No i meant one post in THIS forum which has everything, i didnt mean another forum, I dont mean a forum where people keep adding comments and making it bigger ,I mean a single post that doesnt change except for new pics and videos, which can be reposted here every few days to get the info back at the top of the forum so people dont have to search.

In theory, the OP will update the first post with info as it becomes available so that you do not have to read the entire thread
-
Evil, just plain Evil
-
I second that...
-
unfortunately, there hasn't been much new information in the past 14 days. So it's just people ranting and speculating......Well, 10 more days before we get additional info, I guess

Yeah, essentially what you are saying, is what that post is for. It will be updated, as new information becomes available. All you need do, is 'bookmark' the post.
-
Anyone know if we could use some of the other i7 processors such as dual core ones?
Higher clock rate sounds sounds would a be better right?
e those two extra cores are just going to be slowing us down down for awhile on the defualt chip -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
HEY, it wasn't me that suggested it, LOL!
-
Just to make sure, I'm not ready to order now and it might be up to 6 months, so this laptop will still be available in the same specs from the same resellers (powernotebooks, gentech) at that time, correct?
-
Actually in 6 months, there will be new models out.
-
hey what happened to the portuguese who were getting 5 units on 29/01 iirc??
-
can you pros convince me to buy this thing
http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-g73jha2-order-p-2761.html?wconfigure=yes
its the a2 version
I just bought this though, i have 30 days to return it when it arrives tommorrow
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5250527&CatId=2511
will I see a huge gain ect and is it worth the extra 500??? -
Well. we're not here to convince you to buy the laptop, it's just that some people have questions and we answer the questions for them.
I don't get why people buy things if they're going to return them.
to tell you what's better from the model you linked is that G73jh has a better CPU, better GPU, more RAM, more HD, not Refurbished, built strong, better cooling system, better battery life, GPU supports DX11, free mouse and a bag. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
MUCH better warranty!
-
I forgot about that!
the most important thing... duhh -
with that extra 500, you'll get a better screen, newer processor, probably 20 percent better video card (correct me if im wrong, cause i probably am) a better cooling solution, and imo a much sleeker looking machine. i have that computer you listed, and i have no beef with it except for the screen quality. besides that im happy, and you'd be getting it 300 bucks cheaper than when i got it.
-
I'm expecting 15% increase, at most 20% for the GPU.
and I believe screen will be the same as G70 series. -
oh, the g71gx rx05 he showed us is the one from best buy with the 1440 x 900 screen of lower quality than the 1920x1200 screens that came on the reseller, higher costs models. I expect the g73s screen to be on par with that screen.
-
oh, I was thinking about g71gx a1, but I believe screen is not that great.
-
I say go for it, if you can handle the extra cost
In reading your previous posts you have me confused as you have stated that you are picky , but you have also said you were concerned about the extra cost
In the end its your choice
Alex -
true
yea, i was resting thinking about it
can't get it outta my mind even with good wine
I like the fact that its new and comes with a cool mouse and backpack aswell good for me since i move around so often and gaming is all i can do if im not having anymore.
prob the first post explaining this laptop as a sub for
I heard complaints about cooling, bios, and screen. has me second guessing
I figured I could just apply good thermal compund and use a laptop cooler, and undervolt cpu and overclock gpu!
I just want a laptop for under 2000 that will last me 3-4 years!
do you guys think the asus g73jh will last, or is their better tech coming out in the near future? -
There's always better tech coming out. No computer "last". If you always wait for something better you'll never be able to buy anything at all.

Hi, everyone!
I am glad I found this forum and want to thank people for posting useful information about G73.
Ten more days... -
I know, the wait is killing me
-
it will feel like 10years to me. hahah
-
The included mouse is very similar to logitech's mx518/g5 in terms of size and shape...maybe they weren't selling well and asus bought them on the cheap?
-
earlier on in the thread people confirmed that the mouse is the HP Voodoo mouse (not sure of the actual name). Although not a razer, the reviews for it were pretty good

That's the way I see, an i7m today isn't a C2Qm replacement, it's just building on an expected future. Metaphorically what you've got is a V8 with a gas pedal (application/OS tells it to go, and the cores run), an i7 has a completely different style engine where you can control the cylinders use and group outputs (application/OS tells it to run these cylinders at these speeds). With W7 HT support and applications being written for more threads, not just cores, the i7 line will find its lead I suspect.
It seems like a stock split again in the processor world (i.e. gain twice the computational threads, lose half the speed, until it catches back up and splits again). As I notice in intel land, we went from fast C2D's to slower C2Q's to fast C2Q's to slow i7's.
Not really suck, but will adjust its use in beneficial ways. C2D & C2Q have reached their lifes architecture and clock speeds, that's it, 1-4 threads at the good OC speeds you can get. they are powerful and move some 0's and 1's. Now we're moving to more threads (8 and hardware is ahead of software), but take a hit on speed (over time these stock speeds are likely to increase and we can OC now).
Here's an ideal example of how the i7 can adjust for us now to use its architecture better and show how it can surpass down the road:
Let's say an app(s) runs 2 threads, on a C2D it will use 2 cores at set speed, on a C2Q it will use 2 cores at set speed, on an i7 it will use 2 cores/threads at an elevated (turbo) speed.
Say an app(s) runs 4 threads, on a C2D you will run 2 cores and work longer, on a C2Q you will be king running 4 cores at a higher speed than an i7, on an i7 you'll hope it takes advantage of your other threads so you won't feel so spanked by the C2Q.
Say an app(s) runs 8 threads, on a C2D hearing about the abilities of your friends i7, you'll want to upgrade, on a C2Q you'll be saying "sure i7, you have more hands, but mine are moving faster", on an i7 you'll be saying, "feeling the heat there C2Q".
When higher i7 speeds meet with HT support applications on a HT supported OS design, bye bye C2Q

cool I get it now, it was in that forum on the 34th page

Not sure if this has been posted but notebookcheck has put up a review for the g73
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Hands-On-Asus-G73Jh-with-ATI-s-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5870.25103.0.html -
Eazy_e, part of the $500 extra you're gonna want to spend anyway cuz unless I misread the Tiger Direct specs that thing comes with Vista (puke, heave, hurl), and you'll definitely want to upgrade to Win7. That machine was mid-range 6 months ago; the G73 is high performance & top shelf now (or would be if it was shipping
). If you can swing it there's no doubt in my mind you'd like the G73 much better... but of course it's up to you.

All I am saying is when I am encoding a 2 hour movie with insane H264 settings it better be faster than my W90 was
it will use all available cores to 100% I dont need fancy boost technology I need horsepower, same with all the other applications that are only single/dual threaded. They did not need some fancy boost that will overclock a couple of cores when others are not in use, just overclock all 4 cores if the other 2 are not in use it doesnt generate any extra heat or loss of energy.
Its a sales pitch to those who are not familiar with overclocking, its like an auto overclocking for joe, but as a power user I need to have it do more. the idea that the cores can go to 3ghz+ in turbo mode means they can handle it, I just hope the cpus built in thing that is supposed to do this and monitor all of it doesnt prevent you from manually overclocking all 4 cores in any way. -
Seems like an ok mouse. I'm a logitech guy and have both the G15 and G9, but man when I saw the Razer Mamba I wanted it!! This will be a perfect match for the G73JH!!
I love how it's a hybrid cord/cordless mouse. I always shop at newegg[$129], but this time BB has it beat at $116. I'm getting it this week and might be tempted to replace my G9 with it while I wait for the G73JH.

'Twin Turbo' apparently comes with this laptop, how much does it over 720-QM by?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I dont think anybody could know that yet, but if it has any kind of overclocking built in like that it means we can easily take manual control over that with a program like setfsb or clockgen, atleast in theory. -
before using setfsb you need to run addfsb....lol!
Intel XTU might be an option at least for 920 owners. -
Vicious...... I am no expert on such matters but when comparing the G73 vs the G72 I figured that although the clock rate on the base i7 is lower than the Q9000 processors, the i7 has a higher FSB or whatever (1333Mhz vs 1000Mhz) thus leading me to believe that it pretty much balances out because 1.6 * 1.3 = 2.08 give or take which is pretty much on par with a Q9000?
If this isn't the case why bother with i7 processors? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Na the FSB is just the pathway (interface) the data takes, best analogy would be SATA for hard drives.
Sata II is 2x faster than Sata I but if you have the same hard drive hooked up to both interfaces it does the same speed "aka processing power" the reason is Sata I is more than fast enough to handle any amount of data the HDD can transfer.
Same goes now for CPU, the C2Q FSB was more than fast enough, and once you overclocked it even more so. All that mattered was pure raw clock speed, the clocks of the cpu are what is actually crunching the numbers.
the i7 being a generation newer can process more information per clock cycle, not exactly sure the ratio but I would assume something along the lines of a 1.8ghz i7 doing the same amount of work as a 2.0ghz C2Q. I will know for sure when I get my unit some wprime test will be a very good indicator of the cpu power. -
After reading the posts by Quagmire and Vicious, I'm a little stuck.
Which is the better processor for my needs, the i7 or the Q9000?
Obviously I want something that will easily handle first person shooters for the next couple of years.
Also I need a rig that can multi-task (a lot). I run Word, Excel, Outlook all at the same time. At the same time I run trading software on 3 monitors (laptop + 2 external) and when the markets are slow I watch the occasional DVD. It is not unusual for me to have 1 or 2 browsers running at the same time with quite a few tabs / windows open.
My observations in the past on a C2D running +/-2Ghz that the processor was fine, 3 gig Ram was not enough and a 5,000rpm HDD was also a little slow. -
Well if you wanna score a bargain, get a C2D as it would be perfectly fine. However, if you would like to keep this laptop for quite a few years, I would recommend going with the latest and greatest. This model is especially well priced and will keep you going for at least 3-4 years.
-
Also remember we are talking about an architecture change not just a proc change. The i7 systems don't have the same bottlenecks the C2D systems have.
-
Last time I checked, the i7-720QM at stock speeds benched around the same speeds as an AMD Athlon X3 720 (2.8 GHz stock) in applications that could actually use all available cores (video transcoding, audio encoding, and the like), and it ran circles around the Core 2 Quad Q9000 (if I recall, it was actually outperforming the 2.53 GHz QX9300).
It's been a few months since I checked, so I don't have the articles close at hand, but I recall being very impressed when I read those numbers. -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Indeed, it would suck if that's the case, but I can't see it that way (I guess I should look into what's already out for OCing a mobile i7). Just disable turbo mode in the BIOS and OC away would be my line of thought, but I guess we'll have to see our BIOS options first. I wasn't too concerned about OC my mobile, but now it gives me something else to research tonight.
If your concerned about getting the most out of your cpu now and needing some life in it for a few more years, get the best C2Q you can afford.
If your willing to take the possibility of a some growing pains until all this HT stuff goes into full swing (assuming it does) and stock i7 speeds compete, get on the bus with an i7 and enjoy the ride.
Even now I can safely say that a i7 720m will pounce a 2GHz C2D, so don't bother with it unless the price is unbeatable, but you will be replacing it soon enough. 3G of memory is a minimum imo, I start at 6G due to encoding. Get a good SSD, your mind will be blown.
This whole C2 vs. i7 is just about apple to oranges (Mandrake #4693), but since they are both cpu's, we'll just put them in the same fruit salad.
This is the jist I get. I don't mind if I take a growing pain hit on gaming for a little while using an i7m to a C2Q, but my editing and encoding are important and that is where it is destined to shine and already started to. While I can stand "future proof", I certainly think about the future.
Q -
Dude, that is a perfect example of "how the i7 can adjust for us now to use its architecture better and show how it can surpass down the road." I couldn't say it better myself. After getting my thoughts together, here are my thoughts:
1: If future apps start taking advantage of 8 threads, then the 720qm is the winner.
2: If future apps are not programmed at all and uses threads the OS tells it to, in this case, I'm not sure what would be better 620m or 720qm.
3: If future apps takes advantage of 4 threads, then it would be better to go with a processor with 4 cores.
4: If, If, If If...... the future is uncertain. IMO, I think all apps should be programmed to either adjust to your processor or be able to tell the app to switch between number of threads being used. EDIT --> nvm, that made no since. It wouldn't matter either way. The factor of the matter is an app that uses more threads will make multithreaded processors an advantage.
Overall, I think the safest bet (if worried about price) would be to go for that balance of something like a 2.53ghz quad (u can overclock but I would never oc a laptop). With this, you won't get crazy speeds if an app uses 8 threads, and if a app takes advantage of 2 threads, 2.53 is a good speed for laptops.
If you don't give a damn about cash, go with the i7 920XM all the way. 3.20ghz single mode, 3.06ghz duo mode, and 2.80ghz quad mode. EPIC WIN!! Since the 620m is 3.06ghz, why bother with it. That single mode of 3.33ghz will do you no good. -
double vicious!
I have no idea how much speed the fsb helps out with. But the difference between 1333mhz and 1000mhz is unnoticeable. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the core i7 does away with the FSB all together as the processor talks directly to the ram, removing one of the big bottlenecks of the Core 2 architecture
memory throughput is much higher as a result with the nehalem architecture -
TRIPLE POST SON!! EDIT--> nvm, scook9 beat me to it.
From what you said you wanted to do with your lappy, you don't need an i7. heck, a regular core2duo will fit your needs just fine.
EDIT although, not sure about the "I run trading software on 3 monitors." Never messed with it. -
