorer, but you'll be ecstatic and won't be worrying about nonsense things.
