Hey tnf where are you getting these vbios from I wouldn't mind the one with hdmi audio. Also glad to here the dell card works I ve heard so many times that it doesnt even though I tried one and it did "only after I spent a small fortune on the clevo card" from what ive read you'll never get the fans to work properly with a dell card though seeing as dell and clevo have totally different ways of controlling the fan speed
-
Understand that but the m17x is getting nearly double the frame rate as the g73 same gpu its all good ill give it a fresh win install and make sure ive got good drivers all round and give it another test

Ok its definitely the vbios. The dell one im using atm is very slow and temperatures of 40°c so I knew something was going on.. tried a few other dell vbios's and no joy.. finally I downloaded a clevo one from that blind flash guid mentioned before and im getting 80fps instead of 28fps but only lasts a few secs before I get the grey screen of death..... can some one please either send a link or email me a clevo vbios I can try. I tried the one posted on this thread but no joy. Thanks
-
The clevo one im trying to get to work, might be the one everyone seems to be using ive downloaded it 3 times now from different places, seems like it might be undervolted. Ill grab a vbios editor and chuck it up a few see how it goes maybe. Msi afterburner wont bloody let me change voltage for some reason even though ive enabled it :/
-
Starting to think I might have a real new 7970m, even though it was second hand, and they're a bit of a I read somewhere something about structured more like a 8970m

I ended up saying stuff the clevo vbios, found a heap of vbios's in the end ill post the links when I get home. Might have expected to much out of the poor old g73 trying to match its frame rate with a alienware m17xr4. Its all back together now. Ended up with a dell overvolted and overclocked vbios , very stable, still only getting 50°c in the card for some reason :/ " the 7970m kinda feels like it only runs on one core" . Also successfully over clocked the 920xm to fricken 3.92GHZ. Plays metro last light and assasins creed black flag full hd, medium textures and graphics so not too bad

ok so there are 3 clevo bios's on this page some overvolted some undervolted
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...-7970m-modded-vbios-clevo-p1xxhm-laptops.html
and a heap of dell bios's and a few clevo ones. some of the overvolted overclocked ones are cool and had no problem with any ow except the clevo ones as my card is stubborn
https://sites.google.com/site/rsgeiger/home -
also i chucked a dell 7970m into the g73 worked exactly the same as the clevo one ive got except the fan is just ON
so it aint the card thats giving me the lower frame rate as the m17x -

Have you tried running any benchmarks like 3dmark?

Yer I have ive got the old 3dmark vantage one but the more I overclock it the less my score but the faster games work even when I stress test in game. Guessing the cpu temp gets high and it throttes down as the cpu hits 90°C in a bench mark but only 80 in any game so fully stable in normal circumstances. But still got some kinks to work out might chuck the clocks down a little. The 2013 3dmark seems to work alot better fps wise than the old vantage but it'll do all the tests fine but craps its self loading the score page... like I said few more kinks to iron out. Might try the clevo vbios again but with the 7970m drivers from the clevo website. During all this the gpu is still 50°C max so its not working tonits full capability and its still what seems to be whats causing me hassles. My scores which aint impressive at all ha ha on the old vantage are 10000ish not overclocked and 8000 overclocked. What annoys me it the m17x gets 22000 same test and it has a lesser cpu and same gpu
-
Had another pic of it a bit higher but cant find it
-
Ill try 3d mark 2013 again since ive just done a fresh install and see what I get
-
Ok for some reason my gpu core clock is only 450mhz max and my gpu memory clock only 300mhz. Doesnt matter what I do to it its the same
-
Dell cards or Clevo v1.1 won't work properly as they are essentially 8970M design and as there is no vbios out there designed for the HM chipset. I found one vbios that is development stage that might work (and is like literally the only one i forgot to check) if you want me to send it to you. Either way read my threads and you will see. -

Thanks heaps mate ill give it a go. Dont know what version of the card I have. Its all back together now and stuffed in the cupboard ill give this vbios a go see how it goes otherwise it might stay there for a while . Man alienware is so much easier than this hey ha ha

Hi all, a little late to the party!
I had an issue with my G73JH locking up for the last few years and finally resolved it this weekend (ribbon damaged to the num lock / caps lock / OC / light / screen mode button) removed it and running stably!
I'd like to do the 7970M upgrade and am happy to buy a card for it, I've read this entire thread as it was happening and skimmed it tonight.
Is my understanding correct that the Clevo card with the non-enduro BIOS works properly, with fan control, but no HDMI and the dell card with the dell vBIOS (which isn't suitable to flash to clevo due to card incompatibilities) works with the HDMI but the fan stays at 100%.
I would really like to keep the HDMI and the fan being full speed doesn't bother me so I would be happy if thats the case but I was reading through the other post on here saying the dell card wouldn't go over 450MHz and actually died! I'm sure MUCH earlier in this thread though at least 1 guy with an Alienware to borrow the card from was able to get it to work properly.
Can anyone clarify?
Also finally, has anyone considered or tried a M290X in their G73JH? I'm guessing more vBIOS issues but if it is capable of displaying video that would be awesome! -
not sure if anyone still pays attention to this thread but i'm interested in finding a clevo 7979 rev 1.2 for my g73jh (have done other upgrades to it already)
if anybody here already has one of these and has long moved on to new setup/laptop/gpu but would like sell theirs let me know. thanks. -

actually my old psu is dying so i just ordered a 330w dell on ebay and will modify that when i get it.. i believe you can also just use a tip changer although i have not heard anyone mention this yet so far but i'm going to try to see if a tip converter works instead of soldering the cut wires to brick. if not i will do that anyways.. this is the tip converter i ordered to use with dell to asus convert
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271667646170 -
and if you solder the wires do let me know which is the negative and which is the positive point in the adapter
thanks ! GOOD LUCK
-

If you do have to work with the cable, the safest thing to do is desolder the connection to the PCB in the brick and solder on the new one (once the brick has discharged fully).
-
thanks and will update on if the connector works or not.. it's shipping from china so at least 2 weeks or what not... found another one shipping locally from usa so might go that route if i can't wait too long... i'm still in search of a Clevo 7970m rev 1.2 though... i'll keep hunting haha

isnt there more files i need to get that clevo 7970m working
-
i need the flash file i have the asus g73 vbios moded. i need the rest of the files to flash it. and any others to file to please i beg you pleasei beging
-
just following up on my earlier report the little adapter changer i bought for about 3 bucks works perfectly with the converting tips from higher watt AC brick to work in g73jh so for those who don't wanna solder and cut the wire themselves this is a clean and cheap way to do it.

Yes, if you can soldering will be the cleanest and tidiest solution but adapters can work for every one else if you can find the right one.

That's what I would recommend, pass it on. You do have to be careful with all MXM cards.
