Ah it's very tempting to order the X1 from newegg right now but I think I will stick with my xoticpc order just because I really want that 820QM in my G73. Plus, a bunch of people canceled their orders so hopefully that will move me up in line a bit.

 

Yea got numbers also, really no point tho since it's coming tomorrow.

And for whoever I forgot was looking at SSD's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211442 it's just a tad slower than a G2 Intel, I think it's actually faster on some read/write tests. 309 bucks for 128GB is not a bad deal in my opinion and the speed is so marginally different from a G2 you wont notice a difference. Just my .02 80 gigs seems to small and anything above 128 gigs and it gets way more expensive.

 

xoticpc does not offer CPU upgrade anymore on G73JH.

 

My current position is that I will wait for my G73JH to ship. However, if new models (from any brand) that comes with a better deal before than, then I will just move on ASUS can play hard-to-get all they like, but eventually consumers are the bosses.

Plus Aussie dollar is crap against US at the moment anyway. Might as well wait

Yeah, DVDs are 480p or below. They still look fine. I mean DVD quality is usually better than supposed "HD" streaming/online quality, but I always rent Blu Ray if it's available, since why not? Besides the better resolution, Blu Ray (surprisingly) has very noticeably better color too.

And yeah, you can use external drives, issue is mainly that they're not nearly as portable as having it in your system. Plus if you look at the price, it's only $50 more on the A1 versus the A2! That's even cheaper than external drives, so unless you're never going to watch TV or movies on your computer, I think it's completely worth it.

(Not 100% sure if they're going to actually include Blu Ray playback software though :lol: I bought Power DVD 9 Ultra or whatever to use with my external drive, and it basically works fine.)

Yikes, maybe that $1000 model was diamond encrusted or something :lol: External Blu Ray drives were like $110-150ish a full YEAR ago.

And yeah, I wouldn't worry about games and whatnot coming on Blu Ray for quite a while. It was YEARS after DVD came out that it became more or less standard. DVD launched in like 1996, and going through my game collection, even Farcry in 2004 still shipped on CD! I guess Blu Ray's adoption rate is even faster (?), but still I think it's going to be a while. Probably not until after the next gen consoles come out, would be my guess, at the earliest.

You know what's annoying about that, is I'd really prefer to buy the next step up. It's only $200ish more, which to me I'd do...but on these Core i7 Asus systems, you have to pay the full price of the CPU, since I guess you're basically just tossing a perfectly good 720.

Quick question. I placed my order from Newegg.com around 4.30 pm EST. However, my status of the order is Charged among Processing - Charged - Packaging - Shipped. I selected overnight shipment too. What would be a reasonable delivery date for me?

Note: FedEx didnt release any information regarding the failure of shipments tomorrrow. Yet =)

 

It seems as though the realization Asus had were that they could get more interest/buyers out of releasing various downgraded models after the flagship (A1) model was delayed? Was it a marketing scheme?

 

So can someone confirm with a link that the X laptop has a slot for a second harddrive? I realize that makes intuitive sense that it is based on the same platform as the A1 or A2, but haven't been able to confirm.

Also, as a more newb Q, will any internal SATA Blu-Ray drive fit in this thing? Basically, can I assume these are standardized and just order something like:

I am wondering if I can buy the SSD and blu-ray concurrently with the G73 from newegg, or whether I need to calm down and put this credit card back in my wallet until the fever passes (i.e., after I receive it and inspect)...

 

Even when they do, they'll probably only just be in like "Special Edition" versions of the game or something. And you always have things like steam even if it goes all blu-ray.

 

No, that absolutely WON'T work as that's for desktops. (Though it would work in an external enclosure, which is what I'm using.)

A year ago when I was looking there were $300 internal drives, but I don't see any on Newegg or Amazon anymore, and I'm not 100% sure how they'd fit. I mean the connection's right, but these laptops have special...cover thingees over the drive, and at best it wouldn't look the same, and maybe not fit. That's one of the reasons I just want it internal to start with this time.

Getting a separate hard drive wouldn't be a problem though. (At least on the A1 and A2...don't know if the X1 has a second hard drive caddy thing.)

 

newegg's ETA for the A2 model is 02/15/2010...hmm wonder if this is true :S

 

Unless newegg has a special hook-up with Asus, I doubt it.

Sorry for noob question but is there any reason to have 2 HDD's on the G73jh if you can't set up Raid anyway? I mean besides the extra space... (and I'd never come close to using up 500 gb anyway)

 

After the news about the plant closures in China, I really think the only options now are the x-1's from newegg. Until Mid-March now, and if your just now getting in the game, it looks like April is now what most are looking forward to for their laptops.

Are all the resellers that are currently showing Feb 17th as receive dates for their A2's still expecting those then? I think we all pretty much agree that no A1's until first week of March now for all those pre-order people.

 

To have a primary harddrive as SSD. SSD is much faster and will make your windows experience better (though not much difference for gaming). But SSD is very expensive, so you probably don't want to use it for your main storage.

I hope to use about an 80 gig SSD for my harddrive with windows and a game or two, and the 500 GB HD for everything else. Assuming the X can hold two harddrives.

I ordered my A2 from GenTech two days ago, and they said that they'd be getting a shipment in very shortly, but they didn't know if they would have enough for every order. So I would guess that the Feb. 15, 17ish area is probably true for the A2s.

On a side note, is GenTech based in Taiwan?

I ordered today and I got the 820QM upgrade through Xotic. Just speak to Justin W.. I called him in the early afternoon and it was still being offered as an upgrade (920 as well but worth $$$ not sure). Now the wait!!!!

Okay, as I remember the story there were some model A1s originally due Feb. 7 that got "held up by Customs," so presumably were in a container either here in the US or in China ready to ship. NOBODY has received an A1, right? So what happened to those machines? Are they seriously held up for a month? They are out of the factory so shutdowns don't apply, they are built so lack of Blu-Ray lasers don't apply... they were on their way and now they are just GONE???

Something is fishy here and it ain't just the waters of the Pacific Ocean...

It can be longer actually. Its a major travel time period and not at all uncommon in asian / near asian countries to have things like this. Try working with outsourcers in India when some of the team goes "poof" and disappears for a month or so.

 

Right now on my desktop I have a AMD athlon 5900+ (It's a POS and is bottlenecking my system hard) 4 gigs of ram and a HD4850 512 ram GPU and I can play MW2 on my 22" 1080p monitor with everything maxed and it never goes below 30 FPS, more around a 45-50 average. My 3Dmark 06 score is like 9800 (Should be higher but that crappy CPU is at like 100% on both cores while gaming). Anyways I think the G73 gets like a 13-14k score in 3D mark 06 so there's no reason why it wouldn't play maxed. On a side note MW2 isn't a very demanding game and I wouldn't be surprised if the G73 couldn't run 2 instances of MW2 on dual monitors and still be playable.

This may be another noob question, but I read that the SSD's have a max amount of times you can write to them (like 1,000,000 or something). Does that mean that even a little auto-save on MS Word or saving a song on itunes uses up one of those times? Or is it just talking about writing big software programs to the SSD?

I'm trying to decide if SSD is worth the cost on this.

 

I know! Apparently, the cpu upgrade is still available. Justin mentioned that there has been a lot of order cancellations today (apparently Newegg had something to do with that). The more cancellations the better!
