GDDR3 5850 with 75mhz lower core clock, 200mhz lower Memory clock than full GDDR3(800mhz from 1000mhz) and 128bit bus with a core i7 720....P5100@ 1280x1024. GDDR5@1000mhz (equates to 2,000mhz GDDR3) I think we'll see a rather sizable performance upgrade over the 260m/280m.
oh and 8500 3DMark06 at those same speeds. so I'm expecting 12,500-13,000 stock @ GDDR5.

Seriously? My laptops are used primarily for work (game at night when on the road). The express card is much needed for me as I use my aircard a lot. My G71V-Q1 WAS going to be replaced by this, but not having an expresscard slot is a major inconvenience. I don't like USB aircards as they have a tendency to break. In addition, I have a 2 port eSATA card that I use with some of my external HDDs.
-
Yes it's confirmed that G73Jh does not have ExpressCard slot unfortunately, don't really know why they do that.
-
that seem sort of a strange thing to not include in a laptop of this magnitude.
-
Maybe its another tactic they used for cost reduction/performance messurments to ensure users get the best they can at a very affordable price. This laptop at its size is not meant to be lugged around all over the green earth. Its primiary target is the desktop replacement market for those that dont want to have that and can move it around their house with them.
-
agreed. It's in just about everyone I've seen
I guess I must not be part of their target market

Depends, what are you looking for. Do you want a computer you can easily carry around with you in travels or studies? Or are you looking for something that has some portability but primiarily will be using it in your home where you will have all the amenities needed and will not need a PCI Express slot...
This laptop is one you can take places with you to go gaming with buddies at a LAN party or something like that, not really meant to be hauled to class on a daily basis nor used as a real business type of laptop. If your looking for portability and business type, maybe the UL series is more your taste. This is for the serious long gaming sessions or the LAN parties at buddies houses on the weekends or something. -
Is it me or has it been always some unpleasant surprise with this system since it has been announced. Come on Asus. All the cool guys (drake, quad, moo, striker even vic and many I didn;t name) jumped to this thread. Give them something to be excited about. Or they will all move to AW M17x refresh thread and this computer will be old news when it actually comes out.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
you forgot about me.
-
Given how much HYPE this laptop has received and the announced delay, it feels old already.

LOL! TOO FUNNY alitunay! Thanks for including me in the cool kids club..... but for me, truth be known, If Dell/AW does a 5870 X-Fire model, this notebook will be history...... and THAT will be more exciting for a little while, anyhow. (and I'll bet they don't forget the Express slot!)
[huh? I thought alitunay was in the cool kids club? [scratch'in head]]
-
I'm starting to think the M17x refresh will be released before this.
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Well if it's an X-Fire refresh, watch how fast I booger outta here!
-
Still need one of the "cool kids" to own this model to compare.
-
I feel sorry for the reseller guys who thought they were going to be selling many of these systems. Don, you would be the coolest buy if the benches started falling on this system where you would compare it to all nvidia GPU starting 8800 series. For some reason I have a feeling that Xfire with these GPUs would be problematic just like Xfire on M17. It worked great with the 4870s but I am not seeing a big leap on GPU power with the 58 series GPUs. Also I am really surprised that Nvidia is coming up with the 300 series GPUs where 200 series are only 6 mnths old. I took 2 years for us to get from 7800 to 8800. I guess we will see a real jump towards to the end of the year.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
lol. i will try......
i didn't see a problem with crossfire on the m17/whitebook only with the 4850 got put in there with a quad but it was a power issue or the motherboard limitation. correct me if i am wrong. -
And there is no guarantee that the new card will work without issues with the new setup. i7 draws alot of power. In such a beast it shouldn;t be an issue but who knows. I have a M17 right now and when I first saw this, I was going to jump on it. Now I am getting an Envy 15 which you can actually use on your lap and carry around without a backache.
I am very doubtful about this new cooling system with this asus. Getting air from the bottom is nothing new and especially with those tiny grills we may see bunch of burned 5870s. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
If a X-Fired 5870 model releases, will you REALLY care?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
according to this vantage gpu run. it is equal to the 9800m gtx stock. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
I disagree, but no biggie..... you go be the Envy!
-
It is funny but my only problems with ASUS computers is the keyboard they use (in all models) and the sticker they have on the CPU that says warranty void if removed. Other than that, who know, next thing you know I may have 10 of these.
-
I haven't purchased a G73 yet because I too was considering an ENVY 15 but whoever is considering an ENVY 15 better do a lot of homework because HP is still trying to work out a serious BIOS issue regarding their i7 multiplier. I guess while the Envy is on battery it only functions at a 7x multiplier which translates to 931mhz... You think Asus is going to have this kind of problem?
-
Only thing that will stop me from buying it would be continued delays... I am still interested but mainly because its affordable and packs alot (hopefully
) of power for the $$$ .... As they say though We shall see ...
Were going to know all the benchmarks temps etc before any of us actually has one of our own... Or atleast i hope we do
..
-
For sale on eBay am I right?
I agree, M17x refresh with x-fire will be a monster..I can't wait!
-
that tho, is with GDDR3 and a lowered core 10% lower core clock so I'd expect a fair bit higher performance with GDDR5 and full clocks.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yeah it should break 6k easy with the faster memory/clock and the faster core clock the 5870 has.
-
I don't think so, Santech/Clevo has nothing to spare with ASUS, thus I don't see the reason why it should get postponed.
Ok, so, as I was thinking, the ACER 8942G is crap. -
I'm skeptical of the new cooling system as well. Two fans to cool the CPU and GPU? Great idea. Suffocating those fans with a grill that's too small? Fatal mistake.
Of course, Asus specifically designed this laptop to be cooler than the G7 and G5 series, so hopefully I'm wrong.
I hope this thing is quiet too... else I'd have probably purchased a Sager NP 8690 by now. -
this seriously sucks, I hope they make something like a express adapter for the CD rom drive. In my case I use the express slot every day, the cdrom only once every 6 months....
This will also lock us out of any tv tuner card, USB3 cards etc etc.
For me this is a blocking issue. -
Wat?
How could it be possible? o.o" -
How about USB? LINK
-
This no express slot is a problem for me also I really would like to add a tv tuner and a usb one is not going to work I hate those. Well I guess it cant have everything, but it does seem like every other day there is something else that makes me start looking again at other laptops. I have hope, but as the days go on and the date for this thing is not clear more options are coming out and this may hurt sales.
-
Well, not the most usable thing in the world. :/
And it won't resolve the totally lack of USB 3.0 ports. -
Would the esata port not suffice? I am not sure how fast it is compared to usb 3.0 but it should be decent.
-
I'm assuming if HP identified this as a bios issue setting your cpu frequency to maximum while on battery doesn't fix this.
-
For 2500.00 plus... That will price it out of the range for most of the people here that have pre-ordered this.
I have read nothing in the last 2 days that is making me re-think my pre-order. Alienware won't come close to the value this thing is providing. Sure, it will out-perform it with Crossfire just as a Sager refresh will, but so what? I'm not spending that kind of money on a laptop. -
Alienware has a higher likelyhood of having issues IMO - like DPC spikes causing audio stuttering.
-
Well like my current asus tablet, R1F, the cd tray can be used for a cd/dvd, additional SATA harddrive or battery. I'd imagine a SATA to expresscard chip would exist....but if that is feasible??

Ditto that -
DAMMIT only 1 pound heavier than G51? I always buy hardware at the worst possible time! Question: Do you guys think it is risky buying a laptop upon the initial release of the model? I'm thinking it's like cars, there are bound to be defects in the first MY...
-
My total is less than 1700 dollars. If I wanted to get an Alienware close to the same specs it would be 3000+ dollars.
Thank you Asus.
Mod NOTE: Keep it appropriate and NBR friendly. Also see the forum rules. -
Regardless wether its first release, or final release, there is always risks taken when buying any peice of technology just like a car.I dont feel there is any right or wrong time, just when you personally feel is the right time to buy.
-
Correct because Asus systems haven't experienced as many issues recently.
-
I guess the G51-J BSOD and Asus W90 problems have been buried in the back of their minds
Denial can be potent.
-
Well I am playing the market ..
-
Well it is known that cars have higher defects in the first MY, I was just wondering if it's the same with laptops... I wouldnt know because I only recently got involved with the mobile side of the things.
-
Lol your in denial... It will be more but the Alienware offers much more
-
It's at the front of my mind, trust me! I just sent my G51 back to ZipZoom! haha I am holding out hope that this issue won't repeat (or any issue for that matter).
As far as I've heard Alienware is the cream of the crop from everyone who has ever bought one. I'm the type of person though that refuses to buy the highest especially in name out of principle. It's the same reason I will never buy Sony Tv's, Bose home audio, or Lucky jeans! lol -
Heh, same here!
my usually not having enough money to buy them is totally unrelated though
