Have we figured out where the air intake is yet? I can't seem to find it in any of the video closeups of it.

The intakes are in the front of the notebook on the bottom side.

actually, from the video we saw, they are right about where the graphics card is on the bottom. the "vent" looking thing in the front is actually a subwoofer this time. Not a fake intake vent a la G51. IMO this was a good move, as Soviet pointed out to me before that the air would already be warm by the time it hit the GPU if they were pulling it in from the front. If they are pulling it directly onto the GPU from outside it'll result in much cooler GPU temps. Seems to be one over the CPU and one over the GPU.

I re-watched the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH9nAytIRlY&feature=related video and I don't see any kind of vents on the bottom anywhere. Well, there are a couple tiny ones, but those look like the ones you'd typically see near the RAM.

edit: Well I guess it could pull from the larger one in the dead center (where the ram probably is)

i can't wait to see real benchmarks of ati mobility 5870 from this ASUS. I don't trust the graph comparision between 5870 and 280m from AMD says 25% faster than 280m. Any news comming laptops equipped dual 2x5870 ?

Ah, I didn't see that video, travitar. It looks like Asus changed their pre-production design yet again on me. From the video, it appears that the intakes are over the CPU and the GPU this time as EIement stated. This design is much more efficient compared to the original paper designs as there are several slotted intakes over a large area that won't pose as a bottleneck for the fans. Also, incoming CFM will flow over the component heatsinks before being sucked into the fan and spewed into the radiator, meaning that CFM is being used on the pull to and on the push from the fan, which is similar to how desktop CPU tower heatsinks are going these days; utilizing pull and push airflow through the heatsink. Just imagine the flexibility in modding the G73. The G73 looks like it has plenty of clearance: more room for taller heatsinks and less turbulence for the fans. Asus finally played their trump card.

I'm about 20 pages behind and catching up fast....however i was wondering if we had any new benchmarking or comparison information on the 5870. Or if we were able to get some results that we can compare from iaTa's recon work?

Could you tell me where you found your copper? I need a 1mm thick copper plate to upgrade my 8600m gt to an ati hd4650 which can run cod mw2 at max settings with +-21 fps ^^ (according to a guy who already did the upgrade) By the time I get sick of that card asus might offer 2ghz corei 7's for +-1500€ :p
Also, which tools are good for cutting the copper?

I didn't use a copper plate, tho I will be using ~1mm copper shims on my northbridge and some copper plates on my HDDs in my G51. @striker I know I won't need to, but I'll want to anyways! cooler is always better, and I want my G73 to have a little character =]

iaTa, could you also post your general impressions of your CES experience? How were the build quality (parts fitting) and keyboard/touchpad response?

Could you feel much heat coming out of the rear vents? Any hot spots that you could feel?

    Great posts btw. + rep!

Asus g73 with usb 3.0 no problem!

In case anyone was in doubt, USB 3.0 is a lot faster than the current 2.0 version. And another certainty: USB 3.0 is now available to consumers on laptops from HP and Asus, among others.

USB is also more power efficient than 2.0. "This uses one-third of the power it would take on USB 2.0," said Jeff Ravencraft, president of the USB Implementers Forum, in an interview at CES. "And it's backward compatible," he said, meaning it can also handle peripherals that use older USB standards.
Also, cards that go into a laptop's ExpressCard slot are available, Ravencraft said. This allows an existing laptop to be upgraded to 3.0.

If those vents on the bottom middle are final this might be additionally good for some modders. It looks like they are on a small removable panel that gives access to the removable hard drives maybe?(guessing here). So if people wanted to enlarge the vents (Forges drill on standby) you would only be dealing with the one small panel which hopefully could be easily replaced.

The Hm55 chipset in the G73 does not support USB3.0, and as far as I can tell it doesn't have an express slot either.

why cant we get a straight answer on the vent? iata or somebody needs to go drop a bag of flour or talcom powder in front of it and watch where it gets sucked into. yes im sure you would be carted off to jail, but at least then we would know, alot of jails have internet, you could post the answers from there.

just think of the rep power you would get on this forum! :D

what if the subwoofer and air intake were one in the same, i think they could do that, then you would also have bass coming from behind which would also help mask the fans. just a thought.

A couple years back, I made a custom cooling plate for my now old XPS M170 laptop, I got my copper from http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=155&step=2&top_cat=87 , the link is for their "copper sheet sample pack" , it includes several thicknesses in 4"by 4" plates. I still typing from my M170 :p , it still plays some of the current games (playing Borderlands lately), but it does so at lower resolutions... What a leap in peformance the G73JH would be over the M170 hu? lol!

I asked about the military discount at Xoticpc. They replied it was $35 off but not inconjunction with the free shipping in US (worth $37), so one or the other. So in US and not in hurry- take free shipping. Out of US or in hurry - take military discount. Of course the Xoticpc guy can clarify or correct this.

The powerbrick that comes with the laptop should, key word SHOULD, have an automatic voltage regulator built in to automatically convert. I HIGHLY recommend reading the brick when you receive it to see its voltage rating. but my old Asus A7T is rated 100-240v which means it will work for either. At most, you may have to go down to your local hardware store and buy an adaptor to fit 220 plugs with a 110 style plug.

LOL, trust me it did cross my mind!!

That was such an amazingly cool setup - I played on it for an hour!

Sorry I've been so long guys. Another crazy night. Ended up in Spearmint Rhino with the lead hardware developer for Dell Latitude LOL! He was one crazy dude.

Didn't get time to do much yesterday (by the way Joker, Dell cancelled their CES booth at the last minute - what gives?! - but I have asked my new buddy at Dell to find out for you :)).

I did post my thoughts about build quality a few pages back. It's very solidly built and the palm area doesn't get hot at all. Everything sort of screams Stealth Bomber funnily enough - it's very well put together. Keyboard is fine as I remember. The right back air vent got pretty hot when I ran Furmark so the GPU must be on the right, but the way it's designed means the heat is kept quite a way from the working area.

Not sure if I'm going to make it to CES today but whenever I do I will try and run 3DMark. Actually now I think about it something funny did happen when I ran the gaming benchmarks of PCMark Vantage (has no one compared those scores yet by the way?) in that the Core i7 throttling gadget seemed to lock the CPU at a slow speed whilst the bench was running. Could this be another throttling problem like in the Dell Core i7's? I don't really know enough about the problem.

Howdy, I'm new here and I too pulled the trigger and preordered one of these bad boys 3 days ago from xotic. I've been following this thread since about page 100 and I've researched my options to death. I will say that if it is indeed March before there is sufficient quantities I'll probably pull the plug and go with the Sager 8760 (Which is what I initially was considering.) I really hope they don't take that long as the Sager is about 450$ more for about the same thing really, with the only promise of build quality and Nvidia's drivers. Besides this thing looks awesome!!! :D

No, It does not. go look it up lol. the entire reason unclewebb is involved is BECAUSE it throttles the CPU as well. the Throttlestop program and the Rivatuner fix are unrelated, but BOTH need to be used on the M15X.

Been lurking around the boards for some time now. Can't believe how many pages I've read so far.

But I couldn't resist, just placed my pre-order with GenTech today. Can't wait until an official release date is announced.

Will be going tomorrow though for sure. The only place it can possibly suck air in is the keyboard (doubtful) or the big vents in the centre of the base (most likely IMHO).

Regarding performance of GPU I've given you some benchmarks!

Furmark was 15 fps on 1080p Xtreme Burntest.

PCMark Vantage Gaming Benchmark results @ 1280 x 960 were as follows:

    Gaming suite
    Gaming Suite 6076.00
    Gaming 1 43.48
    GPU gaming 43.477 FPS
    Gaming 2 10.44
    HDD - gaming 10.441 MB/s
    Gaming 3 3813.97
    CPU gaming 17610.682 operations/s
    Data decompression 825.998 MB/s
    Gaming 4 135.26
    GPU gaming 17.839 FPS
    CPU gaming 13337.052 operations/s
    HDD - gaming 10.401 MB/s

Now we just need a comparison!

I will try and get 3DMark06 but it might be difficult as it's such a large download and the wireless connection is really slow on the ASUS stand.
