I think it really depends on what your going to be using it for, where you will be using it, does it have to be mobile etc ... What are your needs.
I'm really picky. It took me a very long time to decide on my g51vx and if I had more options available I still might be sitting here deciding. The G73JH has A LOT of things I wanted in a laptop. The great keyboard (really like the function keys and back lighting), cooling system, sub-woofer, good placement of ports, and a great look that's not too flashy yet appealing. The screen is 16:9 and not too big or small. I haven't even mentioned the CPU/GPU. I think Asus really put thought into this one and listened to what the majority of people wanted in a powerful laptop. Great job there!
I wonder how competitors will react to the G73JH. This is going to be one heck of a ride this year!!

I think I might have to pull the trigger on this bad boy. Still a little confused with this the NP9280 or the AW m17x but this is high escalating in my books haha.

Still not convinced, eh?
For those interested, I have put together some G73JH info here.
(a continual work in progress)

Hi guys,
For all of us ordering from Canada , i've found a reseller in Canada:
http://www.ecsrv.com/ShopItem.aspx?SessionCode=042BB5A27CB640E083A908F004D68B81&CatCono=440293&ProductNo=4616651&Toc=440293:0&PageID=31296465
Unfortunatley it doesnt let you customize your laptop but just sells you the basic standard version (17.3Inch/FHD (1920x1080) /i7-720QM (1.60GHz Quad-Core)/8G DDR3/ATI 5870 1G GDDR5/BR-Drive). The price is
CAD $ 1,727.95 w/o Shipping/Tax (I think)
It still might be cheaper though to order from the US (=Gentech...) since their price is about CAD$1700 WITH shipping+taxes/duties -
how much faster do u guys think this comp will be vs the Gateway P-7811? Will it be a noticeable upgrade in performance?
I got 800 back from my dead p-7811 (get a warranty for laptops
) But I want a decent upgrade from what I had.
-
Probably 35-40% faster in GPU, ~33% faster in cpu on two cores. Way more on 4 cores.
-
Well, this laptop has 8gigs of ram, i7 CPU, and most importantly mobility 5870
.
From ur laptop it'll worth it, and so far ati has given us benchmarks and it has shown improvements over 280m gtx by 15% to 20%, can't rally say it for sure though since ati might be trickin us we gotta see when iAta goes to ces today again and run some benchmarks for us.
But from 7811 it's definitely worth it. -
AW and as far as I know Clevo, haven't announced any 5870 based products yet. The i7 M17x refresh that's due out soon should feature an RGB LED display. Asus and AW have vastly different build quality in general. The M17x in particular uses an aluminum case, high quality display and has the option for crossfire/SLi and comes with a superior at home warranty service. But the catch is it likely costs $500-$800 more than the G73. For the price, G73 is the one to beat right now and based on what iata has said, it seems the build is pretty decent as well. If I was on a budget, G73 would be my top pick.
-
i may be PM'ing you with regards to your thoughts on your planned purchase - given some of the previous posts i've read from you thus far. will be headed to iraq as well but hope to avoid having the wife send back/forth a laptop
-
next question is would you guys order this system with windows xp or windows 7?
-
Let Windows XP die, my friend. Win 7 64-bit is all that matters now.
-
Hmm, that would be interesting. Their first 16:9 17.3" RGB LED screen then. Any way of confirming that, Joker?(M6500/6400 uses 16:10 17.1" RGBLED. Wouldn't be surprised if HP 8740w used the same screen.
-
Definitely windows 7, hands down.
-
Unfortunately I have no way of confirming that so I should have qualified my post by saying it's rumored to be getting the RGB LED display. One poster in the AW forums that mentioned the M11x before CES started claims to know an AW source and so far his information's been solid. I think zfactor also spoke with someone he knows at Dell that told him it's coming: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5707444&postcount=84 -
Asus has a superb customer service... even here in iraq, you will get your RMA for here if needed. They will service you in Iraq with out question as all your warranty needs are covered as if you are where you purchased the machine at... IE the USA.
-
Bumping this back up.. really interested in a comparison.
iaTa no chance of 3Dmark06? -
The link has expired but nice find. That is a great price considering the G51j is only $100-$200 less (approx) and your getting quite an upgrade including double the ram and even bluray.
Not to mention everything else! Wow!

Clevo/Sager have maintained a tradition of SLI and the nVidia line. I would be surprised to see a CrossFire entry from them. Like last year, Asus was the first exclusively debuting ATI's flagship card, and if last year is any indication..... we may not see a Dell/AW CrossFire model until the Aug/Sept timeframe. The M17x made it's first appearance with SLI nVidia cards, and it was not until 3 months later we saw ATI X-Fire.
If, and when we see a Dell/AW model with X-Fire 5870's, this will certainly be my choice, but in the meantime, while I wait, I'M GONNA ENJOY THIS G73!

I have been reading this thread since it started, and I must say it is very impressive. I have never bought a laptop before, however this thread convinced me to preorder the G73 from XoticPC. Thanks Guys!!
I was interested in the below comment:
The price is much better than if I bought the laptop in the US and payed import taxes in Canada, however I have been unable to access the site. I would love to buy this laptop from Canada, does anyone know if there are any other sites selling?
My other option is to send the laptop to one of my work locations in the USA and drive down, however I would prefer not to do this. -
Aaah, after seeing this - I don't know if I should build my PC rig - or just buy this. Gentech delivers to UK too ... I already ordered the PSU/Case for the desktop though - can't decide. Only thing really holding me back on getting this system - is that it is so new and - I don't know the actual figures, when it comes to cooling/benchmarks and if there are any issues with the laptop.
-
Santech, the italian Clevo rebrander, has added a single 5870 or a single 360M to N56, their name for the W860CU. I think I'm gonna buy that laptop.

Except you're ignoring what's perhaps the strongest selling point of Arrandale: onboard graphics.
Onboard graphics means switchable graphics, which means a cooler computer and longer battery life, which is a very important thing for laptop users.
And the lower TDP helps, too. -

INTERESTING!
I'll be sticking with Asus on this new single GPU venture, but THANKS!

Hi guys,
New to the forum and I've been following this thread for the last few days. It just so happens I'm in the market for a new laptop after owning only one previously. I went through a nightmare before because my brand new hp turned into a paperweight after a little less than a year so I've been really doing my research this time around and this g73 seems like too good of a deal to pass up. It also seems like Gentech is THE place to order from which brings me to my 2 questions I'm hoping anyone could answer for me. I want to preorder this before the price goes up and I see they do not charge credit cards until the notebook is ready to ship but how does it work if you are using paypal? Also if anyone has ordered from Canada could you tell me how much extra they charge for customs? One last question on the tech side of things, sort of. How future proof would you say this notebook is? I'm thinking this rig should be able to handle any applications thrown its way for at least 2 years. Am I being a little too optimistic? Anyways GREAT forum and thanks in advance for any replies. -
For paypal, you do the E-cheque with them. It will draw the money from your bank account and deposit into the Paypal account and will sit there until Gentech retrieves it for shipment.
-
So what is coming with the i7-620 as of right now? It's not an option for the bigger laptops I didn't think.
-
The price is locked in at under $1700 so shouldn't rise any more post release (although it may be harder to get a hold of it judging by the current preorder volume) and also, paypal would take the money directly from your account - there's nothing you can do about that as it's the paypal system's way of doing things (or so I've been told).
-
No problem, sir.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Nothing that I know of yet. -
Well for the question about ordering from Canada, I live in US so I can't help you with that, but these 2questions I can help you with.
For the first question, Paypal is an instant payment. Once payment is sent, it's basically done. (it means you ARE in the line to be the first one to get the G73JH-A1)
and for the 2nd question, this model, G73, is often described as the new generation of ROG series. Not only it's good in performance but also DirectX 11 is available in this card, which means you are good at least for an year.
If you need a laptop right now, I would say this is it. I mean, right now it is a best bang for the buck. -
welcome to the forum. People are inclined to "jump" on a good deal because they feel that the price is going to go up or it will just go away. Neither of those things happen in this market. Prices only go down and availability will be there. The only thing you risk is having to wait longer. So if you are jumping on the laptop then do it because you need one and you think this is a great laptop. Don't jump before you actually want to because you are afraid it will become more expensive. That will never happen. Your screen name is a bit indicative of maybe not being ready to plop down 1800 bucks (after taxes, etc).
-
how can you say availability will be there? do you even know the history of the poor yield of the 5xxx series desktop cards? if the yield of the mobile line is anything as ridiculously low as the desktop line, then you can expect this thing to be put into backorder fairly quickly
-
I want one. I sure hope ASUS has any bugs worked out in advance. I do not want to go through the W90 mess that happened last year.
-
Or the BSOD mess that the G51J suffers
-
Nothing is ever perfect, just need to take a dive off the deep end every once and a while and hope your able to float back up. New products come out all the time and 90% of the time, have little bugs and quirks. Have no fear though, the group of people here is top notch like no other, with a vast array of knowledge. Any little bug or quirk that comes up, rest assured that everyone here will do all they can to work it and solve it.

Here's an off topic question for you guys, if I were to paint my top cover of my notebook, would that void the warranty it comes with?
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Hmmmmm, I wouldn't think personalizing would void the warranty.... afterall, paint schemes & skins are quite common. I'd have to slice & dice through Asus's warranty policy on this one, but I don't think so.
Perhaps we have a reseller in the house?
I'm gonna leave mine STEALTHy! ..... you don't like stealthy?
-
I love the design, but also, be in US Army Aviation, more specifically MEDEVAC, my heart will always be here in MEDEVAC no matter what I end up doing or where I go. I have some many "memories" if you will, and I want to design me a custom paint scheme to reflect it myself.
-
Man why would you ditch the stealthy awesomeness!
-
I don't think that will cause a conflict as some resellers have custom paintjobs available.
-
soulution is My tengo its a custom skin making site

Hi, I preordered this laptop for myself the first day it was available. But I have a question this is my first gaming laptop, I come from Apple computers that have a good resell value how is the resell of these computers considering they are considered outdated so fast?
-
If you look on ebay many of the gaming laptops are not available at all. Seems people hold onto them and upgrade them. My G50VT has received a new CPU and a Bluray drive. I'm still trying to decide on this new system or a refurb alienware (assuming they have the model I want available). Seems true gaming laptops hold their resale well. Not like a random Dell model.
I also am primarily a Mac user for work and general web surfing, documents etc. My ASUS machine is strictly gaming only. The only programs on it are Windows 7, Mcafee and my games. I have bootcamp on my iMac and my uMBP for gaming when I'm away on business but really prefer to play on the ASUS connected to my 24" Samsung.
Cheers, -
unfortunately, PC's have a lower resell value stastically over MAC's
Pains me to say that!!
-
where is a list of resellers? cant seem to find a list through the search.
I want to buy this, I live in California so it cant be one there due to tax. also i know about Xoticpc
thanks -

I personally will recommend GentechPC, I have been talking with ken now for the past 2 weeks and he is extremely fast and very pleasent to deal with. The other 3 I have not talked with so I couldn't tell you how they are.
