*wispers* Two words for ya bub, organized crime.....HAHA

Those things are on the black market now. Or in Samali pirate's hands.

Update....And I dont think there was ever a shipment of A1's sitting here in the US. All smoke and mirrors. Ignore the man behind the curtain, (boating in one A1 at a time)

I think the average life of a SSD is around 4-5 years with normal use. When it says you can write to them X amount of times it doesn't mean that just because word auto saves a 10kb file that counts as one of them. I'm not sure what the average life of a normal spindle drive is but I'd assume it shorter on a laptop you take with you everywhere because it's getting knocked around more where a SSD has no moving parts so there's really nothing to break.

So to summarize it, SSD's last just as long as Spindle drives, possibly longer depending on use and abuse.

    *Edit*
I looked it up on Google and apparently the newer SSD's can write for 5 strait years literally 24/7/365 for 5 years before they reach their life expectancy. I have no idea if this is true but I found it kind of funny.

Congrats to the new system owners..Just curious has anyone tried out Crysis on the highest possible settings? What are the FPS like? I swear 10 years down the road we will still be judging system performance by how well it plays Crysis...LOL.

    I have some weird news:

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1353581&p=53

    -------------
Apparently one of the reputable Australian ASUS resellers (Jack from LBO) is expecting a batch of A1 & A2 to arrive in Australia in 2 weeks time.

It is very strange to me how US resellers won't get theirs until 5th March while the Aussie ones (who get their A1 and A2 from US) will get it sooner?

The whole ETA thing is a mess at the moment and I doubt any of the resellers really know what is going on either

The stock markets in Hong Kong and China shut down about a week. Manufacturing plants shut down for even longer as workers go home to celebrate and return back to the plants.

This is not considered vacation per se, it's a public holiday, think Thanksgiving + New Year + Christmas in one. Officially, only 3 days are mandated, but due to the fact that most factory workers are outsourced from other parts of China, employers usually offer extended breaks that use up vacation time too. It's a vacation only because employers know they'll be losing workers anyway, and this way, they get to "utilize" their workers more. Most of the 3 week or more vacation time countries tend to be in Europe though.

Aussie resellers get their units from US distributors? Wouldn't it be easier to just have them shipped from China?

Why are a lot of people ordering from NewEgg? We're unsure of ability to add 2nd HD, unsure of ability to upgrade to BD, don't know if backpack and mouse are included, inferior warranty, not supporting the small business person...and most of all no way you can return it under any circumstances (unless it's broken and then you have to let them fix it.) Am I missing something? Because I'd sure like to have one by the end of the week myself!

too funny , I gave up on Xoticpc and went ahead and bought one with newegg today, then within 15 minutes of my newegg order I get an email from Justin, so i canceled my newegg order and went with Xoticpc anyway

As for why i went with newegg, it was because i didnt want to wait, as for the extras, i dont care about them, just sick of waiting, i was even shelling out $140 more for sales tax, thats how much i wanted it!

Instant gratification!!! Apparently, you can add a 2nd hard drive as well.. not sure of BD. I almost ordered, but I am not too technical and don't have the time to fuss around with a system.

well I can tell you from recent personal experience with Newegg that they will take the machine back, only if unopened and you have a valid reason, IE: I had ordered the G51J-A1 which had the rampant BSOD issue. I emailed there RMA department and they granted me a full refund -shipping. Now the system MUST be un-opened within 30 days of original purchase DATE, not the date you received it. Also, must have a 100% legit reason to return it, not something like I found a better machine and no longer want this one.

I returned some memory that way, but it seems like a big $1500 risk vs. instant gratification.

Because we live in a "want it now" society. You'd be craving the hell out of a Big Mac if McDonald's said they ran out of Mac Sauce.

    • You can add a second hard drive, and it will fit without a bracket. A bracket would be nice, but it will work regardless if one comes in the empty bay.
    • You can upgrade the BD-ROM with any slim BDR drive. They all have the same miniature SATA connector these days.
    • The warranty isn't inferior, it's just filled out wrong @ Newegg.
    • And about "not supporting the small business man"... ASUS went wrong here, not the consumer. And there are still plenty in line waiting for their original orders.

It's a sealed box from ASUS and Newegg will accept returns for direct replacement. Your chances of something being wrong will be slim. I have multiple packages shipped to me from Newegg every week and I've never had them do me wrong.

Yes, you forgot to ask the eleventy hundred same questions everyone else already did.

Then order a G73JH-X1 from Newegg. :) It's the same machine.

I emailed Justin first and he messaged me back "You can still upgrade to the 820 or 920 CPU's in the Asus G73JH models." I also called him in the afternoon to confirm. His email is [email protected]. He has been really good about returning emails. Also, you can call him via phone: 877-289-9684 ext. 515.

SSDs do have a read write life but its like 10 years under normal usage (and it moves reads and writes around) patterns. iirc they don't use the same el cheapo flash memory / controllers like usb flash drives do. Basically flash or magnetic HD are both effectively the life of your lappy, unless you really keep 'em a long time.

I hear they are really nice for OS / Apps, and you will be spoiled from then on. I also hear prices should come way down after the next round of minaturization hits late this year. So, being the cheapskate I am I will probably wait and see early next year myself.

At first there was little known about the Australian release of the G73JH so I think a few of the resellers here placed orders from the US. Now we know we are getting the G73JH-TZ008X which looks the exact same as the A1 except with Windows 7 Pro.

I just called a store here to find out what their ETA is for the G73JH-TZ008X and they're going to get back to me.

Just curious, why would you want to return it? Asus has a 30 day no dead pixel policy and they have a year (Possibly 2 I'm not if anyone's actually looked into it) warranty. I mean if you want a G73 then buy it, even if you get it and it's DOA or severely messed up some how Newegg has a 30 day exchange on it. So about returning it are you going to have buyers remorse? Or is money that tight that you might not make a mortgage payment if you buy it so you plan on returning it?

For me getting the X-1 here's my reasons. I wanted to put a SSD in anyways so if they'll only install 1 HD and give me a discount I'm all for it. I have a bag and I wont use the mouse. I don't watch blue rays on my computer I have a TV for that. So I can buy it now and get it tomorrow the way I want it with a SSD and minus a BR I wont ever use or wait till possibly March or later to get an A-1 and spend another $300-400 to get the SSD I want. I also plan on dropping in a 920 chip in within the year when prices drop some so my warranty is void anyways.

I'm not saying cancel orders with Xotic,Gen or anyone else, it just happens that the X-1 Model is what I was totally looking for and I would have bought the X-1 Model from them if it was available (If they sold it or even had it in stock). So get the EXACT G73 I want tomorrow or wait a month and get a model I don't and I'll have to dump more money in it to make it the way I want with a BR I don't want.

I don't think anyone is "Stupid" or anything for not still getting an A-1 or A-2, it's just the X-1 suits MY needs better.

Nothing. What can I do?? I really need it but I've already done a wire transfer(I ordered from xoticPC) so I HAVE to wait. Now that I was looking forward and believing that it would be here before the end of February, PUFF! Nothing more than problems problems problems problems... I would never do it again. That's the first and last time a pre order something that I need. I'm really disappointed with ASUS and everything else. Sorry for these words but I can't understand why they do this. I supposed to get it few weeks ago.

Sorry i wasnt trying to anybody off, I just figured maybe you recently ordered. If all of their stock is already taken and not knowing when the next shipment is really coming in, and being totally busy and getting hundreds of emails, i would think it would be hard to answer all of them , especially being that he has no real answers from asus

To be honest it seems like no one has a clue what's going on with ETA's. Some say the 17 some say 3/5 some are later than that.....

    *Edit*

And just to add I totally respect Xotic, GenTech, and the other small companies trying to sell the G73. Asus is seriously jerking them and it seems impossible to get a real answer. I really feel sorry for them because they told everyone the ETA then Asus does random stuff like this and it turns the small companies into "Lyers" even though they can't do anything about it and they loose business. IMO Justin and Ken have done and are doing EVERY THING they can but honestly their hands a tied.

I get it and it all makes sense to me. After the feedback about the HD and potential BD addition, I'm seriously considering NE.

The thing that nags me in the back of my mind is the return option. The resellers seem to give you 15 days if it's in 100% perfect shape. NE will maybe / probably take it back if it's unopened and you have a great excuse. But I tend to shop at places that let you take stuff back if you're not happy with it. I bought a TV last week at Costco...90 days no questions asked for example. So why would I return a laptop? I've bought 5 of them now and never returned one...but I could probably come up with quite a few possibilities as this model is just as untested as it is exciting!

I've read every page of Part 1 and Part 2 as well as all of the Owner's Lounge... My sincere thanks to all who are contributing to this discussion. I don't think anyone is spending this kind of money without thinking long and hard...hundreds of pages worth!

Yea I totally understand where you're coming from, it's rough that you might possibly get burned out of 1500+ bucks because of an iffy return policy. But from another perspective, Asus has your back if you have any dead pixels (30 day) and more than likely if something is messed up on it, it's going to break within a year if was already defective when you received it. (Just my opinion) or just exchange it with newegg within 30 days.

As far as it being new it seems from the reviews from the first A-2's are really good and runs pretty cool.

Not trying to take a side or tell you what you should do, just layin out the facts and hopefully you'll get a laptop you wont regret and enjoy it wither its the A-1,A-2, X-1 or maybe even something else. Hope i could help ya some bro.

Buy from a seller that doesn't have any locations in your state. Otherwise, no. Trying to get around paying tax is known as fraud.
