You say we are nothing compared to the desktop segment, which isn't exactly correct. There are more laptops being sold than desktops since a couple of years so nvidia is shooting itself in the foot, or its relying on the consumers who buy seperate graphic cards to upgrade their desktop themselves.

Wow. a lot has happened since last night. So now that we have the specs, will the hysteria end? haha And I wonder if I will still be called an Ati shill like last night.

According to those graphs it handily beats the 280m and that is good for me!

yes but like nvidia admit there is a big war in the small size laptops market. Infact Nvidia develop NVIDIA ION Graphics Processors. Ati and Nvidia make a good work in mobile market but we can't ask to put a lot of investments in gaming enthusiast sector expecially if they make more money with the other segments. the same thing if you consider console vs games.
software house develope games first and better for ps3 and xbox because pc games get more pirated than console games.

In conclusion first desktop gpu than mobile gpu (maybe) :)

I looked some photos about huge gpu geforce Fermi and i think even desktop start to became a sort of "mobile" solution!!! :D

i'd like to pre-order this item too (gentech i think), but i've got just a question for you folks:

if i choose the dvdrw option (instead of the blu ray, so i can save 99$) can i RMA (i hope never!!!) this item directly to an asus service center here in italy or I HAVE to send it to the on-line shop ('couse of the warranty...)?

    thanks a lot

I was planning on pre-ordering through paypal soon once some extra money I've been waiting for clears into my account - here's hoping that's an isolated incident on your end but I'll let you know if I have any problems also (going to pay via e-cheque for the 3% discount on Gentech)

Do we international buyers qualify for this e-cheque discount? And is this e-cheque a paypal functionality or what?

echeck is Paypal where you link your bank account to Paypal so the money is automatically withdrawn. Domestic hold time is 5 days and international is 10 but I don't know if the discount still applies.

Only if you buy with Gentech, not xoticpc as the latter don't accept paypal on international orders (as far as I know anyway) and yes, by e-cheque I meant paypal e-cheque

And where do you get your magical figures for the 285M/385M?

I'm actually wondering if the g73 on show is a pre-production model, which means there may be changes before actual shipment.

How accurate has ATI's claims regarding the performance for its GPUs been in the past?

I played a bit with paypal yesterday and it seems you have to of course register your Bank account with paypal. After that, would we be able to qualify for e-cheque thingy, that I dont know yet. I will try tonight and post my failure/success

I think e-cheques work internationally so you should have no problem sending one from Europe - I'd suggest you contact Ken at gentech (just go to http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/ and click the 'customer service' link at the very bottom of the page) as he's been a huge help for me as I want to order to the UK

Nobody knows for sure since there are no results aside from those released by Asus and ATI.

That in turn, doesn't help very much as very little information is provided on the tests run. In addition, these are marketing figures, and may very well be inaccurate or erring on the generous side.

Hah, well ASUS has about one week to release an actual date before I bite the bullet on an NP8760. This card does look like a worthy gain over the 280m, so I would like to move to this instead... but I am guessing it will all be up in the air for more than a week :(

I'm simply suggesting the possibility. ;)

After all, we know the angels at ATI/Asus would never do such a thing now, would they?

    ^ Note, I'm being sarcastic.

I just don't see a point in getting excited over benchmarks released by the company releasing the product. Especially results that cannot be independently verified. Remember the 3dmark06 20K W90vp? Or Nvidia's claims about its GPUs in the past year or more.

I'm not convinced the decision to use Juniper was based on hardware limitations and not on cost.

It was cheaper to use Juniper and offer a performance increase over the Mobility 4850+ with just clocks then to design a GPU with more processors and a larger bus just for the mobile market.

Faster than the 280m by 20+%. Lower thermal footprint. The Ati chip is a winner. The rest of the laptop's design choices and features are the icing on the cake.

A lower thermal footprint is one of the most importent aspects of this card. I'll never forgive nvidia for selling me an overheating 8 series....

hahaha, yea, little long to go back and check the older posts. but it looks like asus THOUGHT about the cooling system in this laptop which gets me stoked for it, even tho i cant have it hahaha. oh well, we'll see how that cooling system pans out, cause ive seen a lot of broken promises and good ideas from asus in the past, but if i could sell my g71 and get the g73 i would in a heart beat.

Yea... Everyone was using G72 photos.. There posted everywhere.. My thoughts are that Asus probably wanted to make a big surprise splash at the 2010 CES, so they chose to keep the new design to themselfs.

    FYI.. Notebookcheck.com updated the HD 5870 specs to 128-bit.... You know you have a killer card when all of the comparisons around it are SLI;

Ok so those stats aren't a fair comparison at all if they use a desktop processor to achieve that score. If they did the same thing with a gtx 280m it would prob shatter that vantage score of 5k. sigh why can't they use real hardware so I can make an educated decision!! GRRR

Sheesh, one of the first time pictures of an ASUS laptop is a pro when considering to buy it. Plus, as mentioned above, those big, gaping vents make me happy. And I'm really hoping they stick with that matte finish. I don't want my laptop to look worse than a CSI crime scene. I also sincerely hope they don't stick some hideous sticker thing that some guy ASUS thought was cool after seeing a dragon ballz episode his kid was watching on TV.

Wait, they probably used the same processor for the GTX 280m, as well, right? So wouldn't it be a fair comparison? I'm not quite sure, just clarifying.

no man there is no way they did. Nvidia will use a fast chip aka an intel chip to have bragging rights. All ati has to do is beat the score with whatever hardware they want and claim the better score. Even if they have to use a desktop processor that can't be used in a laptop to get it. Totally lame if u ask me. I want real benchmarks with the darn lapptop not some mickey mouse rigged up machine to achieve a fake score.

Guess you're both right. This is pretty darn frustrating. I mean, I've wired the money, I'm getting the laptop regardless of what and disapointment ATi and Asus put me through but boy I would just love a straight up answer. This is frustrating, just going through 1200 posts of ups and downs.

"For reference, ATI uses a desktop system for the ATI vs. ATI charts and some form of Core 2 Duo 2.5GHz setup for the ATI vs. NVIDIA charts. This isn't really something fishy, considering there are as yet no laptops with the new ATI hardware and no one offers an identical laptop with support for both ATI and NVIDIA GPUs (well, Alienware has the m17x, but that's about as close as we get)"

This might seem a stupid question but why doesn't asus give 2 graphic cards. They do offer 2 cards in their 18 inch w90, is there such a big difference in size then? I know this is a cheap laptop compared to the m17x for example but the option of getting 2 cards would be very nice.

if you read the fine print they didn't even use a gtx 280m or a 240 in those tests. they took a 250 desktop and clocked it down to be like a 280m and took a 220 and clocked it down to be like a 250m.

Don't get me wrong man I want this laptop to be amazing just as much as anyone else. I've read all 1200 posts and done as much research as I can handle. I need a laptop and this one is the one I'm currently considering but I have a serious problem with these charts and I can't help but hesitate when I read things like this.
