I just buy whatever suits me. I change laptops so often, today it's an AW tomorrow it may be some awesome Clevo/Sony/MSI whatever. But as for derailing the thread, I don't think so. That person specifically mentioned AW so I let him know there was a discount available right now that expires tonight. That's on topic and I make no apologies for it.
-
I appreciated the input. I've had a G73 on pre-order since Jan 2nd and I'm sticking with it. Always have a plan B.
-
No problem. Personally I can't wait until people get this in their hands. Asus is doing a great thing for the PC gaming scene by putting out high powered laptops for a reasonable price. I'd imagine the last thing any of us wants to see is consoles dominate more than they already do. -
Xotic - $1650:
1920x1080
Core i7 720QM
1TB HDD
Expensive X-com - $1960:
Core i5-540M
1600x900
640GB HDD
Same config as Xotic = $2332 in X-Com !!!!!!!!!!

i am in the process of having my m17x returned for a refund due to the fact of poor quality / workmanship
the black plastic on the back of the screen has come off randomly/ was never tight when i first got it
one of the graphics cards has a rattle in it :|
my name-plate was never engraved with my name ?? go figure?
the media bar does not work anymore
so quality materials were used in the making of my laptop, but as far as workmanship, ill give it a 2/10
2 because it turns on
it was a q9000, dual 260m's in sli, 2x 256gb in raid 0, 4 gig ram
and im glad i got a refund so i can buy a decent machine
very very interested in this g73, no e-sata sux tho plus that cpu cooling vent looks rediculous??
we need more comfirmation on the cooling of this thing
people have bin saying that the air is pulled up from the bottom, but i keep seeing diagrams of the air coming from the front of the laptop instead??
so it is an actual LAP-friendly laptop??
also on the main page of this topic it sais 4 speakers + sub woofer yet GENtech are saying
Built-in 2 speakers + subwoofer and array microphone -
Since going to the univeristy with a college fund costs 80 euros, I might sign up by the time they release students discount, eventhough I would already a job by then. If my machine would cost 3500 i'd still make about 350-80= 270 euros profit ^^ -
This is what the speakers looks like:
And this is the subwoofer:

Moo, grats on the new system. I looked at them, could not justify the price. I considered the outlet AWs, and while I could get one with similar specs with a coupon from there for the ASUS price, it would have the CD2Q processor and still weight 4 more lbs.
I think ASUS is a better value in my opinion.
In addition, neither of these systems have been tested so we may be comparing a terd sandwich to a flaming . -
IMO we should stop comparing alienware and asus.
They both are great value for the machine. -
Hey guys, will asus start to sell g73j model February-10?
Andy news about that??
I live in Czech Republic, and alza.cz looks like have Acer notebook with mobility hd5850. Other specs are bad, but looks like 5850 is available...
Here is the link for that lappy, http://www.alza.cz/EN/acer-aspire-8942g-434g64bn-d149320.htm -
does the xotic website have all the correct specs listed for this model?
can someone tell me the specific difference between Built-in 802.11 Wireless A/B/G/N and Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 5300 802.11 a/g/n???? is one faster or better or what? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
The Intel® PRO/Wireless 5300 802.11 a/g/n is a three antenna card that is faster (up to 450 Mb/s vs. up to 300Mb/s) and will give you more range than the standard 2 antenna card.
-
But from what has been said, the G73JH will not support the 3 atenna 5300 wireless card... or have I missed something here...
-
well they have it listed as an option on the xotic site... does that mean its a typo? anyone know?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
What we have all said is that until we actually get them in country we cannot be sure whether the 3 antennas will be there, so we have told all of our pre-order customers that if only 2 antennas are there, and we cannot install the 3rd antenna wire, we will not charge for that upgrade.
-

If I am not mistaken, I believe Ken Lee looked into this matter further, and found only two wires will be necessary on the Intel WiFi 5300..... ergo this card should work fine in the G73JH.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
2 antenna wires may make it work, but will not give the additional speed or range. Therefore without the enhanced performance the value of the upgrade is questionable.
-
N uses 3 wires to help its speed and distance, its what makes it different from A/B/G.
So with 2 wires you would just be wasting away money :/ -

Anyhow, I hope you are wrong, but I guess we will find out soon enough.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Not exactly true The_Moo™.
The Intel 5100 802.11a/g/n is a two antenna card that gives less range and speed, but is an N card.

Please re-read http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5773806&postcount=3668
It will only be a waste of money IF there are only 2 antenna wires coming from ASUS, and IF we cannot install the 3rd wire.
If both of the above are true, there will be no significant enhancement of performance but there may well be a significant difference in the reliability of holding connectivity with the Intel card, so at this point the value of the upgrade is only questionable. I for one would still get the Intel card if for no other reason than confidence in the connectivity reliability of the Intel card.
If we find that we cannot use 3 antenna wires we will offer the Intel 5100 card at a reduced price just for its added reliability. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
I guess the 5100 card would be a consideration for extended reliability.
We shall see!
-
the 5300 is a better card but you will not get the benefits from N.
The 5300 will suffer less drops and increased stability but yea... -

if you are clever you could also just add your own third antenna/wire....just have to take off the screen to install it and run the wire yourself
-
they have their hands tied from Asus (speculation ) i bet and the service they would have to do on EVERY computer
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I was referring to end users, not resellers lol
remember changing the lid on the whitebook, how all the antennas were right there? should be that simple. The antennas seemed to be somewhat generic and just have to fit. -
they are generic
but i do know what you mean... its easy to add as a end user -
Getting doddering in my old age, but are the i5/i7 CPUs usable on the same motherboard? I guess this question isn't limited to the G73jh alone. Was wondering if it was possible to buy the i5 version of any machine and upgrade it to i7 at a future date.
If I do recall correctly, and I'm not uncertain, the i5/i7 boards are different, no? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
you can do that
they will all work fine as processors but you will not be able to utilize the integrated graphics core in the arrandale based processors -
-
How usually fast is the price decrease on mobile processors?
And assuming an average of 10% performance increase on benchmarks, this means a heavily CPU dependent app (such as emulators, 3D packages, etc) will see an average of 10% increase in performance, right? (as in, a render wich takes 3600 seconds in one, will take 3260 seconds on the most eficient, or a 40fps game on the emulator, will get 44 fps on the most powerfull one) -
A bit of a random question but I preordered my G73 from GenTech on 1/1/2010. I remember it was mislabeled with 8GB of DDR3 1333 then switched to 1066. I think i remember seeing that GenTech was honoring the messup by giving the 1333 memory to those who preordered before the correction at no additional cost. I am pretty sure that I preordered mine before the correction since 1/1/10 was the 2nd day preorders were being taken and I want to say that I saw it stating 1333 as i was ordering. Can anyone confirm when the correction was made? And should I email GenTech about possibly having this corrected?
-
You can have N, but 2 wires would not give you the full benefits of N -

Man, I want this notebook already....
I want my Total War....
I want my non-overheating ASUS, hopefully...
My G1 is burning upppp...
Btw, one quick question ( please don't flame if this has been asked before)
Looking at the pictures the Blue Ray drive looks, um, slanted. Is that some sort of plastic/rubber plate that you can remove and stick in a standard drive and stick back on? -
At least for DVD drives, usually those curved faceplates cannot be attached to standard aftermarket drives, since the fastening tabs are located differently.
-
So upgrading to the Intel 5300 from the stock ASUS one that comes in the G73 will not give much of a performance boost? -
It will be a waste of money IF there are only 2 antenna wires coming from ASUS, and IF resellers cannot install the 3rd wire.
but if resellers CAN install the 3rd wire, it will give you a performance boost.
We have to wait and see. -

Hi guys, i have another very highly theoretical question for you
what are chances of Asus (or another manufacturer) making laptop, which would have:
1) 120Hz screen
2) Have full HD (1080p)
3) Nvidia 3d technology (does ATI have anything similar?)
4) Direct X 11
5) And that means having Fermi based mobile GPUs
6) Running them in SLI
would you say there are any chances of this kind of laptop appearing at all? if yes, what chances of that happening this year?
thank you for your answers
P.S. i want all this to play BF:BC2 in 1080p while in 3d -
My understanding is mobile Fermi chips won't be around until @Q2 2011.
-
where should i order my G73 from? im in chicago
-
just go wherever you feel like. They all provide outstanding services.
I ordered mine from Ken @ GentechPC, service is great. I know if I need another ASUS laptop I would buy from him. -
2) the only potential difficulty I see is getting a 120Hz, 1080p screen
3) Nvidia - not until at least next year (Fermi isn't even released for desktops yet). ATI - catalyst 10.1 is said to support 3d, so, theoretically this month.
4) ATI is the only one with DX11 mobile GPUs out
5) Fermi - likely sometime 2011
6) since you want DX11 and 3D, you're either waiting for ATI (until catalyst 10.1) or nvidia (2011)
