I think what he means is that due to lack of eSATA and firewire he worries that there may be other cuts made inside the system.

I gotta say though this is like a Ferrari without air-conditioning, of course it would be nice, but you purchase a Ferrari for the speed and thrill of driving not comforts. While it may be lacking in some features that doesn't mean that they skimped anywhere else.

Same thing with the G73JH, while all the ports would be nice, for many of us we simply don't care if they are included or not since this will be a primarily gaming machine. For me at least I already have a laptop so the G73 would be a purely gaming rig.

If I were in your shoes and wouldn't take any kind of financial hit for returning it, I would and order the G73JH, but I am more gamer than video editor and I want the matte black.
If I were to lose any $, I would keep what's coming.

I`m thinking of getting one of this baby. The problem is, should I get one with RAID 0 or not? What are the disadvantages? (I pretty much know the advantages so far)

Data safety mostly. If one drive hiccups, you could lose everything in the array.

If you're going to RAID 0, just backup every so often.

Hmmm, you may be a little disappointed when you get your credit card bill and it actually says $2,150AUD (conversion+$60 Customs charge), but still a saving of $240 is nothing to sneeze at.

BTW: Has anyone posted this on here http://www.notebookcheck.net/Hands-On-Asus-G73Jh-with-ATI-s-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5870.25103.0.html? If so, sorry for re-post, but I didn't see it in my skim.

Almost all synaptic touchpads can be made multi touch with a custom drivers install. Also my 1000H Elentech pad supports it. So that only leaves I think 1 brand left that does not have multi touch available for it.

Ahh ok. Worth looking into for people used to multi-touch. Worse that can happen is you have to reinstall your old drivers if it doesnt work.

Do we know if the touchpad will be a synaptics or an Alps touchpad? I know both of those have some multitouch drivers but Im not too sure what we can do if it turns out to be some other brand touchpad.

Reading through the manual because I'm bored.

Interesting thing as it has been speculated before in these close to 400pages.

The G73 comes in two models as it pertains to DIMM slots.

There are 2 or 4 DIMM slot models. It even gets more interesting...

With the 4 DIMM slot models it seems that one of the DIMM slots may not be very user friendly accessable.

    Four DIMM slots model:

DIMM slot 2 is located at the back of the motherboard and will be populated by memory at the factory if the Notebook PC comes with four DIMM slots. We recommend you visit an authorized service center or retailer if you would like to upgrade or change the memory installed on DIMM slot 2.

I do not believe it has been verified how one determines if they are receiving a 2 or 4 DIMM model. I know that some of the early units sent to resellers, or for review may be 2 DIMM or 4 DIMM but I'm not sure there was any pattern that could be drawn for what the public should expect.

    Thoughts?

From what I remeber it seems everyone here is getting the 4 DIMM version.

I believe the 2 DIMM version is only for the i3 and i5 versions which will not be sold in the U.S.

@ Warhammer, since I have no idea what a DIMM slot is for, i'll jus ask straight away.
The g73jh is obviously a gaming notebook, will the amount of DIMM slots matter towards gaming performances? Or is does it only matter for those 'few special' users who tend to do more than just gaming with it...

DIMM aka RAM aka memory ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM)

Hope that helps. I was just assuming based on the context but I actually did wiki it to double check.

Gee Wiz guy, please READ! It's right here in this thread. Donald of Powernotebooks.com, and Justin from XoticPC. I believe Donald even listed suggested dates for the first three shipments. Since you raise this issue again, perhaps they can now tell us if they have any new info.

as this is the first laptop that i will actually "own" i want to make sure it lasts long. as far as i can see, there is no software for asus laptops that let you control when the battery starts and stops charging.
if a software exisists, can someone link me to it; and if not, does anyone knows, defintly, if charging is software or hardware controlled? if software, i woudld be willing to try to develop a little app to start and stop the charging process.
    any help/advice is appreciated

I don't think there is any app which allows you to do this. The battery will stop charging itself when it reaches 100% charge. If you don't want to charge the battery, but still use the computer, then you can take out the battery and work only with the laptop plugged in.

    ***
PS: How long on average does the UPS Standard Ground Shipping take to reach you? (lets say from CA to FL)?

Charging is controlled by the hardware of the computer, as charging will still occur (and stop at 100%) when the notebook is powered down and left plugged in (it's relatively vital that hardware be the controller, as the computer has to be able to make a seamless transition to battery power when the AC adapter is unplugged). I have seen a very small systems with a semi-soft approach to this, allowing you to press a button to charge the battery only up to a certain percentage, but this is a very rare feature from what I have seen.
