So is it at all possible I can use my 6990m, and in future a 7970m in an ASUS G73SW? I guess under the assumption I buy a JH heatsink.
ASUS G73SWs seem to go fairly cheap on ebay, and I'd like a 17 inch screened machine to replace my P150HM.
I'd also like to know, assuming I do not do some kind of extensive effort on the heatsink (just enough to get it to work fine), how will the temps be without any /external/ cooling?

There are easier options.

I believe G73SW has not implemented any support for ATI/AMD cards in its system bios. Even standard MXM cards from nvidia work only after their video bios is modified. But I own 2 G73SW laptops both upgraded with 770m and 680m cards. However there is no proof anyone has upgraded G73SW to ati cards not to say its impossible.
P.S If you must have ati then go for G73JH as this thread is full of people that managed to upgrade to 7970m. -

You may want to look at more easily upgradable options really from other vendors for 2nd hand mod projects.

Hello i'm new in forum. I have little problem with my asus g73jh. My radeon 5870 is broken and i look for better replacement and i dont now wthat video card i put 6xxx or 7xxx series. If i put one of these models i need to change vbios or it works with out it ?

K guys.. Thanks for all your help. I got the m7970 working in the G73JH.. Another Success!!! Thanks to all your efforts. Basically, I has a clevo m7970 card and it wasn't flashing using the USB method mentione here because the VBIOS was not being recognized by the BIOS so it wasn't posting at all (just a blank screen) and the USB was not running (can tell if you use one with a Light). So a little trick was used to bypass the bios. Shorting (pull high) pins 1 and 8 on the VBIOS (on the card) chip until it boots then remove the short (pull low) just before typing "flash" (to run flash.bat). That's all it took.
Just one little problem. F9zSlavik,.. Which Catalyst driver are you using. Seems like no matter which one 11. 12 or 13.. , I get the same blue screen. It goes to the logon screen and then there's a little sound (jarring sound from speakers) and then a blue screen crash. I then have to restart in safe mode and remove the drive. I've does a good cleanup (in safe mode) between installations but no go.. Any ideas how to solve this problem.???
Tried:
13-1_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql
amd_catalyst_11.2_cap4
AMD_12.101.2.1-[Guru3D.com]

I am using the latest drivers, no issues, I get an occasional artifacting, but seems to only happen in the browser, black bloxes, maybe like 7, bottom right.
Also, do you have any pics? You can say you did it without posting some pics lol
-
It's all working, HDMI and all. No problems. what so ever. Will be benchmarking to let you know how stable it is.
Thanks -

IIRC you want the HM vbios.

thanks meaker well in the last fuw hours i have tryed at least 10 diffrent types of that vbios and still the one that came with the card (from MYTHLOGIC ) gets the best 3dmark11 score it seam just a bit diffrent than all the others..... so i flashed back to it in the end..
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Ah the vbios won't affect scores unless you modify voltages and clocks.

Jeez its been a while since I've been on here. My G73JH has been great all these years, however recently it developed a hard lock issue in the Windows 7 Install I had been running for years. No Rhyme or Reason to it, it would just hard lockup randomly while idle or under light load from tinkering with this or that in the OS.
Finally just threw in an SSD I had hanging around and installed Windows 8.1. It runs perfect until I installed every update 8.1 had out and then it would do the exact same thing. Locking up whenever it felt.
I then wiped it and reinstalled 8.1 RTM, installed every single updated driver I could get my hands on for everything. (No ASUS software except the ATK package, no Creative anything, etc)
Once Doing that, it seemed to work. Everything is normal, and I can bench the GPU for hours, copied tons of GB of data from the old HDD's to the new 1TB HDD I paired to the 120G SSD, etc. So Fingers Crossed it was just some Windows Update/Drive Mishap that caused the crashes...
So now back on topic...
I continue to toss the idea around of swapping out the old 5870M for a 7970M or now a 8970M, however going back through the thread, most all of the pictures of users mods are gone and I could have sworn there was more info out there outside of just reworking the stock cooler to work on the new card. (wasn't there something about modifying the standoff's in the Chassis itself to work with the new cards, or was that just for the 6870M?) The only thing keeping me out of doing this now is the cost. $390-500 isn't cheap for a semi risky upgrade project right now.
Either way, is there any sort of nutshell compilation of what has been covered so far on some of what everyone has run into that has remained consistent? (This really should be something the OP maintains over being spread across 100 pages...) If I end up doing the 8970M I will create a new thread with a good step by step. -
-
hi IM0001
The asus g73jh gpu upgrade is easy enough (as long as you are upgrading with amd "nvida upgrade needs bios & vbios mods" a user on this site by the name of jmhdj know about that) i thought of going with the 8970m but i had a 7970m laying around so i just put it in. i used the upgrade kit that is for the clevo hm laptop series and the g73jh heatsink. doing the upgrade this way you get a clean finish to it so as it dous not look like a hack job i will take some picks for you next time i have my laptop apart.
here is a pic of my heatsink. well not the bast but im not taking the laptop apart just now but you get the idear . its very affective cooling.

I tried to narrow it down to the Lan or Wifi driver, but even disabled the issue still seemed to persist. (In Windows)
However after getting the absolute latest drivers for both, the current 8.1 install seems to be hanging in there, so I guess time will tell.
I was eyeballing those 8970M upgrade kits since it seems they come with the most bang for the buck and you can use parts from their kit I assume while morphing the cooler.
If only the stock cooler had the Heat pipes attached | <-- This way instead of -- <-- That way so all you would have to do is detach and reattach. Boom, done. But that would be too easy right?
I also have seen a good bit on the PSU upgrade. With a Stock 720 and leaving the GPU clocks stock, does it still blow past the 150W stocker? And I see a lot of talk about using a Alienware 230W but what about the 180W or 230W Asus ones for the G750's? Does ASUS really change the end tip of the chargers within their own line? -
the asus g75 180w psu is fine for the upgrade & its compact. i have also herd the lenovo 230w works. yes the upgrade kit for the 8970m or 7970m is perfest for the job as it has all the scrus's and it has the little posts needed to get the back part of the heat sink to fit flush on the card.
-
So is the only modifying needed being the Heatsink itself? No need to mess with anything else in the Chassis unless you want to get fancy with the dremel?
-
the heatsink is the only part you have to modd
-
Temptation is increasing..... But even so, for $500 I could sell my laptop and be 75% of the way to a G750 with a 880M GTX and all the other bells and whistles. And those are pretty darn nice with the metal build...
Hmmm...
(The math being my laptop sold for $1000-1200, + $500 potential for said 8970M...) -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I think you are overestimating what your machine would fetch.
-
I have an uncle......
Who "NEEDS" a laptop with a BR player...
And has been putting off buying a laptop for the better part of 40 years.
If he want's one, it will be mine, and he will pay for it.
On the flip side, I see people asking $600 for semi broken, (dead pixels, bad this or that), 6G, Best Buy model J73's, why would a fully loaded A1 not fetch $1K? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well only to the uniformed, you can buy smaller and faster machines for that money now. Seems a bit harsh on the uncle.
-
True, but my laptop has been kept in Like New condition and with a SSD+1TB HDD I figure it wouldn't be far off asking $1K and seeing what I end with IF I was going to sell it.
The Uncle has had money (from B-day/Christmas) from over 3 years ago for a new laptop, and has yet to get one. Reason being, "There will be a new one 3 months from now" or something stupid along those lines.
This is an Uncle without a smartphone, using a 500Mhz XP powered IBM I gave him some 4 years ago, (without internet except when he visits because he hasn't paid for any at his place) and literally refuses to step foot past the mid 90's both in Tech and fashion lol.
My laptop fits all the bills of what he thinks he needs. Will he use even 5% of it, probably not, but it will last him till the end of time at his rate so I figure if he is going to hound me for support and learning, he is going to pay for it up front and pry the few dollars he refuses to spend on a laptop we partially paid for years ago...
I case you miss it, he is realllllly cheap.
Also I believe I bought my G73 from Power Notebooks back in 2010. Any chance you could PM me a ballpark for cash price on a 880M powered G750 with all the bells and whistles?
And is it possible to get a 8970M upgrade kit through you guys as well? -
i read the comlete thread, but still i have some points open.
can someone please tell me if this is the recommended card for ordering before im buying one?
Clevo AMD Radeon HD 7970M 2GB for P150EM P170EM P370EM Upgrademonkey in Stock | eBay
plus, can some one which have the Vbios for this card with enduro disabled can upload it/ email it to me?
and last thing, is the HDMI audio working with this card or not, i couldn't find a solid answer. -

It's on the forum already. -
do know you if the hdmi sound output gonna work with the clevo card or its matter of luck? -
..HDMI...... i tryed it a fuw weeks ago. i found i could get video Perfect... but no sound. you might be able to get sound if you run a lead from the headphone out to the tv or somthing like that....
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
HDMI sound will likely break, you would be able to use a headphone jack though yes.
-
My laptop still running strong! Using on my 49inch tv xD 1920x1080 resolution love it
Had some bsod and lock ups. Narrowed it down to the battery. Since removing the battery system been working perfectly.
Don't know if this helps but thought I re post the pics.
This is the finish product
This was my trial run on the heatsinks
and both pictures below show my jerry rigged set up since i have no soldering skills
Lastly, I used machine screws to mount the original heatsink
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It could be the brick struggling with charging the battery and powering the machine.

Hello guys
I bought Clevo 7970m for g73jh rbbx05.Modded heatsink and stuff. But I got bsod after installed drivers (tried 14.4 13.11.12.11b4). I flashed the card what cleiton gave in thread (thanks to him and anyone help).I tried these first with 213 biosv5 then i flashed bios to 209 and still doesnt work properly.I would be so happy if someone can help me.
Thanks
Edit : i follow this thread for months. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If installing the drivers causes a BSOD then the card may be defective.
-
when i go with safe mode(while amd driver is installed) then it looks 7970M at display adapters section. And after i deleted driver then it looks as vga
.Is it possible to understand card works or not somehow ?
I even tried dell vbios at ms-dos screen and it says error. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You would have to force flash a different brand of vbios but you should know what you are doing before playing around with that.
-
I tried many clevo vbios but they were 128 kb and now i have downloaded 64 kb clevo vbios. But didnt flash it because not sure.
-
sorry for double post but i read something and is it true i cant flash vbios if that vbios name longer than 8 digits or something ?
Because i said it got an error when i tried to flash dell vbios because i renamed it as "Dell7970m.rom" is that really why it gave me an error ?
if its that why then that means i can flash the clevo 7970m with dell vbios(modded maybe undervolted version from svl)
But im not sure because can cause brick -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The bios has the brand in its code regardless of what you name it.
-
what model 7970m is it ? is it 1.1 or 1.2 ? the 1.1 have issues from what i have read... -
Possibly, I did notice that the battery will not hold a charge fore more then a few minutes. Battery is new, few months old. From the very get go I had issues. When it would hold a charge, running only on battery, screen would get wiggly but the system still worked fine.
I'm thinking the added drain on the battery due to the 7970 made the battery go bad quickly or its possible it was defective from the beginning.
I may sell the laptop, lost my job and looking to see how much I could possibly get for it. Any ideas? Realistic numbers... 300 to 500 bucks?
