oh okay. Thank you so much for clearing it up. Cause I was I was unsure if its like special promoition going on or special get gets it etc etc. I'm in Iraq and my Asus laptop has died after 5 months use ...so I'm getting it repaired due to one bad ram and one bad motherboard. Went shopping online for laptops looking for fair prices. Toshiba Qismo whatever its spelled caught my eye but too expensive. I read about Asus newest laptop on cnet my mouth dropped hearing the price around 1500 I was like no way! So popped in this forum and seeing the resellers. 1595 for for a spec like that is a wonderful damn deal...The only thing I'm curious about which I can't read all 200 some pages is the cpu being overclocked. I read a review about G51 saying the overlock is a hype didn't overclock too well. So I'm wondering if this will have the same issue also.

Man I'm still conflicted about the hdd and ssd. I am new to laptops did I read correctly that if I get the hdd I can replace it with a ssd later myself? I know you cannot upgrade most laptops will it be possible for the average computer guy to upgrade the cpu and graphic card in this model later?

An SSD upgrade is very simple, and there is plenty of info available, and many folks here who can help you out. Perhaps save your money for now..... most will find standard HDD's sufficient for their needs.

I don't think this has any overclocking feature except the native one built into the i7 series i.e. Intel Turbo Mode which allows you to over clock a single core for single core applications. For example, in the 720qm it overclocks a single core from 1.6 to 2.8GHz

SSD u can very very easily put in yourself without any issues
CPU can be changed easily enough but will void warranty unless done by authorized reseller(XoticPC,GenTech,Powenotebooks,BTOtech, etc..)
GPU u can only change to some future version released by Asus(as they reverse the MXM connector), provided the bios supports it which basically means no, you cant upgrade the gpu

Thanks brother. I wonder how long until the G73 reviews are out, I want a great system and ASUS is clearly in the run for that but I am to hesitant.
I don't know how everyone is pre-ordering something that has not been tested out throughout. I mean you all have said it yourself that this company has made certain models with the ROG brand that have had issues in heating and under-clocking yet they order this one.

I have to force myself to wait, I can't take the plunge especially with the whole ordering through XoticPC and shipping it to Toronto.

I do not want the headaches of paying $200-400 extra in brokerage fees and taxes yet alone deal with returning if I am unsatisfied with it. I can't recall whether or not I would have to pay for return shipping but even that extra is just way over the top.

This machine has to be reviewed and tested, until then... no to much hassle and gamble.

this should have power4gear still, which OCs the i7 by 1 bin. i.e from 1.6ghz on 4 cores to 1.73 ghz on 4 cores, basically making it similar to an 820. at least thats what I've gathered from the G51J's p4g.

there was a description error originally and ken at gentech honored the error at the price if ordered prior to error correction. the error was 1066 vs 1333 ram. i would suggest to not opt for the higher speed ram. i think that there is 0 to almost no real world gain.

    Justin,

I have also heard today, that Asus will not release the G73, until G72 stocks are depleted. Have you not heard this, and are the estimated dates optimistic, at best? Could you please elaborate?

    Thanks!

LOL! I have posted on this, and been asking myself the same question all along. WHO would want a G72, now that the G73 has been made available for pre-order? I do not understand the Asus logic here, but I have been hearing this since 31 December.

    G72Gx-A1 = Q9000 Quad-Core/GTX 260M 1GB GDDR3/6GB DDR2
    G73JH-A1 = i7-720QM/ATI HD5870 GDDR5/8GB DDR3
    Hard choice, eh?
It's not like 5870 is going to outperform gtx 260m or anything.

probably those folks who go into the shopping experience w/o doing much research - those that don't know there will be a release of a new laptop soon...

for example, before i did my research and found this site with all the info, i didn't know anything about a g73 release...i was at newegg and saw the g72 and g51 with all the bsod issues...it was b/c of bsod issues that i went searching on the internet and happened to this forum, which then lead me to compare a g51 to the g73...the rest is history....

Ok, let's suppose you are correct here..... this would mean, that we are waiting on the ignorant consumers, to buy all the G72's (at $1,645.00), before Asus will ship our pre-ordered G73's, right? (according to Asus logic)

LOL! I am starting to see this whole 'pre-order' thing in a different light.

On the contrary, I hope that this theory is totally incorrect and that they'll ship out ASAP - I'm getting ready to put in a pre-order and it NEEDS <-- :D to be here in my grubby little hands BEFORE i deploy. I don't want to be stuck in theater hoping that the mail system will somehow deliver a laptop to me correctly...like legacy (i kid i kid)....

on that note, Striker, you are very right in that the resellers here have been very helpful (I know I'm not supposed to be biased and say which one so I'll leave it vague). They and many subscribers like you have all been quite helpful in shedding what knowledge there is thus far on this laptop.

i just hope that the boat it's coming in (like Justin was saying) doesn't capsize or anything - akin to that disaster a couple years ago when Mazda lost like 5000+ cars when a boat's pumps went whack and the boat tipped over...

Striker, are you still on your meds!?

Anyhow, I don't think Asus has EVER held back a new model to wait for old stock to clear out. So it doesn't make sense in this case. Just my 2c.

There are so few G72's available that I highly doubt this has any effect on the release of the G73. The dates I provided are what we were provided from ASUS. As you probably know or have seen from past releases ASUS can be on the optimistic side with release dates. We will see. Believe it or not, G72's are still selling while the last bit of inventory is being depleted.

So i have this on preorder with ICD on CPU/GPU and an Intel Pro 5300 wireless card. I was wondering if spending an extra $255 is worth going from 8gb DDR3 1066 to 8gb DDR3 1333 or if throwing down another $575 is worth it going from an i7-720QM to an i7-820QM? thanks

Unless they gave us the wrong spec again then it must be 2 sticks of 4GB, here is the picture of the G73Jh MB, only two memory slots and I can't anywhere on the mainboard that has more memory slots:

CPU is above the RAM slots at the bottom of the laptop, but you can't access the CPU from the RAM compartment, you'll need to remove bottom cover and top cover in order see the CPU:

I know it probably sounds like a dumb question but i am not very knowledgeable when it comes to some of these options. I know obviously the 2 are better but im asking if shelling out 900 more dollars is really worth it or not....some info instead of a goofy looking dog would be cool too ;)

My god, this just breaks my heart. Asus has decided to go with a cast aluminium cold plate with fiendishly useless shark fins for the GPU. What a major way to cut corners, Asus. I can only hope that the CPU cooling assembly is still made of copper. Those i7's aren't exactly the coolest chips on the block, mostly due to the integration of the northbridge. That along with almost zero clearance, from what I can tell from the pic, makes for zero mods and an overestimated cooling solution that the community hype has so dear wished for. I hope those two fans can make up for these upsets.

CFM will still come from the center intakes. The third set of intakes near the CPU in the picture above is there as a second point of entry for the CPU fan to draw air as the CPU heatsink is most likely not going to be as flat as the GPU heatsink and will obstruct airflow if the CPU fan drew air solely from the center.
