That's a possibility too, but there would need to be a whole lot of space between the entry and exhaust points if a design like that were to be used. The notebook would just keep recycling it's own exhaust if Asus used a design like that.

Well maybe one was an intake and one an exhaust then. I remember that the left exhaust was always very cool, but I assumed that was because it was for the CPU and I was only ever loading the GPU.
I wish I'd taken the bottle of talc now -
-
Haha well order one then put it through its paces to show everyone what this machine is truly capable of then sell it 30 days later... Even if you get the M17x refresh you will get bored no matter what so this is a nice backup to that and more so something else to just putz with...

and i think we ALL wish you had taken the talc!! -

im totally taking out that plastic piece thats screwed in with the vents and redoing it to let more air in. IF the design ends up being as flawed as it looks.
-
Considering the real estate on this baby, its kind of bare bones as far as connections go.
1 x HDMI
1 x VGA
1 x Ethernet
4 x USB
1 x Headphone (S/PDIF?)
1 x Mic
1 x Memory card slot
Shame no express card slot, esata, firewire...ect. I have feeling, Asus might release a refesh later with more connectivity/options. Anyone notice the blocked off round port on the back where it looks like something could go. Maybe a TV tuner or perhaps they intended the power to go there originally. At first I was hoping that rectangular area in the back was a panel that would open to expose more connections but that was wishful thinking. Its probably access for something else component related.
Cant wait till People get these things for the real on hands testing/abuse -
I put my M17 on eBay. If it sells I'll just break down and do the preorder. -

pm'd with info...

Doesnt the AW M17X front speaker grills also double as intake vents? If so then Asus could have incorporated this into the subwoofer design on the G73 as well.
-
Nope those are speakers and the lights only...

Holy Shnikies...There is a lot of good and garbage in this thread. Can't wait for the arrival. I have considered jumping ship due to delays and the fact that my desktop and laptop are gone via eBay. Ready to get something new yesterday.
The Best Buy G72 looks appealing at $1000
-mackloon -
The G72 has a bad cooling system from what someone said earlier in this thread. Although the price is very very good haha.
-
Well, not really bad but less effective than the supposed cooling in the G73
-
I'd rather get the new gateway fx series (7915u) than the g72(bestbuy version).
7915u FX has a cooling system on both CPU and GPU, and GTX 260m is Not underclocked while g72 is, also fx has a outstanding battery life.
I gotta admit though, some parts feel cheap in 7915u fx, but still better for gaming, in my personal opinion.
The only thing good in the g72 is the screen and the HD.
I'm not criticizing ASUS nor Gateway. They both are good deals. -
what are some good/quiet cooling pads that would pair with this laptop?

The Zalman NC-2000 looks like a good one too

I'm not saying asus cooling system is horrible nor build quality is bad, but you're overreacting. -
Yeah AW machines are top notch. I'm interested to see how the M17x refresh will stack up with this laptop. Alienware cooling is the best right now, its good to see Asus actually advertising the cooling system. After owning a laptop that needs no external cooler that seems kind of key to me, a 17.3" laptop on top of a huge cooler is nothing you want in your lap trust me.

Hey everyone, new to the forum...decided to make an account because I'm pretty excited about this lappy. I've been trying to get caught up with the posts, but I haven't ran in to much info in terms of a Canadian reseller. I was considering pre-ordering from Gentech or Xotic, but paying duty scares me (although I have no idea if this would get smacked by customs or not).
My question is, does anyone have any info on Canadian resellers carrying this model? If not, have any Canadians pre-ordered a laptop from a U.S. reseller in the past and been slammed with duty once it arrived? (or maybe this question is best directed to a different thread??) Thanks in advance though -

You shouldn't have to worry about Duty, but you will pay any applicable GST and PST, and if you use UPS Canadian Standard you will pay brokerage. If you use a UPS expedited service the brokerage is included.

Have you seen or touched a new aw ?
Because mine is a solid cast aluminum shell and cooling any Asus has hoped to have.
That extra money wasn't wasted it was put into things like cooling and warranty. It's why some one comes to my house next day to fix it instead of sending it off -
Untill alienware gets these unfair costs under control they can be sure I'll go for the asus.
Edit: Just checked again, when you pick the ati hd 4870 on the american site it will costs 2200 dollars, which is 1500 euros. -
No I haven't there aren't any showrooms in OZ unfortunately but its highly debatable whether that next day warranty is as "next-day" as you purport it to be (especially when you're not in US or Taiwan or wherever the major parts are manufactured), regardless paying twice as much money for better cooling when cooling is not an actual issue with an asus design, (as mentioned I have not found any fried GPU's in my research up to buying g51 and afterwards), is not sufficient to make asus laptops a REAL waste of money. But hey it's nice having a BMW just for the badge I guess, whatever makes you happy.
-
It's about having superior quality. The alienware m17x will give you the best performance, if you can afford it.
Bmw is all about the superior driving experience. Just like alienware is all about the superior gaming experience.
You don't pay more because of the brand, you pay more because it gives you more. A cheap car, or a cheap laptop might last just as long, but its the overal experience and joy that you are paying for when buying expensive products. -
As an Alienware owner I do have to say that their laptops are hard to beat when it comes to build quality, design and cutting edge performance BUT I have also got to say that ASUS with the new G73JH with the 5870 have made leaps and bounds in pushing out a performance laptop that I for one am looking forward to.
Of course I think everyone is still curious what comes from cooling, build quality and sustainability from this laptop but for now I am sold in this being a massive success and a great achievement for a low price tag.
On a related note, I have a 9750M for sale if someone is interested. Starting at around $500 (SLI 7950/4GB/160GB with backpack) -
www.Greytech.com
I couldn't find under which category it was listed, bit if you search for "g73jh" it shows up and the price is also pretty close to american price.
you can try it out, although, if the duty isnt an issue i suggest you go with one of the american resellers here as you can customise the config and add after-market thermal compound
Edit: here's a direct link to the g73jh page : http://www.ecsrv.com/ShopItem.aspx?...&ProductNo=69017&Toc=220146:0&PageID=31498854
for some reason they had two listings, this one had a detailed description and photo, also $25 more expensive for some reason -

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Alienware has made a big recovery ever since Dell bought them back in 2008. Their new notebook lineup is one of the best on the market again and have regained the trust of the enthusiast community to the level from when they used to use rebadged Clevo's back in 2005.
Everyone in this thread knows that the G73 will deliver much more than the previous G series notebooks did. It's a matter of how much improvement the G73 has over it's predecessors. Some people are praying for a huge improvement, some people will be just fine with temps that will just be safe. But when March comes, just know that the G73 will be launched as a properly (though not superiorly) cooled notebook for an affordable price.
Now if you want to be a jerk, please read the manual before trying to be one. You're doing it wrong. If need help trying to be one, feel free to PM me. -

by the way it's being a bogan, that's how we tag the buggers here in down under....
-
Hey Moo. What are your thought comparison between this and the M17x since you had one. I know you don't have the G73 yet but I noticed your sig changed and was wondering why you wanted this over the AW?
