That is correct, there is no RAID support for any of the ASUS models.

 

um there is hardware raid for the G51VX so its not all asus models =]

um..how is the G51VX not a current US Asus model? the G60VX also has raid support iirc, is available at bestbuy. G51VX-X3A is available at newegg and has raid support.

this kind of suck, My G51J is barely 2 months old and this laptop is coming out with ATI 5870. I'm very tempted to sell G51J and get the G73JH.....

 

Cut your losses or try and see if your reseller will take it back due to manufacture defect... thats what I did and I will be shipping it back getting my 1500 back.

 

iirc, fuyuki's doesn't BSOD at all so he'd have a hard time arguing defect.

 

When do manufacturers usually release benchmarks for new GPUs? Would we only know once people here have theirs and start posting reviews or do you think they'd release them before it went on sale? I'm assuming the latter option would be far wiser in terms of generating hype for this thing

 

Hopefully with CES 2010 4 days away we will get to see some benchmarks hopefully from ASUS on this machine!! I would put it at 12K+ easily just from the specs and what it should perform at.

lol I was being conservative with my estimate based on the fact we still dont 100% know the entire specs on this thing. I think though you will be right with 14k+, as the G51J with a rebranded card scored almost 11k...

 

The first and only Laptop I ever bought (Asus F3JP with an x1700 GPU) was a bit of a disaster for me - unsupported graphics drivers, overheating etc. So an EXTREMELY tempted to preorder this beast of a machine - I have to say though, it does look a bit too good to be true and I was thinking about holding back for reviews.

Then again, I've been away from PC gaming for so long that I'm pretty sure this would give me a tangible boost in performance regardless. As long as it doesn't repeat the G51J's BSOD issues... With more power under the hood, the heating could become a problem I fear (will definitely upgrade the cooling gel if I do order it though, just to be on the safe side...)

 

smart idea to upgrade your thermal compound. If support for the drivers are below par, im sure the users on this forum will come up with good modded drivers for it to work. But, asus is usually really good on there support drivers online and generally the OEM drivers it comes with usually work fairly well.

 

That's what I've heard - just had some bad issues with ATI cards in the past and was looking to jump ship with Nvidia (hence my prior interest in the Asus G51J - that gtx 260m looked more than reasonable) but after reading through a lot of forum threads, ATI seem to be where it's at right now and this rig does look like a beast...

 

In the past the support for notebook drivers from both companies was almost none existent, but we had people like DOX that modified drivers so they could be used on laptops, this seems to be changing some with nvidia releasing more notebook drivers, but who knows how this is gona play over time.

I don't think it will be THAT good.. According to notebookcheck.net mobility 5870 is comparable to the Radeon HD 5750.
I think it's going to perform as either GTS 250 or HD 4870, we'll see. Either way I'm happy. I hope I get rid of my G51j-a1 thru ebay soon.

 

can't really do that. I didn't have any BSOD problems on my G51J-A1. Also, it's already past the return/exchange period.

ati mobility 5870 should be very similar to desktop 5870. I believe I read it somewhere that ati use desktop chip in their 5000 series mobility version.

 

You got a rare egg then for not having a BSOD issue with it! But usually, when there is a known manufacture defect that is not being fixed/supported, resellers will work with its customers to find a way to meet your needs to keep you and them happy.

 

yes i meant desktop 4870 otherwise i wouldve put down mobility.
And he said mobility hd 5870 will give a same power as GTX 280M SLI which I don't think is true, but I'm pretty sure it'll be better than 280m gtx. definitely.

 

Yea, 2 280's SLI'd Desktop will surely beat this thing, but at any rate, its still an impressive card for a laptop and will definately knock the socks off on anything out on the market today on nearly maxed settings.

This notebook is selling like hotcakes already, like 10 of us here solo purchase along with 20 more about to do the group thing with Xotix, and this is from this community alone. Wonder how the overall pre-sales are doing for this book!

 

I believe sales of this notebook will be SMASHING! Especially, in light of those willing to risk joining the 'early adopter' club. It is a terrific buy for the money!

I further believe that supply will not initially meet demand, and Xotic may find the 'group-buy' senario more trouble than it's worth. Again, it will be interesting to see if the 'discount' you guys receive is meaningful, and I hope everyone is happy in the end. Good luck to all 'group-buy' enlistee's, and especially Justin.

That would be great, but i doubt you will see that kinda performance, probably in a couple of years, i would be happy if the performance is close to a desktop 4890/285gtx, which i still have my doubts, probably will be more like 4870/275gtx.

 

I am thinking close to a 260GTX desktop card or a 4850 with maybe a mild overclock... I think the 4870 is still abit of a stretch but hopefully we are all wrong and its a total Monster ...

 

....now we compare 4870 to 265/275 (Desktop)? ....when did that happen lol ....

Hey Guys.

I sent a msg to Xotic a couple days ago and have gotten no response. Does anyone know how reliable the estimated shipping dates can be?

I only ask because I will be traveling to California Jan 27th - Feb 10th. I want to pre-order to the address I will be staying at in Cali but I don't want the laptop to arrive after I have left.

Xotic website says shipping is late January, which should be fine, but does anyone know if there are often delays with pre-ordering? I have no experience with pre-orders.

count me in on the list. Ive been following the G73JH thread on my phone waiting for a chance to get on a computer and join the list. hopefully its not too late

 

So long as the mobile HD5870 uses the same processor as the desktop [just like the HD4xxx series before it] I'm leaning towards "total monster" myself. Just looking at these specs I have to be thinking it is going to be about halfway between a HD5770 and a HD5850 and probably closer to the HD5850. Either way, one Mobility HD5870 should smoke a SLI GTX280m setup as that's just a pair of underclocked GTS250, which about equals a GTX260 and so a HD5770.

The only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger is the knowledge that Crossfire will most likely come not too far afterwards.

Well i had a 5850 in my desktop for the past couple weeks and to give you an idea of how powerful they are i score high 14ks in Vantage under the GPU score .. I have an [email protected] as well ...

I am seriously doubting this thing will score more then 8k stock myself under GPU ... I hope i am wrong but i am remaining realistic here and also optimistic...

Even at 8k for a single card it is no slouch... As for Crossfire setups i am going to stay away from those machines for awhile as i have owned the past couple machines with SLI and Xfire M17x/W90
and just dont feel like dealing with the issues/noise those machines bring to the table and a single card will handle 99% of the games today with little issue...

 

I've had an SLI laptop, but no ATI mobility laptop. I've heard bad things about obtaining mobile ATI drivers and doing a few searches didn't mitigate that much. LV2G has the 9.12 and there is a modder that looks iffy. As long as LV2G has something once in a while then I'll be happy.

...but the point is that maybe, at least with ATI, I probably have enough reasons to stick to a single GPU laptop.
