Yep that was what I was thinking. This mod is just too expensive when you can just get a new laptop for just a little more than that, and it would be much superior notebook too.

this mod isnt that expensive you dont even need the cpu as the i7 720qm wouldnt even bottle neck the hd 7970m !! so why dose that have to come ito the price ? if i can get a hd 7970m for the prie they are saying i can have one for then it will only be costing me $500 eg 315 squid so not expensive at all lmao ps i got he g73jh for 359 lmao so alot cheaper than you guys lol i got mine with a so called nakerd motherboard but just a rubishly flashed bios

    Hey!
do you have the card with you ?
if yes , make a bootable drive , and put atiflash and bios file , and make a autoexec file and put this inside the file atiflash -p -f 0 bios.rom , and then save it , and rename the file to autoexec.bat .
now put this file into your flash drive now, connect the drive and wait for sometime , make sure your cd/dvd rom is empty and harddisk is removed .
    thanks

The bootable usb drive should be FAT with some older sys files. If you don't have it google for hp drive key utility where is the HPUSBFW_2.2.3.exe utility that is a nice tool for formatting and download archive contains also Win98 dos boot system folder from which HPUSBFW_2.2.3.exe copies the necessary files to the newly formatted drive.

Only utilization issue, but that's only when Enduro is enabled (Clevo P150EM/P170EM), you won't find that issue on a G73JH with HD7970M.

you need an clevo card or eurocom , but dell too works but dont know if the vbios is flashable in it.
you just need the eundro disabled vbios , and just make a blind flash drive and flash the vbios.
    hope this helps.

ok thanks ... DELL card creates problems in our G73? ... I recently bought an i7-940xm, and a power suply of the DELL of 240 watt, to change course for the G73 ..
I have an HP with a i5-560m. I can use it to flash VBIOS with enduro disabled while in Windows? .... It can be a test!

Create problems means the fan control will be out .
and dell 240 watt will more more than enough to overclock i7 940xm and HD 7970m .
flashing vbios is windows is possible but the chances for bricking is very high . DOS is the best method.

But the 7970m with the modded Vbios has any1 tryed one of them?
or there is a Broadcom Mini PCI Express video card . what i was thinking is could you put a Broadcom Mini PCI Express Video Card & a 7970m would that help in any way to make it work??
once agane i dont know what im talking about and am just puting an idear out there for some1 who knows about these things to tell me otherwise.

Yoshey791. The broardcom mini pcie video card will not work as the hd7970m endro support uses the CPUs built in gpu die as the primary display gpu all of the first mobile i7 CPUs ie 720qm 820qm 920xm and so on do not have the built in gpu and require a dedicated gpu and in most laptops will not let you boot from a mini PCIe port due to so many issues Ull have to blind flash the hd7970m A's the laptop will think it hasn't got a dedicated gpu because on boot up the hd7970ms bios tells the CPUs built in gpu to do all of the work and the same in windows the only way round this issue is to blind flash or to find out if the hd7970m uses the VGA port on the laptop as a digitally singed one if not. Plug a monitor in to it. In theory the hd7970 should kick in and display on both ports making it an easy bios flash I will be testing this when I get mine lol. But a very nice bloke on this site made me an autoexe to do the blind flash for me that's the root I will be going just hope the card flashes and don't mess me about like my GTX 580 sli in my pc did

Ok, you guys got me interested too. I've got a stock G73Jh with 720QM. I'd like to stick in 7970M, and I'm not planning to do any OC. So far I've understood the safest bet is to buy Clevo GPU, and flash it with sager VBIOS that has enduro switched off. And also to get a more robust ~200+ watt PSU.

What I didn't quite catch yet... do I have to do some modifications to the cooling?

    Hi,
for everyone interested in upgrading with the 7970m, DH48 did a very complete hard cooler mod in his topic talking about the 6970m upgrade...
upgrading the g73jh with the 7970m is basically the same as resumed in his thread...

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...um/641007-g73jh-6970m-upgrade-infomation.html

Remember, if you are a strong modder, you can mod it anyway you want, and it's a funny part.
then you'll need to blind flash with the sager vbios...

Hello Sosa106 .... I want to upgrade my JH with the new 7970m Clevo ...
I recently upgraded my i7-940XM JH with a new power supply and a Dell 240 Watt modified ....
Is difficult for me in the blind flesh VBIOS ... I've never done ...
I own an HP laptop with I5-560M CPU can take that to flash VBIOS Sager with enduro disabled while the computer is running on Win 7 without problems?
Or blind flash VBIOS as performing the procedure?
For the heatsink of the video card I would use the thermal pad copper ... can function as a solution?
    Thanks Sosa...

I don't know if you could be able to perform the flmash operation with your hp laptop... this would, in the best, be the same thing it would be with your g73... I thinkthat, when you are on the igpu, bios will disable the discrete gpu...

Well, the thing is I can't garantee blind flash operation will work on the g73 as I used my m18x to do it... and I don't remember if the system was on his way to windows or not... sorry about that...
but blind flash worked on others system (p150HM's jaybee83)

for the thermal copper over vrms, the g73jh is built on a way there is an air flow created by the gpu fan that cools hdd and gpu heatsink... with your case mod, I don't know if this flow is still alive ! But with a notebook cooler (without the cover part at first) you should be able to run some temperature tests, and then trying without...
Vrms are very hot, put the max thermal copper pads you have :D !!!!

Also, blind flash your laptop is not a very difficult operation
    you need
1 Make your laptop booting in usb primary option (bios)
2 Create a bootable device (with hp usb tool)
3 copy the new vbios and the latest atiflash on it
4 create a batch file with it in it : "atiflash.exe -p -fs -fp -reboot sager.rom" and rename the file as you want (ie : flash.bat)
5 test your usb boot device with a reboot of your computer, this would help you to have an idea for how much you have to wait to be be able typing command line for the flash operation
6 put your 7970m card in your laptop (after all necessary mod for the heatsink fiting the card properly, check DH48 first post in the 6970m upgrade thread)
7 turn power on listen to post sound (that must not be disbled in bios)... this would mean system post
8 you just have to wait the necessary amount of time you've checked in the "6" operation
9 just type your batch file (ie : flash.bat) you've created earlier
10 the system should reboot by himself in the end of the flashing process, and after that, enjoy ;)

Thank you so much for all the work and explaining you've done for the user's here :) I'm saving up right now for the gpu. It'll be a few months before I can safely afford it, :) but I'll definitely put my results up here.

I am thinking of doing this upgrade, sounds really nice to boost such a 2 year old laptop with a high end GPU!

How are your temperatures with the 7970m installed?
Some people already complain about overheating with the stock GPU.
From what I can tell the stock 5870m has a TDP of 50W, the 7970m has a TDP of 100W... how does the cooler handle that?

And what did you use as thermal interface, the old thermal pad, a new thermal pad or thermal paste?

yeah the 920xm + 7970m + 180w or more psu will give the JH more time and will jump in the performance to be par with the big boys like the m17 and others with much less cost
i currently purchased a 920xm and targus 180w psu and almost done with saving for the clevo 7970m i bought the cpu as an es for 230$ and psu from a friend for about 30$ used as new.
i will post here when all parts arrives so i open the hood one time for cpu + gpu upgrade.

A total cost for the entire upgrade would be helpful.

    CPU
    GPU
    Thermal Pads
    AC Adapter
and anything else the mod requires.

    Thanks

I've read over this thread quite a few times, and I'm sure I've completely missed it every time, but I'll ask anyways. If I plan to just upgrade to a 7970 and keep my 740QM would I still NEED to upgrade to a new PSU, or would that just be optional?

Yes you would. The HD5870m uses about 50w where as the HD7970m uses 100w. I believe an 180w AC adapter will work just fine.

Well Seeing as I'm sure I'll be getting the CPU upgrade at some point in time. I'll probably just do a modded psu for the 200 or 250 (don't remember which it is). But I really want to keep this thread alive to see if anyone else is doing this.

180W will work fine however if you have a 920XM and you want to OC it I suggest going for 210~230 at least. You can look up Asus 230W adapter, dc tip looks similar but I'm not sure if it'll work on the G73JH. If you ever go for the 180W and worry about the condition of the brick, turning v-sync on is a good idea.

Hello Sosa106 .... I'm sorry if I answer late but I was on vacation ....
thanks for showing me all the steps needed ....
I did not understand how I create the batch file ....
I wanted to ask, if I install a Dell card, can I have the ability to flash bios or change the bios for the fan problem? ...
G73JH no problemaso that the paper starts on the Dell ....
and then you can post the file of the paper Clevo VBIOS with enduro disabled?
in regard to the flashing of the Clevo VBIOS, I have a CPU i5-560m with integrated GPU .... Can I install this CPU in my G73JH VBIOS to flash the Clevo card in Windows 7 using ati flash?

Has anyone tested a 7870M by the way? It should be at least 50%+ faster than the 5870M but is using only 55W so it should work even with the original 150W PSU. I'm wondering though why I'm barely seeing any notebooks with it?

the reason you dont see many laptops with this gpu in is because the cards normally spec ed at 100w tdp with the factory voltage being as high as it is makes loads of extra heat a friend managed to get a 38% overclock with stock voltage (hd7970m) !! companys do not wana use it as much as the gtx 680m as the gtx makes less heat not the normal senario we are used to seeing heat issue is a big killer of laptops as you all well know but with a little bit of know how and a bit a modding and the problems gone lol

also there ant as many people in the world that want a beast of a laptop compaired to just the cheap one eg 300 - 500

i have brought mine today cost me 385 pound but hay its worth it lol carnt wait to come back of holiday more intrested in getting the card in me laptop than i am in going away lmao

So this is why G73JH owners won't get a G75VW. That, and the 6970m upgrade as well. This is great because Asus will never use flagship cards, they always use midrange so that the noise emissions are low and because they think the video card will be too hot. Speaking of noise emissions, how quiet is it with a 7970m? If it's less than 41 dB, something's wrong.

That 7970m with enduro turned off seems to be the one to pick. Also, there's a guy called "evgasr2" thet successfully upgraded his g73jh with the 7970m. Check the comments on this video: Asus G73Jh with Dell HD 6970M - YouTube

    dude!
dont spend 595$ on a HD 7970m , it sells for 400 - 475$ here , so open a WTB thread on market place so you would find some good deals . its waste paying more than 500$ .
    il email it .

Hello Guys .... and returned to relive this forum ....
I found another Ebeyer, which sells 7970m Enduro disabled with a good price ...

I asked if the card bootable on HM Clevo had installed in a VBIOS with ENDURO disabled .... the dealer told me that the VBIOS flashing for the HM series has ENDURO disabled ... so this card is great for us, just just ask when buying flash the VBIOS with enduro sdisabilitato ....
    for you as a judge?

Also, the 7970m BIOS without enduro would come in handy!
    my email: [email protected][/QUOTE]

I am thinking of getting this one off Ebay.

AMD Radeon HD 7970M 2GB FOR CLEVO | eBay

$425 + postage, asked about Enduro and is switched off by default on this card, though they can provide with switched on, so looks good for the G73JH. Am planning to collect some heat pads and copper vram sinks before I buy though, so I have all the necessary bits to get it to fit and cool ok.

Nice, let us know how it works when you try it. Im curious to see if it's plug n play with that card cause enduro is turned off by default or if you have to use the provided vbios.
