Are we really sure what the weight on the G73 is? The resellers are showing it as 8.5 lbs.
This post which the poster said was from Asus World Magazine Jan and Feb 2010 showed it at 3.99 kg with one HDD. (I don't know how much a second HDD weighs)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=449206
Striker's post also shows the same 3.99 kg with one HDD under the G73 Ultimate Portable Gaming Companion heading. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=447140
But on the same page it shows it as 3.4 lbs under ASUS R.O.G. G73Jh Specifications heading. (Sorry for the links and not screen shots or images. I don't know how to post them.)
If my conversion is correct 3.4 kg is 7.5 lbs and 3.99 is 8.8 lbs. (both of these state with one HDD). So we have three different weights so far.
I am watching the weight because I hoped to use it on my lap, but it seems to be growing like the Hulk. I don't guess the extra half a pound to pound will matter. I just don't want to have to yell "spot" to get it off of me to get up from the recliner.

I know, many of the sites list 1xExpressCard 34/54 slot, but most of those sites list xoticpc or some other reseller as source who i think did not have any detailed specs from ASUS, apart from the core components
ASUS's own specs:
Don't list it and in can't be spotted in the close up videos of every angle of the machine posted by iaTa
So, i know you asked for no speculation, but my guess is that there's none, which kinda sucks as no hope for USB 3.0 expansion -
according to spec page, it weights 3.5 kg!

The G73 weighs the same as my W870CU, ~4kg, but it has a larger footprint. I'm guessing some of the weight comes from the new eight cell battery. Also, most users are saying that this is with only one HDD so the notebook will weigh even more with another HDD in the second bay. If Asus is using the same 120W PSU as the previous G series notebooks, then it should be relatively smaller compared to my PSU, but not by much.
It seems that Asus is throwing around a lot of numbers. Either that or I'm falling behind on my G73 digest. I should lend a G73 owner my scale to see how much it really weighs. -
I don't think this has been discussed, but ASUS specs state the battery is an 8-cell Li-ion, 71.4WHrs
so, this means at full load when it consumes 120watts of power, it'll only run for only ~.6hrs or 36 minutes!
any idea how much it would consume on low-power state?
Also, isn't 120watts insufficient power? The m15x has a 150watt PSU and to my understanding, its facing some power issues when trying to overclock..
I know the TDP of the MR5870 is lower, but this also has a 17.3 inch screen.. -
That's quite a lot. 3 kg is about my personnal limit but since this is more of a dekstop replacement I could live with it. Does anybody know how much the current asus G7* series weigh?
-
What will be the expected/estimated 3DMark score of the G73?

No machine runs at the PSU's rated 120Wh output constantly. Second, the battery cannot output anything near 120Wh or else it will melt or blow up. If that were true, then my three cell ~42Wh battery would theoretically only last 21 minutes. Performance notebooks use a lower power state to prevent overdraw from the battery such as restricting the CPU and GPU. Battery cells die very quickly when subjected to high current draw as some of that current that is drawn from the battery is expended as heat. -
Since we are on the topic of specs such as size and weight. I was wondering, and perhaps Iata or someone else that has actually touched the holy grail can comment.
The specs say 22.1 mm at it's thickest point. Looking at the pics it looks to be about the thickness of a brick. Which is fine, however the specs say...in inches
22.1 millimeters = 0.87007874 inches
Is it really less than an inch thick? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
$100 says no. Less than an inch thick is a load of bollocks. It's definitely a typo.
-
MasqueradingTeabag Notebook Consultant
I'd pay 100 bucks to have it less than an inch.
ASUS are really going out of their way to keep the mystery levels pertaining to this laptop high.
Quite honestly, less than an inch. I wouldn't even won't that. More breathing space the better, in my opinion; unless this two fan, weird cooling system thing is worth what it seems to be advertising.... -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Amen. It really depends on how far in the tech literacy spectrum one wants to target, but as for the majority of those in the mainstream sheep group, it's mostly because of the failure to research. As for those in the deep end of the spectrum that have almost no knowledge of technology, let alone knowledge of performance notebooks, like I was a long time ago, they are either just really rich, perfectionist, lazy, and so on.
I don't think the card will be released for the existing G51's, but rather for the succeeding models. -
Actually, that was a nice bit of work there. It reinforced that I was not missing something which was part of my concern. Thanks for sharing.

The ASUS G73JH-A1 uses a 150 Watt AC Adapter.
The weight at this point is purely a guess. Manufacturers usually advertise weights about half a pound less than the real weight for some reason, but until we can actually put one on our calibrated digital scale we won't know for sure. My best guess is that with two hard drives and the 8 cell battery it will come in at over 9 pounds, plus about another pound for the AC Adapter. -
Hey guys this isnt so much a question about this laptop as it is about all newer laptops. Have they figured out a way to not kill your battery when it is plugged into the wall. The gateway I have now is always plugged in and the battery slowly died to the point where it has no charge and wont charge anymore. So is it still advisable to unhook the battery when plugged into the wall?

Good info Soviet!

Hi guys can somebody verify the video ports of the G73 because the pics show a normal VGA connector but the Spec sheet posted above (post #2263) specify MINI VGA? Does it also have HDMI?
-
Any word on 3DMark06 scores?
-
None. iAta exploded the only known G73 in existence at CES trying to run that test. Since this mobile 5870 is confrimed to be based off the desktop 5750/5770, it will probably be very close to those numbers.

The destruction of the only G73 was a conspiracy. The KGB is covering it up investigating this.

So I went and updated my order today. I dropped the blu-ray player and opted for regular DVD combo, but I also dropped 1 HDD for the 80gb SSD
-
How can you drop the BlueRay drive on a laptop with a FullHD LED screen and the EAX 4.0? That's madness... that's... Sparta!
-
im not a big movie watcher, I got my Xbox360 I watch movies on my 47" tv at home when im not blowing faces off on CoD
-
I gotta reiterate, this is one good looking machine.
-
I also dropped the blu-ray. I already have a PS3/TV for that stuff. You can always convert BR to mkv and watch it that way. I also have the 80GB intel SSD and that will make the machine much faster.
-
That was a brilliant choice! You are not gonna BELIEVE how fast an ssd drive is. Especially that Intel drive they offer, which is pretty much the best of the best. I had one in my G51 I returned and will be slapping it in the G73! I'm with you on the BluRay. If I start to travel again for work (unlikely), I would consider adding it later on, but it would not get much use if I had it.
-
Indeed, SSD is the way to go. I have a Vertex turbo in my 5 year old laptop and it feels like a new machine. Just not enough for me to not want a new machine lol. I will be putting it in the g73 when i get it. I talked to my reseller in canada and they are giving me a preorder price of 1789 before shipping, which should be alot cheaper then getting one from the US and paying the customs and brokerage on it.

According to the mobile reference boards out the memory bus is indeed 128bit (2x64) which does NOT hamper performance due to the GDDR5 memory so either way this card will rule supreme, only beaten by GTX 280 SLI.

We regret to inform you, but we received an update from Asus today. The ETA for the Asus G73JH-A1 has been pushed back to the middle/late part of February.
-
Well I guess I have a few more weeks to save up
-
dang : ( i just want the benchmarks for the 5870! that would tide me over
-
thats not as bad as i thought it would be, I was thinking more along the lines of march,
just out of curiosity, what would benefits of 256bit paired with ddr5 be compared to 128bit with ddr5 be? -
About what we all expected I think! Not too bad, just gives people more time to save up some cash!
-
Santech still says that shippings will start January the 28th, so maybe, the first benchmarks of a i7-hd5870 will be from a Clevo/Santech laptop.
-
There are 2 Justin's at Xotic so it can sometimes confuse people ...
-
ahhhhhh ok, just wierd, first time ive seen that justin post here, so I was a bit confused and bewildered by it. Editing post now.
-
More likely, they haven't gotten the memo from ASUS yet and will be shipping at the same time everyone else is shipping
.
-
Roland@XoticPC Company Representative
Haha, it's no problem. As Quadzilla said, there are two Justin's at Xotic PC.
-
you have my applogies, can never be too sure as it would be easy to impersinate.
-
WAH........... WHAT?!
-
Well it would give a lot more memory bandwidth. But to be honest, the Mobility 5870 (128-bit GDDR5) has 64GB/s which is sufficient given the cards overall specs and power.
-
In crossfire !!!
very powerful.
So roughly 1 month for release, thats not too bad! -

To be just a mite more precise, the scheduled arrival date in the US ASUS warehouse is February 23rd. Now, being precise with ASUS arrival dates takes a Crystal Ball and a little magic dust, neither of which are currently available so take it with a small grain of salt because there are several things that could delay it, or even move it up sooner.
Patience will be the order of the day... -

WOW! No Express slot..... something strikes me wrong about this..... LOL, did Asus forget this?
-
So heres a question... do you think this laptop will be able to run ff14 decently when it comes out?
-
Those are always tough questions to answer because no one knows how well the game will run in general even on the most beastly systems.. If i were to venture a guess though i would say it should run just fine at native res...
Releasing any game these days with super high system requirements is just suicide so you should be fine if you get the G73 ... -
Yes just confirmed with Asus there is no Express slot.
-
I guess Asus does not feel Gamers need an Express slot for what ever reason that may be ... I myself have no need for one but im sure there are a few on here that will say otherwise
...

Hmmmm, I am thinking more along the lines of PPPP by the design team, and it got rushed.....anyhow, so much for the perfect road-warrior DTR, LOL!
