    HI mans.

Sorry, but the information on this topic are scattered in different pages, and it's not clear.

In the end, the Asus G73 is perfectly compatible with the ATI 7970??
Is there any thing to do or just put it and is easily recognized?
    everything is working properly?
change the fan speed based on temperature or running at 100%?
Some problems of temperature? that temperature reaches lla card at maximum load?
you can take advantage of the performance of 7970 to 100% or is restricted in some way from the motherboard of the laptop?
    There are problems trottling?
Must Modificar andthe heatsink in any way?

would be useful to write clear guidance on this issue, with the various tests done and how to do upgradi of 7970.

    thanks to those who respond.

    From what i've gathered:

    • G73 is compatible with the 7970m, how much? yet to be determined as some people have only tried different variants (manufacturers) and not all the information has been shared
    • Is it plug and play? yet to be determined with the stock enduro turned off. With the cards using enduro vbios flash is needed to turn it off
    • everything working? for the most part yes, but granted enduro is shut off in the vbios you wont get the integrated graphics switching.
    • Temps? sosa hit 83c after 5 min on furmark, that's well within range but still consider heatsink modification
    • performance, seems to be working just fine with little to no loss not sure if there's a hit because of pci-express bus speed 7970m is pci express 3.0 bus while 5870m is not.
    • throttling issues? not enough information collected, but i doubt it.
    • heatsink modification? yes, it is recommended to do so. guides all over this forum.

Did you make a bootable fat32 usb place all the necessary files on it (batch file, ati flash, rom) also its blind flashing so are you waiting long enough and made sure that its booting off the usb? also, which card did you go with? clevo?

im sure your already on the latest drivers, and a lot of people already on the 7970m i dont want to say its driver specific. but i guess it wouldn't hurt to reinstall latest video drivers. the only other thing that comes to mind is to try flashing the vbios again (now, that you can actually see some video) with all the correct ati flash commands. then try running dx 10 or 11 again and see what comes up.

The 7970M is equal to SLI 580 Ms but they're no where near SLI GTX 580s. ;) Know the difference big guy. The 7970M is about equal to one GTX 570, which is a good bit slower than the 580.

i wouldn't personally seeing as 7970m has like a 100 watt tdp, i7-740qm max 45 watt tdp, then you have to account for everything else... but it's never really a good idea to run your psu on full load better to go around 80% load (on a good psu)

180w targus one suggested earlier in this thread seems a good one if your not overclocking. i would like to try the modded alienware 240w supply (delta preferred).

Yes I am using a heatsink for the vrm and the small FETS on the bottom of the card as they get hot real hot 1 question I need answered people dose the 940xm CPU work in the g73jh with the 213 bios. As the hd7970m is slightly bottelnecked in some games only in crysis the first 1 you can tell because you get brakes in the display when u turn fast and massive frame rate drop. As the GPU is panning the he'll out of the i7 720qm honestly didn't think it would bottleneck the CPU also me. 3dmark 11 score is down abit from sosa106 benchmark

Ps it dose work on the 150w PSU but I'm thinking is it that that making me have the issue in crysis as that game loads all PCs heaverly please post thoughts people. And just for the record the hd 7970m dose preform aswell as 1.3x a GTX 580 on devil may cry 4 got a nice solid 230fps on the first part of the bench mark GTX 580 sli stays around 380fps on it

you'll want to upgrade the power adapter for sure, i7 940xm does work but i would just go with the i7 920xm cause its cheaper

Not sure about G73JH, but 9 40XM does work in the G73 JW, probably works on the G73JH too. I'm currently using it on my G73JW.

I have a 920XM in my g73jh. Based on what I read before i purchased mine i read you can use the 940xm if you so desire.

I'm really interested and will keep an eye on this thread. I love this laptop and might just do this upgrade.

    Edit*

I did a quick search and it seems like this is the Alienware PSU people are discussing: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...295-upgrade-g73-jh-6970-a-79.html#post8097791

I'll still wait to see what rob says for list of materials.

I do not recommend the Asus - Taurus PSU as it suffers under load I have done some tests on my 180w Taurus I had hiding in the garage it dropped drastically underload and makes strange noises lol don't think much to them I have just orders a 240w PSU from alienware and I will be modding it to work lol will post pics of this 2 to make life easier 4 people I have also plunged the g73jh in to a massive power supply on my workshop bench and found that the max load pull was 201watts. So I will need a 240w for it lol ps that was with the battery charging to so u can take 15w off for that

great job robtherob... a clean upgrade ;) and a really good mod of your heatsink
and about the psu, i confirm the best way is finding an alienware 240w one. It's cheap on ebay, and only need 2.5/5.5mm plug cord to succeed this psu working in the g73jh... plus, if one day you want to upgrade your cpu, you'll have sufficient power to do it...
Also, my 7970m is still running fine, no new issues by now !
I've seen you had to downclock by 1mhz your card... from what I've read in this forum, this is apparently an enduro issue... so I don't understand... maybe if you try to flash with the file I used...
I wanted also to ask you the pcie speed seen in gpuz... mine is 1.1@8x.... while the stock 5870m and my 6970m were running 1.1@16x... and I coulnd't have it better... But it's not very important as every games I tried are running very smoothly on highest settings...

yea im curious on the pci-e bus speed aswell, technically it should be running at 1.1 @ 16x speed. but between bus speeds you only get low gain 1.0 vs 2.0 vs 3.0.

but i've heard gpu-z reporting incorrect values sometimes, is it also reported as 1.1 @ 8x speed on hwinfo?

I've tried with gpuz and pcie speed test 0.1 program... and both says 1.1@8x... I just come to check in hwinfo, and still 8x (2.5Gb/s) only
and this could related to many things (bios, vbios, motherboard...)

Hi again people mine is reporting speeds of pcie 2 @16x lol but got that stupid issue with having to downclock 1mhz I'm going to see if its the same with overclocking lol it's the same bios I got off you but I was thinking of trying to flash it again from winflash but that says I already have a better version installed lol ps just done a PSU mod from a 240w alienware 1 also do you get eney issues with watching utube as I get a black screen but I can make it hibinate and then get it logged back in and then it's fine ? But I'm thinking this is a registry issue eney info will be great people

pcie 2@16x !! I thought hm55 was limited to 1.1@16x or 2@8x (which is basically same transfer rate)... it's kinda surprises me...

I've been playing with modded bios to try optimizing pcie parameters, but it didn't change anything at all... So maybe you have a better mainboard revision than mine...

yea that vbios you sent me said invalid file specified. It won't let me edit or even check the parameters. I've heard they're couple mainboard revisions for this laptop, the easiest way to tell is by the color of the pcb yellow vs green (some say green is the latest dunno). Which mainboard version do you have?

robtherob - can we get a picture of your gpu-z and just want to make sure, you both are on the same vbios?

I've seen too the green one should be the latest rev for the mainboard. Mine is green but it doesn't mean a lot. Maybe my pcie port is faulty. to check this, I should change again one more time my graphic card, and, for now, i don't want to ^^ !!! (I've already put all screws on my laptop, which weren't the cast last few months !!!). Everything's running wonderfull so, it's not a real bother to me that pcie port is only running 1.1@8x....

about same vbios, i'm not sure we have the same... if robtherob could post his vbios, we could make a file compare to check on this... and maybe this could be the answer why he had to downclock his card... as I said earlier, guys that had to downclock by 1mhz were having enduro issues... as I remind...
I also know that if you have enduro on, the g73 wouldn't post... so that's why a file compare will be usefull

im not sure if the 1mhz downclock has to do with enduro, as enduro is only meant for integrated graphic switching. If the vbios has enduro turned off all that results is running everything off the dedicated gpu (not a big deal since 5870m was always running when machine is at stock). One notion i had thought about was heat or voltages; however, we can rule out heat since he reported excellent temps for the gpu (robtherob). I wanted to get my hands on the vbios to check what voltages were in the parameters; however, my vbios editor isn't reading it. Plus, I dont have 7970m in machine to do proper testing. It'll be a long while before I'm able to put one my computer as money is tight.

Im getting this issue aswell lol also my hd 7970m performs poorly on skyrim and crisis 1 lol. Unless I overclock the hell out of the CPU ( I7 720QM) I overclock the CPU to 2ghz per core with setfsb and throttle stop and I seen a 20% increase in skyrim on the minimal fame rate the max is 60. For the people who are buying the hd 7970m to update ur g73. U WILL NEED TO GET A i7 920XM OR A i7 940XM as the card has slow downs waiting for the CPU to catch up lol. I am running the 1600 x 900 screen tho don't know if the 1080p screen will take some of the slowdown of the card at the higher res as the CPU will not always be playing catch up

Hi everyone, I few days ago my 5870M in my G73jh (2y 6m old) stopped working, laptop powers up (fan noise and keyboard lights showing) but screen remains black and also external monitors vga or hdmi have no signal.

I was looking for the clevo 6970m, because seamed to have less problems but I cant find one, there are a lot of dell and eurocom on ebay.

I read on other threads that eurocom perform fine did anybody try them?

Could you suggest the best GPU I could mount and where could I buy it?

    Thanks in advance
