WOW the razer abyssus has 3500 dpi! That's WAYYYYY too much! I might try it out but....that's insane. 1800 dpi is more than enough. Even 450 does the job. 3500...my god...

Anyone else confirm this on their machine? I may have to change my pre-order... I was thinking of enabling RAID later, but if it's not an option in the BIOS then...?

And we're finding there is no 3rd wireless antennae still? I'm only seeing 2 in the videos. No real reason for the 5300, but what is the manufacturer of the 'default' card? Might it be worth getting the 5300 simply for the Intel brand/drivers? (I'm linking to a Linksys WRT600N if that matters...). Or is it just that none of the 'upgraded' machines have been sent out... these are all the stock 'default' card...?

    I got that last night - both 1 & 2 for 14.99. :)

Also thanks ViciousXUSMC for mentioning Serious Sam HD....I haven't played Serious Sam in a couple years s I downloaded HD last night and played it well into the night.

Now I wonder how long until I get my G73...

I see your frustration, but RAID is kind of pointless for anything but scoring high on HDtune or other benchmarks. As far as using RAID to safeguard your data, you really shouldn't be storing anything of much importance on a mobile computer anyway.

This laptop's purpose (gaming) paired with the 8GB RAM will keep most (if not all) of the game's data cached after each level loads. And the load times will be so minimal that rotational-vs.-SSD may not even be much of an issue.

True... that's why I have network storage with RAID enabled... but if I can squeak out a few more FPS :D And if it's an option, why can't we have that option ourselves...?

But I'm really curious to see the benchmarks with the SSD's. I didn't get one as I figure I can get a better deal on my own down the road. And it'll be nice to see the scores before I decide.

In that monstrous case, you'd think they could have added a hardware RAID controller. Hell, it might even be there just not enabled in the BIOS.

I wish it had eSATA. They could have EASILY made a USB2/eSATA combo port, and I would have ordered last week.

But after seeing all of these amazingly happy recipients of the new G73JH, I'm going to look past the lack or USB3 or eSATA and just get the damn thing. I'll use a different computer for large data backups. I have desktops I can slap an eSATA card in. ;)

The hardware controller may be how the RAID option is enabled, since it's not in the BIOS. May be why you can optionally order it with RAID...

And I for one don't need the expresscard slot, USB3 or eSATA... just a kickarse gaming laptop to pass the slow times at work. And slight portability for LAN parties. I think I have chosen... wisely.

Hey guys, in Crysis, will we see the difference between 1366x768 (G51Jx 3D) and 1920x1080 (G73JH) a lot ?? for example both on High setting?? I really can't go between them... Just stuck... Will we see so much difference at gaming?

I installed and now cruising through FEAR 2. I'm running it at 1080 with everything Maximum, FSAA 4 and AA 4, and so far no stuttering or anything, it's incredibly smooth. It's mind boggling to be doing this on a laptop, single GPU. Once you see this laptop for yourselves you'll be amazed. It's much smaller than you expect. Very thin at the front, the backend looks thick because the front is so thin. It really isn't thick in the back at all. To me the highest point is about 1.5-2 inches. That's all. To carry this around is a breeze, it doesn't feel as if you are carrying a large 17" gaming laptop. But it's performance is very much contrary to it's appearance. Even playing FEAR 2 now for about 30 minutes, I cannot hear the fan above the game noise, which I have on low.

Also have any of you looked at the MacBook Pro lately?
    Starting Price: $2,499
    17" 1920 1200
    Nvidia 9400 (Umm...)
    Core 2 Duo (Shocking)
    4 GB of 1066 DDR3
    1 500 GB 5400 RPM
    - This is practically a 4 year old computer.

Anyways, just makes this Asus even sweeter because it looks phenomenal, better than a MacBook I think and it seems that's its only selling point. I know weird comparison to make, but I looked over there today out of curiosity and I am blown away.

Does the Power4Gear utility that Asus provides work with CPUs that are retailer-upgraded? I've heard that Power4Gear doesn't do much and on some benchmarks even lowers performance... Would it be better to overclock the CPU through different means rather than through Power4Gear? If so... is it possible to overclock mobile i7 processors at this time? (disregarding the 920XM)

I was really hoping to upgrade to the Intel 5300. Wonder if the resellers are going to re-adjust their pricing for that upgrade (since it's only going to be an Intel 5100 now).

Anyone willing to pop out their keyboard so we can see how that looks? I'm genuinely curious how this cooling system works.

Also, how accessible are the fans for cleaning and such?

Overall this looks like a winner.

Since the average broadband connection in the United States is 4.8Mbps (yes, I realize you might have 4328749GB/ms Internet at your house) I don't see a huge gain in having the 5300 over the 5100.

Throughput on the 5100 is 300Mbps
    -and-
Throughput on the 5300 is 450Mbps

    Both are MIMO wireless-N.

If you're transferring large files to a NAS, you should be using a wired gigabit connection anyway.

This is where the dual 500GB drives come into play. You won't need to NAS a lot of your files because the built-in storage on the G73JH is so big.

I personally would have upgraded to the 5300 just to know I had the best upgrade ASUS offered, but if there's no benefit and it already comes with an Intel 802.11n radio, I see no point in paying more for the 5300. Third antenna or not.

I'm also wondering about this. I'm a neat-freak and cannot stand anything to be dirty. I see some of the filthiest laptops that people bring into my shop, and I absolutely cannot believe how dirty some people are.

And can someone take a picture of the G73JH slid halfway into the Targus backpack? (And/or the inside of the empty laptop compartment of the bag.) I'd like to see how it fits.

I would have originally upgraded if the stock wireless radio was an Atheros or something, but since the stock wireless card is Intel, you're already getting top-notch quality without paying anything extra. If anyone thinks the 5300 is going to make their 6Mbit cable/DSL connection any quicker, they're silly.

    How about its wireless-N adapter?
Is it Intel 1000 which is a single band of 2.4Ghz or Intel 5100, a dual band of 2.5Ghz and 5.0GHz spectra? Or a generic N adapter?

As many others have said, stock thermal compound on a $1,500 laptop is going to be good enough for most anything you'll need to do. People are already overclocking their G73JH's and pulling some amazing numbers with stock paste.

I personally think paying a premium for thermal paste is just for the "feel good factor".

If you were building a new desktop machine, sure... throw a tube of paste in the cart with your order and apply it while you're building. But on a laptop ASUS has tested at 100% CPU & GPU load in their own labs, I can't see swapping it out being any better.

Hey guys, ive been following this thread since the laptop was announced, but had no reason to sign up until i had to in order to view the photos being put up!

One question, which may sound silly but i am curious. The Asus manual mentions not to rest the laptop on a bed in order to keep the vents unobstructed - is that an issue with this laptop as the vents are not on the bottom and the intake comes from the top?

Gentech posted some batter benchmarks from a little while ago (no idea how they got them)

Looks better than expected! I wonder what the systems downclocks the CPU/GPU in power saving mode?

I would imagine it says not to lay it on a bed because for some people, it would mean anywhere on a bed (under any circumstance) it's okay.

However, it's not okay if it's laying on a fluffy comforter and blocking the air vents in the back.

I'd say it'll be fine if you use it on the bed or in your lap with some common sense. (Even though I can't see having a 17" notebook in your lap would be too comfortable.) Just make sure the vents can do their job.
