Asus fans even at 100% are not an issue though my M11x R3 is noisier than my JH was at full pelt it is certainly its strong point. Be very interested to see 3DMark results and temps however people with them in Clevo's are confirming very high temps compared to Alienware so would be great to see what the JH can produce.

+1 man for the hard work.

I all !
I'm back with some news (I think some will say very goos news ^^)
I bought a new 7970m from laptopmonkey... it's a clevo one, and as you should already know, It didn't work in the g73jh at all because of the vbios supporting enduro tech...
As I already told you I have a m18x with 7970m crossfire. So, I've to search a sager vbios on the net fot the 7970m, wich sager ingeneer has remove the enduro support from it...
I've been able to flash the clevo card, put in secondary gpu in the alienware, and I flashed it (command line with atiflash was : "atiflash.exe -p 1 -fs -fp sager.rom"...
Then I've checked if there was any probleme in the m18x system... I've checked the bios : ATI GFX x2 was recognized... windows, crossfire link was still enabled... and frequencies 2D / 3D where as they should be...
Then, I began to work on the g73jh system
I put some mx4 thermal paste, and phobya xt thermal pad... as always...
I've rearranged one more time thermal pads for my modded heatsink, and put the power on...
And so, everything worked fine !!! I've checked if the fan was running fine (beacause it didn't start in the beginning, and it worked !!!)
I didn't had to reinstall windows after all !!!
I've taken some screens for you
First you should know that I havn't been able to monitor temperatures...
I've download the last hwinfo 4.01-1690 version, but I could only read gpu mem frequency... Furmark as been able to show me the temperature...
I've hit after 5 minutes, 83°C, less my old 6970m...
1 hwinfo (some info like t°C, gpu frequency are missing
2 catalyst 12.7 beta installed
3 3dmark vantage (to check the card is working in 3d mode) !
Score : 19171 points !!! with an asus g73jh !!!!
link :
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) CPU X 920 @ 2.00GHz,ASUSTeK Computer Inc. G73Jh score: P19171 3DMarks
4 3dmark11 : score : P5408 !!!
link :
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) CPU X 920 @ 2.00GHz,ASUSTeK Computer Inc. G73Jh score: P5408 3DMarks
5 And finally, here is furmark graph
And before I forgot, HDMI works, but no audio through it...
but P5408!!!!!!!
This sager card (or clevo vbios modded) has absolutely no fan issues...
After playing with the benchmarks, I've only hitted top speed in the end of all benchmark session (furmark tells me it arrives at 80°C)
So, I can say by now, and in bold :
IT WORKS ! IT WORKS ! IT WORKS ! IT WORKS ! IT WORKS ! IT WORKS ! IT WORKS ! -
Excellent news! Too bad I just pui a 6990m in mine... Anyway, congratulations! I see you have a 920xm in there. Your g73 is going to be so beast now. Good job thanks for all your hard work!
EDIT: one thing I see that I don't like is that gpu-z is saying the card has a 128Bit memory bus... maybe the mobo is cutting it down or maybe it is just a false report. you are getting the score in benches so I wouldn't worry too much. -
yep
Thanks, and btw we have pretty same configuration... I have the same power brick, and same cpu
At least, ours g73 run smoother than the latest g75!
-
Yea. Too bad my 240W PS is having issues. both of us are well above the current g75. It's amazing!
-
Excellent news. I've got hand it to you, lots of dedication and hardwork you've put into this over the past few months even while you have a powerful Alienware M18x waiting for you. I wish I could give you more reputation, but unfortunately the forums wont allow me and wants me to spread it around.
By-the-way, in regards to those who want to upgrade to this particular card, would they be able to flash the modded Sager Video BIOS using their own G73JH? If so, could you kindly attach or post a direct link to this modded sager VBIOS without enduro?
All in all, I'm pretty impressed with the results. I was going to cheap out and buy a HD 6990M, but might not purchase a new rifle and put the extra cash towards a HD 7970M. -
This is good news.
The HDMI sound issue is no suprise. Most of have/had the same issue with the 6000 series GPU. Also some Dells have the same problem with eurocom cards. Should be a bios problem.
How is the fan control? does it work spot on or could it be a bit better ?
Also how is the GPU heatsink to touch? hot or realy hot at idle? You should test it for a week or to by giving it moderet load with games or benches and then we should have a real keeper
And again good workwish i could buy the card here too
Ordering from the US is like asking for someone to mug yourself....crazy taxes and customs fees.
-
wow good job man that news just awesome
i guess its time to spend some $$$ on this beast
cuz it will be able to last for more than 2 extra years with the 920xm and 7970m
thanks again man. -
Man thats great work .
-
But considering you have just destroyed Asus new G75 and G55 release by implementing a GPU that runs at twice the performance I would go into hiding if I were you especially if it is that simple. -
Now this are great news
Was it difficult to modify the cooler for it?
-
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Awesome news!
Now the Asus G73 can join the ranks of great 1st gen i7 laptops alongside the MSI GX660R, Sager W860/70/80CU and Alienware M15x and M17x R2
The fact that the new G75 is such a push over makes this an even bigger win -
Damn you sosa106 now i got a GF that wants the 7970m in her G73
+rep. Will have to get a clevo GPU. The Dell GPU-s are hell to mode (fan speed) -
a GF is always expensive to satisfy !!!
But you better go check on sager reseller... I've heard on this forum they sells 7970m cards....
And with your magic alienware heatsink, there will be no problems for the upgrade... -
JehutyZeroshift Notebook Evangelist
+rep =) P5408 in DX11 for G73JH is seriously insane! Congrats on your successful attempt!
-
People, don't trash so much the G75... we are working to fit in a 680m that would make it a real beast.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/660789-asus-g75-680m-upgrade.html -
however that upgrade will end up with a 600$ fail , so dont waste your time , go trash your g75 and get a g73 .
-
dont trash your G75 he he just have fun and dont put much hope for the upgrade cuz we was in the same position before some brave members took the risk and attempt just wait and see what would happens. -
I think the prices for G73JH notebooks will increase now again -
well just hope those upgrades price will go down a bit cuz cpu + vga + psu will cost 1k $ and that is the price of a new laptop .
but its still fun to do.
i started to save for this and almost close to 500$ still a month or 2 then i will grab one for sure. -
but the best solution was the heatsink DH48 has made with an alienware sample... more efficiency, clean... but not easy to unweld pipes from the heatsink... you must have a gun heater... -
Maybe just a 180w psu will be enough for the upgrade... I don't remember hoq much I was with the 6970m, but I think I was pretty higher...
The cpu isn't as important as the gpu for playing...
maybe you could upgrade in multiple steps
first psu, then gpu, and finally cpu
-
hmm, it may be the help the DSDT whom did you find the setting

I'm considering almost a year about the GPU upgrade since the first chaps tried 6970M cards in their notebooks until the upgrade became known and controlled process. When the 7900 generation appeared it became more attractive to me than 69xx cards due to the computing power raise of 79xx as well as due to large number of failed 69xx units (presumably caused by the low quality of the 69xxM production process).
I was thinking theoretically what MXM AMD card generation or individual card would be the last strongest one that could be fitted into G73JH similar way as 920xm or 940xm are the strongest CPUs ever, that could be placed into G73JH motherboard (we know no other CPUs newer than the Gen1 core i7 could fit). The Clevo 6970/6990 cards are almost ok with just HDMI sound missing (trade-off between HDMI sound and fan control). The Clevo 7970M card works only when the Sager vbios w/o Enduro support is used. Because all the gen2 and newer core i7 mobile CPUs have built-in GPU cards we may anticipate all the newer oem GPU cards will have Enduro support and it would be difficult to get the vbioses w/o Enduro support unless someone will be able to prepare the custom vbioses.
Concluding the above we may expect the ultimate GPU upgrade for G73JH might be the Clevo 7970M card. By this statement I'd like to motivate myself and perhaps some others who are waiting for the decision about which GPU to choose for upgrade 7970M and not to wait for 8xxx cards or maybe even 7990M (if it won't be possible to get the Enduro-less vbios). -
I've been looking a little into this topic talking about the g75 upgrade... and it seems to be an very good project...
Hope you won't have the issues there was on g73jw with the nvidia 460m upgrade (bios reachable, but won't post), and hope asus let some "doors open" to upgrade with another nvidia mxm card... -
And, I haven't do it yet, I'd like to thank Wallzi and svl7 for sharing their knowledge and the sager vbios for my clevo card...
THANKS A LOT !!

Long Live the G73!
Great job you modders! -
@sosa106
hi,
can sometimes show in IDLE fan and numbers of revolutions under load, or overall picture with min max RPM, as seen in the FPS BF3? -
How much does a "compatible" 7970M costs?
-
Hey guys, Doing a research paper on GPU advancements for written comm...Due tonight at Midnight, and came across this bit of very open information that no one is talking about "http://www.amd.com/us/products/notebook/graphics/7000m/7900m/Pages/radeon-7900m-series.aspx#2" States this is a 256bit interface, and a pci express 3.0, just curious as to what kind of bottle necks we will see from our chipsets. It would be an interesting comparison between your alienware and g73 with the 7950 on just the graphics scores.
-
its not bottle necked at all !
asus g73jh passes m18x r1 with hd 7970m , by 30pts .
so no bottle necks. -
-
I have new results , once the 7970m has been OCed
975/1400 @0.98v in 3dmark11
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) CPU X 920 @ 2.00GHz,ASUSTeK Computer Inc. G73Jh score: P6048 3DMarks
P6048
and
1000/1400 @0.98v in vantage
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) CPU X 920 @ 2.00GHz,ASUSTeK Computer Inc. G73Jh score: P21130 3DMarks
P21130
max temp hitted in both runs (with a notebook cooler) : 81°C
As you've seen, It's only 0.98v
Apparently, sager put this value (clevo workload is 1.05v)
That's why, I think, I get correct temperatures...
BTW, I'm pretty satisfied with my 7970m. I think it's pretty good sample... almost a Ghz @0.98v !
-
man that score is amazing.
you could try increasing the voltage to 1.05 and increasing the clocks abit because it still 81oC . look at my benchmark with HD 5870m @ 1.15v 925 core / 1100 mem , temp = 85oC. -
Damn the G73Jh is amazing, sad my G74SW has that soldered GPU.
-
Will you make some tutorial how flash new card, which card is needed (dell/clevo/sager ?) and how to use G73JH original heatsink ?
I'm not perfect in english language so i need step by step tutorial
How much you paid for everything ?
I need to buy for my G73JH new cpu (i5-430M on i7-920XM) new screen (1600x900 its sh*t) new PSU (120W on ... 200? which you recommend?) and last - GPU ...
I have more questions about upgrading G73
I love you <3 -
guess the card cost around 600 - 650$ and cpu will cost 230-260$ for a QS i7 920 extreme and 300 - 360$ for the 940xm als QS
and the you will need at least 180w psu targus with the right output plug can do the job and a 240w modded dell AW psu is the best choice if $$$ is not a problem
for the heatsink the orginal heatsink can be used with minimum mods and some ram sinks it did handle the AMD 6990m and this one is a better designed card and less heat the 6XXX series
so i guess the mod can go around 900$ - 1k $ as maximum. -
In Poland GPU is worth 1900PLN~560$ ,CPU around 300$ (1020PLN) + 250PLN~73$ for PSU 240W + screen around 500-700PLN (something better than my 1600x900)
Aww - its not worth to upgrade :/ 3670PLN~1080$ ...
If i want sell my G73JH i can get 2500PLN and if i add 3670PLN to it - i can get Clevo or AW with 7970M ...
Thanks for answer -
Going to have to wait for a DIY... I already have the 920XM. I'd want to change my screen to a matte 1080 instead of my stock glossy.
Well done sir, well done.
*EDIT*
Still no DIY?!?!?! Come on!! I have money to spend!! LOL J/K -
sosa106 your like a god to me lol
please can you post the bios on this site or pm me with the bios as i have been in contact with sager and they will do me a clevo card with the bios you have used if you would be so good to previde me with it
they said they would do it and post to me in the uk for 350 squid $520 that also includes the heatsink lol ill just have to remove the heatpipes of it and weld the g73jh one on to it. with my mod that i have managed to put four heat pipes on
ps my hd5870 overclocked at 900mhz core 1250mhz mem only hits 60c lol -
also people dont go and buy a sager card strate away !!! as the only cards that support this type of bios eg the bios that has the enduro tech support removed is the Clevo hd 7970m models P170HM and P150HM just got this infomation from sager thats what they said eneyway
sosa106 can you please put the model of the clevo card you have aswell lol sorry for all the questions lol -
can you upload your heatsink mod ?
it will be very useful to others. -
sorry evgasr2 not at the moment as its all together at the mo but if sosa106 posts the bios he is using
i will be more than happy to post pics for people and ill even do a guide for eveyone but gutting of the ridges on the heatsink is a to get flat
View attachment 80693
these are the bits i sanded flat lol used a rasp for the most of it
View attachment 80694
if you havent alread quessed it the red and black are where i put extra heat pipes i used 4mm heatpipes and flattend them out with a peice of wood ever side and hit them with a hammer
as you know the heat pipes are placed in the top of the heat exchanger so i cut a small channel in the heat exchanger on the oppisate side eg (the bottem ) lol to the original ones and used liquid metal to bond them on and one thing i can say about the liquid metal is that stuff is strong !! when i get a hd 7970m next month ill be posting pics to make life easy for others
sorry about my artwork it was never a strong point lol -

So far I found only upgrademonkey (UK) on ebay is selling them and based on the listing text I have the impression their cards are Clevo ones. On all pictures upgrademonkey cards are blue while the other cards on ebay listings (upgradeyourlaptop) where is primarily mentioned Dell these cards seem to have dark green / black color (I'm unable to identify the color better from those pictures).
Regarding your pictures of your planned heatpipe modification - this sounds to be a great idea to double the heat transmitting ability of the heatpipe system. Do you know from where to obtain some individual heatpipes with proper length and perhaps the heat exchanger / radiator with passing dimensions to build completely custom cooling solution for this great 7970M swap into G73JH? -
Hello to all ... I'm new at this forum, but I follow you for a long time .... my name is Pascal and I'm Italian ....
We do all the compliments for the excellent work done so far .... like you I am also a holder of the G73-JH, and look forward to the opportunity to upgrade to the new HD 7970m ....
the only thing I do not understand is the version of bios with enduro-less ... I do not understand what it's like this version ... Then, how do I flash the bios once mounted the new 7970m? I do not have an alienware m18x in crossfire .... -
you will be able to blind flash in g73jh .
pm sosa so you could get the file from him. -
