I stand by my gut feeling that says this will benchmark higher than the 280mgtx easily. I also think it will blow it away in real world gaming scenarios (except for Crysis).

If you are looking for a laptop now, like I said before what are you going to wait for? Nvidia Fermi? Ati 5870 256bit? It's just getting silly. I am standing by my pre-order because this thing is going to rock my g51j-a1's 260m, and will probably smoke any other single card solution out there.

So does that mean you shouldn't order any laptop right now daveh98 that has a 260/280m in it? Because if you are saying hold off on this laptop, you are saying to hold off on any 280m level laptop which is just silly.

The other features and design choices make this laptop a great value even if it is 280m level benchmarks... I don't get all the hysteria.

Just got an email from Mr. Sony conference. He said the 4-6pm meeting today might have been an NDA behind closed doors meeting with resellers and developers, because they weren't letting anyone in. It is agonizing, but it's going to be over soon...

Judging by the CPU score in that vantage run, things will definitely change I believe. my C2D gets 6,000 clocked at 3.1ghz. An i7 820xm gets 12,400 or so CPU score, and I doubt that the 720m is 30% slower.. I think with a proper CPU score it'd be closer to 8k. it'll probably get 7400-7500@1280x1024, and I'm guessing 12800-13000 stock 3dmark06. Which will be fine by me, this is just my own bit of speculation =]

I can understand that. But, I guess my statement comes from more of a general gamers point of view. As you can see with my current setup I'm behind on the tech tree. My 9800M GTS isn't even top of the line for it's generation and it still runs games fairly well.

Also, if the 5870 ends up being a DX11 Guinea Pig wouldn't that be even more reason to hold off on one from the get go?

So when do you think we'd know by? It's 1:24am already here in the UK so I'm guessing I probably won't be awake to find out...

I'm just hoping like hell that the listed price point and release date of late January/February won't be changed last minute...

It's not a guinea pig, because the desktop 5000 series has been out for 4 months and has been destroying any Dx11 game in it's path. People are forgetting that all the developers are clamoring for DX11 because of the level of refinement and optimization over DX10.

Dx10 was like a beta test for new rendering methods. Dx11 is like Windows7 to Dx10's WIndows Vista. It was a great trial run, but the real deal Dx11 runs so much more efficiently.

Dx11 isn't going to throw in rendering experiments that hit the system for a 20-60% performance loss like Dx10 did. Read the dev diary on DIrt2 and the Dx11 code they were able to add. Dx11 is going to help cards that support it, not kill them like Dx10 did.

kinda off topic but Taylor Swift was there playing "live" and they also had a big 3D screen beside her and people had hard time telling which one looks more real  this is some serious stuff from Sony lol

Well, I think I am going to pass on this one... with it possibly only doing slightly better than the GTX280M and with between 4-6 more months of waiting for it...I think I will stick with my original purchase of NP8760. Bummer !!

Ah hell, I'm off to bed. Woke up this morning to hear about the 128bit confirmation and the possible Q2 release schedule shift - here's hoping that more bad news won't repeat itself two days in a row and I'll be pleasantly surprised when I log in again come tomorrow...

Its OK Nvidia will be our savior this time, Watch them announce Fermi getting released in April for Desktops and in June for Laptops (Which is still Q2 like the 5870 lol) also Fermi will be 2x the performance and half the heat of the previous cards.

Well that's all fine and dandy...but, simply because it's the next big thing doesn't mean you should jump ship because of it. Also, DX11 isn't going to be required for games. Games now can still be used with DX 9. Though I will agree improvement over DX 10 are welcome but is it surprising?

Also, DX 10 is 2 years old correct? DX 11 is going to need some time before it will really shine and show off what it can do. By that time however we'll likely have DX 12. Games are still going to use DX 10 for awhile. ;)

I thought that there was a problem getting the 4870's to actually work in crossfire. Has that been corrected? If so then that might be the way to go because 2 4870's should be much faster than a 5870.

Well I've seen mixed storied about Sli and Crossfire problems ever since it's been offered. But, alot of people that have Crossfire 4870's seemed happy with them. I can't really say for sure from experience...yet. ;)

that was in the whitebook. they couldnt get the heat and power working they did.

the w90 they couldnt update drivers and there was a low on gddr5 so it came out with gddr3. but the drivers are working now.

the m17x was delayed. then released. but had power issues with gddr5. but it is working now with gddr3.

i would say dx11 should be called dx10.2, since it is not very innovative from dx10..
before that, every upgrade of dx generation made huge differences.

how much more innovative do you want?? When used properly, you can get the graphics to appear damn near life like. Its all in the maker of the game how they want to make it, life-like or cartoonish...

dont expect anything to be announced new for mobile. Possibly for a late q2 or early q3 release of there Fermi for desktops.... if they can get it under control.. there is various reports out there suggesting NVIDIA is having issues with the thermal management for it.

My take, as i stated before,

If notebookcheck says the Mobility HD 5870 has a 256-Bit Bus than i am sticking with that number. I am only saying this because notebookcheck gets its specs directly from NVIDIA & ATI.. They do not make up the clock speeds or the bus speeds that they post.. I have never seen them post any false information in the past.

*The Mobility HD 5870 is ATI's flagship Mobility Card.

No one knows for sure as yet, but i wouldn't put my money on it. They've just recently managed to shrink their desktop 2xx series die and still haven't launched anythin to out-do a mgtx260/280. Even if they do announce fermi mobile cards, i dont see them coming in anywhere before Q3(i think most people here will agree with me)
All things said, this machine is awesome value for $1600, it outdoes the Gtx280m and at atleast $700-$800 lesser for the same config. Even if fermi did come out tomorrow, the price of a notebook with same config and card faster than mobility 5870,would be AT LEAST $500 more(and that's a conservative estimate)
So, i dunno about you guys, but i'm still all in for this machine, i just hope it starts shipping in Q1

128 bit or 256 I think I'll get this, if nothing it wld beat the 260M and cost less. And well the i7 processor, 17 inch screen and the 1080p display all for 1600.
My gateway is getting too old now and I gotta move-on; but heres hoping it'll be 256-bit and willl come out Q1.

yea its great i just returned my gateway 7915u after a little battle with the refund policy lol, but i think im going to hold off and maybe a few months later they might produce a 256-bit.

Basically what they did with this card is make it 128bit and raise the memory to ddr5 therefor what causes the performance increase.

But now if they cameout with a 256bit ddr5 that would be sweet.

Also, i heard ati cards perform better with higher resolutions and AA is this correct?

If I was you I'd get rid of the G51j too. I recommended that model to a couple of friends of mine who were looking for a 15 inch lappy and all they complain about is how it gives them BSOD with Borderlands, L4D2,MW2 and other Steam installs.

I told them about the G73JH and they are scrambling to sell their G51J w/BSOD to get the G73JH.
