I just answered my own question -- I saw the other thread. Oh this is tempting...

i know this is slightly off topic... but you guys think $800 canadian for my p7811fx gateway is good? I can sell it locally. It will almost half the cost of the new g73 on order. I have win 7 pro 64 legit key and running raid with another 200GB harddrive.

Your question can only be answered by you. You've already established that you have a buyer willing to pay $800. So, it's worth $800 to him. The only question that remains is whether you're willing to sell it for $800.
As soon as Asus comes out with an i7 with dual 5870's, I'll be selling my G73. I'll try to sell it for $1k plus shipping. Not because that's all it will be worth, but in roughly 7 months, that's what I'll be willing to sell it for. It may very well still be worth $1200 still, but I'd be comfortable with $1k. -
*edit* To clarify, has anyone confirmed it's SATA? Only makes sense but I don't want to take any chances as I'd order both at the same time. -
Just called my local reseller and he confirmed the first shipment date moved back to feb 26 here in Canada... If I could change my laptop choice I would...

Okay, tempting system...
What's the driver situation like? Can you force ATi's desktop drivers to install WITHOUT modification, as I used to do with Nvidia's prior to them providing official mobile support? Officially I've sworn off ATi until they get their driver act in gear, but...I'm still tempted, given it's the most powerful mobile GPU AND it's Direct X 11.
It looks like I can buy a spare 150 watt (I assume first party) power supply from Xotics, so that makes this a possibility for me.
Annoyingly, I have no idea how to buy an internal Blu Ray drive anymore for notebooks...they've vanished off Newegg and Amazon.
Hopefully the USB/iPod issues with earlier PM55 chipset systems have been resolved here...
+the A1/A2 (are they different?) is actually kind of tempting to me over the X1 because it comes with a second hard drive caddy I assume, and it would be fun to maybe get a 160GB intel SSD + mechanical drive for media/game installs combo. I'd need a new bag anyway, so that hopefully saves me $50 or more too. -
Hello i'm from italy
I make first pre-order from gentech on 5th january: asus g73-a1 without bluray (the same as g73-a2)
And the second pre-order on 6th february: asus g73-a2
What do you think? can i recieve at least one of this in february-first days of march?
For me it's important to know, i can't wait too much, because i need a new laptop. i start to worry about that. -

Just ordered the last (G73JH-A2) from Newegg.com with overnight shipping. At least I think it was the last one. Here's my story:
I saw it on Newegg last night but couldn't purchase because I didn't have all of my money in one account. Some was in the business account, some was in my personal account, and some was cash in my wallet. Bank was closed. I was screwed. I couldn't sleep last night at all, and my blood pressure/heart rate was out the roof...
So I went bill collecting this morning, because I had customers that owed me a crapload of money for past due invoices. Before I left to do this, I refreshed my search on Newegg.com for "G73JH" and it showed the A2 out of stock. I was p*ssed! So I went bill collecting anyway, went to the bank and shuffled around some cash, and just checked out with a G73JH-A2 and overnight shipping. After completing my order, I went back to the A2's product page and it's out of stock.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!

Go to hardwareheaven.net. In a few weeks they will update the Mobility Modder that will allow you to use the desktop drivers with Cat 10.1 and onwards and the Mobile 5xxx series.

Oh well. Had it in my cart debating it and someone got it first or they pulled the listing. They still have the X1 though. Think I'll just wait.
*edit* Aaand... it's back again. LOL -
LOL.. I had that in my cart until about 10 minutes before you ordered it. Decided to hold off after reading the return policies, etc. as I've preordered the A1 already from GenTech and had to get a grip on reality. Glad you were able to make the purchase!
-
I may have only had access to one because it was left in my cart overnight.
I added a second one (accidentally) and went to my cart, but Newegg immediately removed it saying there was a problem with the available quantity.
That's the only reason I thought I had the last one. Others may still have it in their cart. Keep refreshing and snatch one up! -
I'm on the fence- adding a year warranty is $89.99 to bring it up to the resellers' warranty. Plus, I'll need a bag (my current one isn't big enough) and a blu-ray drive added. Not sure it's really worth doing that just to have it a month early....
Heh, grabbed out of my cart again. -
Let me make sure I am understanding this correctly. The only difference between an X1 and a A2 is the removal of 1 hard drive, and the optical drive looks like a standard DVD reader?
Hmm this is very tempting to order an X1 and save a few bucks as I don't plan on a RAID setup (even though RAID might not even be an option) and 1 HDD has always been plenty for me. -
And the warranty. And no bag and mouse. Still a good deal.
-
Yeah, this laptop is way underpriced, so you're still getting a good deal with the X1. If the A2 was still out of stock, I would have bought the X1 + an Intel SSD. But luckily I got an A2!
-
Does anybody know if there will be any UK retailers stocking this.
I am torn between this and a Clevo system built by Kobalt computers.
1 of my biggest worries of this unit is that if I have to import this machine then any warranty issues would be a nightmare to solve where as Kobalt have an excellent rep for customer service -
-
-
I didn't catch on until now that the difference between the A1 and A2 is the A1 includes Blu Ray! Yay! It's definitely the one I'd get then.
So the i7 is clear cut better for games, though the i5 is certainly not a terrible chip, but when prices are this good... -
Still not optimized. Really the only engine I know of that made good effort on using multi-core is Valve's Source engine. Unfortunately means nothing to me as I hate the Source engine, looks like garbage. The only reason I even look at Valve is for HL2 Episode 3. I personally think L4D2 was just an excuse for Valve to not release Episode 3 and keep their fanboys busy not asking questions.
Personally I think game developers are more interested in optimizing games to run on the 360 and PS3 than they are for PC. -

The X1 only has 1 500gb drive. The A2 has 2 500 gb drives. Both have DVD drives. Perhaps you thought the question was about the A2 vs. the A1 rather than the A2 vs. the X1? -
-
Grrr...
I NEED this machine with the i7 620M.
__
The 1920 x 1080 screen is really good?
I say, a "lower" resolution like 1600 x 900 will get better performance in games, right?
And I usually watch some vids in 720p, these vids will look better in 900p or 1080p screen?
-
WRT to the X1 and A1, there's also the warranty downgrade as well. -
If anyone forces the drivers to install rather than using a mod tool, let me know :-/ -
Are Asus trying to be the new Dell -
I'm sure it's not deliberate. -

Random question. Im a newby when it comes to this stuff but I heard that 1066 mhz ram vs the 1333 mhz is mainly based on the specific machine, so 1333 mhz is not automatically better. So the question is which would be better for this machine? I also heard that some are coming stock with the 1333mhz
-
there's no real-world performance difference.

wow this is reminds me of the stealth bomber, any plans for 15 inch version?

To the guy who gets motion sickness, I have a few things you might try for the hell of it. First, try a good chair with adjustable headrest that supports your head while in neutral position (you don't have to lean way back to contact the headrest). Adjustable arms also. Adjust seat so your feet are on the floor. Then you are locked in for launch space cowboy. Your head and body won't be 'floating' so your balance centers may stay more normal. Next try a bigger monitor (I have a hanspree 28" in front of me atm), and/or sit closer.. keep room lighting dark, maybe hang a few tapestry/blankets and even try wearing some kind of blinders and a baseball cap to see if MORE immersion helps. Cutting out your peripheral will remove the conflicting motion 'data'.
If that doesn't work or makes it worse, try the opposite and try using a smaller screen and/or sitting further away, and keep room well lit - so that you are not immersed so much into the virtual landscape. Personally I'd prefer going further down the rabbit hole myself.
About mice - I've had a razor lachesis for awhile but I don't really like how lightweight it is. I have to cradle it with my fingers as runners so I don't push it forward when I click the main mouse buttons. I just picked up a logitech G9x laser that has a lot of weights you can add/remove so I'll prob like that one a lot more.
Still waiting to see people get the comparable msi version of this notebook in their hands and some reviews. Sucks that those with preorders of this asus have to wait so long. I'm being patient before I order at all, but maybe I'll get this or the msi by my b-day end of april lol. -
You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later.
cant help it...u guys rock...hahaha!!!
