On another note, my G51JH-A1 was RETURNED TO SENDER yesterday! I had shipped this time-bomb back to ZipZoomFly because I was within the 30 days, got an RMA, and was afraid it was only a matter of time before it exploded on me. Apparently something happened in delivery and they sent it back to me. I think I am going to hold on to it to help test out the issues it is having. To be honest, I never had the 124 Blue-Screen. I had the issue where the whole laptop turns itself off while gaming if you have the laptop lid closed while connected to an ext. display. I think I will just hold on to it and use it as a secondary laptop when my G73 ships to me. Maybe I will sell it then, but I had been pretty happy with it besides the shutdown issue. It's an easy fix anyway by leaving the laptop lid open while gaming on an ext. monitor.

It's still the only i7 dual GPU option available until the x8100 is released.

Actually I wish the G73 was already released to see if waiting for the 5870 is worth it.

4870x2 vs 5870..no contest. You might as well order the M17x refresh as soon as EPP goes live. You'll have it in your hands before G73 even ships out to resellers. Besides, 16:10 RGB LED... ;)

The X8100 is going to be nice. A 920XM/twin GTX 285M notebook will keep gamers happy for a very long time.

When I say waiting I'm referring to waiting for the M17x to get the dual 5870s.

I agree but I still prefer ATI. I guess I officially changed sides.

It makes me anxious for the new card to launch already. In less than 24 hours, my notebook will become a paperweight.

I'd rather stick with the most powerful single Gpu solution for now over a crossfire or Sli solution. Just a matter of personal preference. I would rather not deal with the driver/power/heat/possible stuttering issues that can happen with a dual-gpu setup. As it has been shown in a lot of games, double the GPU does not equal double the performance.

I did, but your approach was different compared to mine. I lashed at armjay for misinformation and skewed context. You tried to take a small shot at me for a pity typing mistake in grammar that everyone commonly makes, regardless of their proficiency in the English language. I'm looking at one in the last page that you missed, and it's not from my posts or your posts.

With a dual GPU solution you can pick to run dual or single based on the game.

Yes. It still constitutes as being a jerk, but the delivery was not on the same level as mine and is categorized differently, in this case as a grammar nazi, or grammarian as I like to refer to. http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/grammarian.htm

The site I linked is my number one guide to combating on forums. It's been in my bookmark folder for over a decade and this is one of the very rare times that I disclose it for reference. You should study it too. It helps everyone be a better forum warrior. I definitely know where I fall into according to the guide.

Without looking at it, I would say you probably fall under a section that describes your forum warrior avatar as: "Wry, Dry, Sardonic, Sarcastic, Stoic".

I can appreciate all of those things. My only problem is that every once in a while, even the most sarcastic or cynical of us needs to come out of our shell once in a while and just "BWAHAHAHAHAHA" all over the f'in place.

You've got to lighten up every once in a while bud. A good hardy laugh every once in a while can be good for you!

I was wondering if we have any solid confirmation on the speakers. Some sites listed as 4 speakers, some as 2 with the sub. Looks like 2 speakers underneath the screen and the sub. Any final word on this?

I also have a speaker related question, does anybody know good external speakers ? When I get my hands on this asus I want my house to tremble with explossions from cod mw2 and frighten the neighbours with the gut-slashing sounds from Assassins creed 2 when it releases.
If the speakers will be as good as the alienware m17x (heard their capacity on online video's) then I won't bother getting external ones.

Notebook Review will be reviewing this model when it is released. I am sure there will be a number of users that will be doing reviews once they get their hands on this unit. :)

I agree with you it would be ideal if ASUS sent out some demo units.

Thanks for the timely and helpful responses in regards to the Canadian Reseller/Tax info, Don, kurtcocaine, and Justin! I think I will be going with an American Reseller (for the customization, unless someone has anymore info on a Canadian Reseller with some customizable options, so this is somewhat a bump from my previous post) if I can confirm reasonable shipping rates and the absence of duty.

I've also heard that Xotic and Gentech have received a ton of pre-orders, and that anyone who pre-orders now would be lucky to get their G73JH with the first wave. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi ztaz :), with the uncertainty of how much allocation will be available at release it is hard to say exactly how many orders will be fulfilled. ASUS usually has waves of releases when a new model arrives into their stock, meaning after the first initial shipment there will be more usually trailing behind within the next 1-2 weeks.

    3DMark06 SCORES

If someone else has posted this already, I apologize - I did a search and couldn't find any posting besides the info that Iata tried but couldn't get 3DMark06 scores.

ASUS has given us 3DMark06 scores now: 13,667

Once again, this is at the 1366x768 resolution.

Just to consolidate information, the 3DMark Vantage results were:
    P8,080 total
    7370 GPU Score

The screenshot below has both test results shown.

Nice. I hit GPU P7370 with a 4870 but it was OC'ed. The res settings they posted are wrong. Even the setting shown in 3DMark06 looks like 1280 x 768...which is odd also.

There is still some confusion about how many speakers the ASUS G73JH-A1 has.

It is our information that it has 2x Altec Lansing Stereo speakers + Subwoofer.

It does not appear to have a S/PDIF port, just headphone out and mic in.

We may have to wait until it actually arrives to eyeball it to be sure.

Someone in the AlienWare forum posted their 3dmark06 numbers on their 280m gtx overclocked and at a slightly lower res and the 5870 beat it handily! This is looking good; now we need to see some game benches!

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=384642

He scored 11,200 3dmarks with a heavy over-clock and at a 1280x800 resolution. Things are looking up!

Agreed. Mixed info still on the speakers. Some say 4 but the pictures clearly show 2 and a sub. I'm guessing it will arrive with a 2.1 set-up.

My Asus has the S/PDIF port doubling with the headphone out so I suspect the G73JH will be likewise. I have read that it does come with S/PDIF so I'm sure they can do the same thing with the G73JH.

Of course hands on will tell all! :D

@evensen007 oh and ty for the + lol :)

If you want to look at a comparable 280M you need to look at the new M17x or the Clevo M980NU, W860CU or W870CU. It's a different version MXM.

I hit 13k+ @ 1280x768 with my GTX 260M with a mild overclock. This score is nice but not overly impressive and the resolution is still a bit fishy. Like Mandrake pointed out, they claim 1366x768 but the 3dmark06 window clearly shows 1280 x 768.

True, so the CPU is accounting for SOME of the difference in performance, but the Sager NP9280, with a more powerful desktop Core i7 920 processor (2.66 GHz, 8 MB cache) and a GTX 280M, gets right around 13,000, so these scores are pretty solid proof that the 5870 is the stronger card if it can outperform a GTX 280M paired with a more powerful CPU when it is paired with the i7-720QM (1.6 GHz with all 4 cores running, 6 MB cache).

    Edited to Add:
NP9280 scores are based on purely stock clocks.

I would like to see those numbers. I can't imagine they would be much different, seeing how the one I linked was only from last June and it was heavily over-clocked. I would like to see stock 280m MXM3.0b numbers so we can compare apples to apples.

Like I said, I would like to see stock numbers so it's a good baseline comparison. I'm sure we will be able to over-clock the G73 too, but that's not what I'm looking for. Anyone have stock 280m numbers with similar specs?
